Cycling: World Track Championships (BBC 1/HD | 2:45pm to 4:30pm | Saturday 3rd March 2018)

Jill Douglas presents highlights from the UCI World Track Championships in the Netherlands, with Sir Chris Hoy providing expert analysis. These championships see British stars Jason and Laura Kenny return to elite competition. Four-time Olympic champion Laura is back in action just six months after giving birth to the couple’s first child, while Jason – a six-time Olympic gold medallist – has reversed a private decision to retire after the Rio Games in 2016. Commentary is by Simon Brotherton and Chris Boardman.

Call the Midwife (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Sunday 4th March 2018)

Drama about a group of midwives in 1960s London. Dr Turner gets involved with a troubled young man, and Lucille makes new friends. Meanwhile, Barbara lies ill in hospital.

The Flying Scotsman (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 5th March 2018)

Documentary presented by Rob Bell, charting the story of the world’s most famous steam locomotive. With steam on its way out, it fell to enthusiast Alan Pegler to save the mighty Scotsman, but his ambitions saw her stranded stateside. Three owners later, it was revamped by the National Railway Museum in the 00s.

Rocky Mountain Railroad (Quest | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 5th March 2018)

Canadian Pacific freight crews tackle one of their most challenging loads. The team attempt to haul a 210-tonne reactor on an epic cross country journey.

Secrets of the National Trust with Alan Titchmarsh (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 6th March 2018)

Documentary series. Alan Titchmarsh reveals the history, human stories and the hidden treasures of Britain’s historical estates. Alan visits Stowe in Buckinghamshire, the most magnificent landscape garden of late 18th-century Britain and the site of a well-known public school. Pete Waterman discovers the link between Stowe and the Beatles, Dan Jones abseils down Lord Cobham’s Pillar at Stowe and Suzannah Lipscomb visits a Norfolk stone masonry to help re-create some of Stowe’s iconic statues.

Shetland (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 6th March 2018)

Crime drama set on the remote Scottish islands. Ignoring Secret Service warnings, Perez and Tosh track down Mathias Soderland. Back on Shetland, a beach memorial service is held for Sally McColl.

Wild Britain with Ray Mears (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 6th March 2018)

Wildlife series revealing the hidden lives of both the familiar and more unusual animals with which we share our island home. Only the hardiest of beasts survive in Britain’s mountains and uplands, including the golden eagle and its prey the mountain hare, plus 400,000 red deer, the flamboyant black grouse, and sheep who have grazed for centuries.

Still Game (BBC 1/HD | 9:30pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 8th March 2018)

Comedy series in which lifelong friends cope with everything modern life has to throw at them. In this first episode of a new series, Winston appeals to his friends for help, as asbestos is forcing him out of his flat for a while but, with nobody keen to take him in, he has to find an alternative arrangement. Meanwhile, Isa’s birthday is coming up and she is on a mission to find out who is throwing her a surprise party.

The Yorkshire Steam Railway: All Aboard (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 9th March 2018)

Documentary series going behind the scenes of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on its 50th anniversary. Marketing Manager Laura targets teachers in the hope they’ll return with their classes, Chris reveals how some of the bridges are in desperate need of repair, and Piglet has a race against time to fix an engine which Laura wants to be on display when the Tour de Yorkshire whizzes by.

The series kicks off with Matt LeBlanc, Chris Harris and Rory Reid taking a motorsports road trip across America’s Wild West, in the latest V8 sports cars from McLaren, Jaguar and Ford. Rob Brydon tackles the Top Gear track in the Reasonably Fast Car.

Are Scotland’s Trains Fit for the 21st Century (BBC 1 Scotland/HD & BBC iPlayer only | Monday 26th February 2018)

Documentary in which Ian Hamilton journeys along some of Scotland’s urban and rural rail services to find out if they are on the right track to meet growing customer demand. Along the way he hears from commuters on a range of issues that affect their travel experience on a daily basis, including ease of access, overcrowding and punctuality. He also examines the track record of initiatives such as the opening of the rail link between the Borders and Edinburgh and hears how infrastructure improvements are in the pipeline for parts of the north east network. In Newcastle, he checks on the progress of the manufacture of new rolling stock and catches up with transport minister Humza Yousaf.

Revival of the classic sci-fi drama. Exploring the idea of the Mandela Effect, in which large groups of people remember an alternate history, Mulder and Scully learn how the X-Files themselves may have originated.

Shetland (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 28th February 2018)

Crime drama set on the remote Scottish islands. With Andreas Hagan their strongest lead on Sally’s killer, Tosh arrives in Norway, leaving Perez following up the leads on the Kilmuir case. Tosh accesses the CCTV from the airport and sees footage of Sally leaving the terminal, discovering she had met with a man who has far-right associations.

Documentary series going behind the scenes of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on its 50th anniversary. To celebrate, the railway has hired headlining steam engine Royal Scot, but she has a problem with her boiler, carriages that haven’t been serviced in five years, and no-one even knows if she will fit the line.

Scotland’s Superhospital (BBC 1 Scotland/HD & BBC iPlayer only | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 24th April 2017)

Series following the staff and patients at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. In this edition, a 12-strong trauma team assemble as man who was in a head-on collision with a lorry near Loch Fyne is helicoptered to the rooftop helipad. In the children’s hospital, 18-year-old Connor, who has leukaemia, faces an agonising decision over his treatment and his studies. The programme meets one of the 200 porters who are the worker bees of the hospital, walking miles on every shift, and the baby who can now have his cleft lip and palate repaired under anaesthetic by the top plastic surgeons in the country.

Inside the Tube: Going Underground (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 24th April 2017)

The Piccadilly Line is famed for its glamorous stops, which include Knightsbridge and the West End, but Rob Bell discovers how it also played an important part in saving the tube from bankruptcy, and changing public transport as we know it.

Me and My Dog (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 26th April 2017)

Chris Packham hosts a physical and mental competition in the Lake District, where eight owners and their dogs compete together in a series of challenges. It is the final stage of the contest and the Reds have one last challenge to determine which pairs go through to the final. It all comes down to a fiendishly difficult canine intelligence test which involves Lake Windermere and some dog toys. One pair prove just how far they have come and Toni is finally convinced that Flapjack is actually quite clever. Then it is the final – a human-dog triathlon involving a two-kilometre bike race over rugged terrain, a 100-metre open-water swim and a one-and-a-half-kilometre cross-country run. It is a race to the finish and the Me and My Dog Champions are unveiled. It is a chance for everyone to reflect on what they have learned and it is a celebration of a very special species many of us choose to share our lives with.

Mind Over Marathon (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 27th April 2017)

Two-part documentary in which a group of ten unlikely runners living with different mental health issues are brought together by Nick Knowles to train for the ultimate test – the 2017 London Marathon. This episode sees the remaining nine runners juggling physical injuries along with their mental health challenges and trying to fit training into their lives. They attempt longer and longer distances and even travel to the Brecon Beacons for a mountain run. The episode catches up with Rhian, Shereece, Jake and Poppy, who struggles with anxiety and the symptoms of PTSD. The runners are joined at a training day by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. The royal trio have launched Heads Together, a campaign to remove the stigma around mental health issues and are keen to meet the runners and learn more about their experiences.

Barging Brits in the Sun (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pn to 9:00pm | Friday 28th April 2017)

An affectionate look at how Britain’s canals are becoming great again, with more and more people choosing to escape the rat race and climb aboard a canal boat for a slower pace of life, from a former Bond girl with a £100,000 boat to the UK’s top Elvis tribute act and a family taking their first ever boating holiday.

London’s Metropolitan Line was the world’s first underground railway, and is still used by 70 million passengers each year. Rob Bell discovers how the capital’s overcrowding problem was the necessity that prompted this hitherto unthinkable transport innovation.

Chris Packham hosts a physical and mental competition in the Lake District, where eight owners and their dogs compete together in a series of challenges, all in a bid to make it to the grand final. This episode’s challenges are all designed to test the owners’ ability to immerse themselves in their dog’s world.

Mind Over Marathon (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 20th April 2017)

Two-part film in which a group of ten unlikely runners living with different mental health issues are brought together by Nick Knowles to train for the ultimate test – the 2017 London Marathon. The group come from all over the country to meet for the first time at a training camp. Among the runners is Rhian, a mum-of-three who lost her one-year-old son to pneumonia and five days later lost her husband as well. She struggles with PTSD and anxiety and can’t run on her own when she starts this process. Shereece had postpartum after the birth of her first child and struggles with depression and panic attacks, and persuading her family that mental health problems are a real illness. Brighton barman Jake has struggled with depression, but wants to try running as a way to help cope with his illness. The episode follows them up to the point of getting ready for the challenge of running their first 10k race – an important milestone if they are to make the marathon starting line.

Dial “B” for Britain: The Story of the Landline (BBC 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 20th April 2017)

Timeshift journeys back to the age of the landline – a distant era when phones weren’t pocket-sized wireless devices, but bulky objects wired into our homes and workplaces. Over the course of 100 years, a communications network was rolled out to join up Britain, bringing commercial and social change in its wake. Yet despite ongoing technical innovation, the phone service often struggled to meet demand. From the speaking clock to the Trimphone, the first public call boxes to the Post Office Tower, this is the story of how Britain got connected, told by the operators and engineers themselves, and featuring rarely seen archive footage.

Tony Robinson explores the 200-mile coast-to-coast walking trail made famous by Alfred Wainwright. En route to Robin Hood’s Bay, his final destination on the North Yorkshire coast, Tony meets people who are determined to keep the local industries alive, including a steam railway. He also visits RAF Fylingdales, a family-run bakery and the area’s last shipyard in Whitby, and enjoys a day of whale-watching.

Autumn is on hold as summer continues, with unexpectedly balmy conditions throwing a life line to the roe deer as they prepare for the winter ahead. For other animals, mating season has arrived, making for a dangerous and testosterone-fuelled time at Ravenscar Beach.

Chris Packham hosts a physical and mental competition in the Lake District, where eight owners and their dogs compete together in a series of challenges, all in a bid to make it to the grand final. Only one pair can win but experts are on hand to help them all unlock the full potential of their partnerships. Chris unveils the science behind the incredible bond between human and dog. Challenges in this episode are designed to test communication skills between human and canine. The eight pairs are split into two groups, the reds and the yellows. The reds must encourage dogs through a series of gates using three key modes of communication. For the yellows, it’s an uphill scramble through fast-flowing water. The ultimate test of communication is a tethered biking challenge. Some realise they’ve got a lot to learn, but for others it’s a joy to be racing side by side with their canine companions.

Hands-on history travelogue about the 200-mile coast-to-coast walking trail made famous by Alfred Wainwright. Tony reaches the Yorkshire Dales, where he visits Wensleydale cheese manufacturers, a calf auction, Asgarth Falls, joins in the rehearsals of a traditional brass band, samples an award-winning honey, meets a retired major who has turned a disused army training ground into a wildlife haven and takes a tour around the Jacobean stately home of Kiplin Hall.

Rivers with Jeremy Paxman (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Sunday 26th March 2017)

Devoted fisherman Jeremy Paxman travels along four of the great rivers of Britain, meeting the people who make them what they are, unearthing their history and traditions, and exploring their wildlife. Jeremy travels from the Thames’s elusive source in Gloucestershire to its bleak but epic end in the Kent and Essex marshes. In spite of its fame, there’s a lot to the Thames that people don’t know. It’s always been a working river, where people from Domesday millers to Victorian cockneys and modern engineers have made their living. So Jeremy meets the people who manage the floods, maintain the bridges, control the locks and deal with the sewage, with the odd stop along the way for entertainment.

Inside King’s Cross: The Railway (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 27th March 2017)

Christmas holiday plans are knocked off course when a person is hit by a train near Doncaster, Christmas Eve heralds the start of an ambitious programme of engineering works and train guard Matt shares some stories about his family’s long association with the railways.

Britain’s Busiest Motorway (itv/HD | 7:30pm to 8:00pm | Tuesday 28th March 2017)

Documentary series which goes behind the scenes and on the roads with the characters who work on one of the most famous and busiest motorways in Britain – the M25. After dark, the M25 takes on a very different atmosphere. As the speed of traffic goes up the visibility goes down, making the motorway a more dangerous place. As traffic officers Andy and Keith clock on for the late shift, reports come in of a cupboard on the carriageway. Last year, there were more than 2,000 call outs regarding items in the road, which can pose an obvious risk to drivers. Back in the control room, Emily spots some unusual visitors at Junction 23 – loose horses on the motorway, which are causing chaos. Loose horses are often a problem on the network and Emily is concerned for the safety of one of her night-time maintenance teams. Meanwhile, at junction 10, a bridge joint is being replaced and the engineers are in a race against time to get the job done before the sun rises.

Yorkshire: A Year in the Wild (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 28th March 2017)

High up in Malham Cove, two 40-day-old peregrines must learn how to fly, while south of the North York Moors National Park, a pair of grebes carry their youngsters around on their backs. Facing unseasonably cold weather, times are tough for the roe deer of Malham Tarn.

Tony Robinson: Coast to Coast (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 31st March 2017)

Hands-on history travelogue. In the Eden Valley, Tony makes a dramatic ascent to limestone paved Asby Scar, the last evidence of a 300 million-year-old tropical sea. He also finds out why border collies make perfect sheepdogs, before reflecting upon the huge drystone cairns at Nine Standards Rigg.

Devoted fisherman Jeremy Paxman travels along four of the great rivers of Britain, meeting the people who make the rivers what they are, unearthing their history and traditions and exploring their wildlife. Jeremy travels along the Mersey, from the wuthering heights of the Peak District to the sands of the estuary at Liverpool. He investigates the river’s part in creating modern industry, and finds that today it has recovered from historic pollution to become a haven for wildlife of all sorts. He goes electrofishing for brown trout in the river, scales the heights of the tallest bridge on the Mersey, and tracks down the mysterious ‘Mersey mermaids’ in their watery home.

Documentary series. Michael responds to a report of a suspicious bag, Mel’s quick thinking reunites a split-up family in Leeds, and driver Lee gets his hands on one of Virgin’s new Azuma trains that will come into service in 2018.

Documentary series. Spring comes to the Dales and North York Moors National Parks, the season when the parks’ animals must find food, a mate and raise a family. Adders battle to secure a mate, while grebes prefer a mating dance. On the coast, a quarter of a million sea birds arrive to nest, many returning to exactly the same nest site every year. And up around Malham Tarn, an injured, pregnant roe deer desperately seeks Spring’s green shoots to survive.

Adventurer Ben Fogle takes Storm, his black Labrador, for a walk along the banks of the River Thames, starting out from Marlow. Broadcaster Emma Kennedy and her maltipoo puppy visit the Lake District, including Grasmere and Loughrigg. And presenter Helen Skelton and her dog Barney are on a voyage of discovery in Dumfries and Galloway – Scotland’s so-called ‘Secret Coast’, with its mudflats and deserted beaches.

Meet the Lords (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 13th March 2017)

Series following the larger-than-life characters that populate the House of Lords, one of Britain’s oldest, most idiosyncratic and most important institutions. Brexit hits the Lords with a bang when they vote on leaving Europe and become the centre of the nation’s attention. They also have their biggest ceremonial day of the year when the Queen pays her annual visit. The House’s Victorian sewage system is on its last legs and not equipped to deal with so many Lords. To fix the many structural problems an inquiry is considering a dramatic move for the five or so years the work will take. Some Lords have radical overhaul plans of their own and want the size of the House cut. And Baroness D’Souza is worrying about peers who claim their expenses without contributing and has some new research.

Documentary series exploring King’s Cross station. The London Fire Brigade are called when a passenger falls between the platform and a departing train, Aria the hawk is put to work frightening away scavenging pigeons and a tube strike hits the capital resulting in lots of passengers arriving late for their trains.

Comedian Bill Bailey returns to his West Country roots for a walk on Exmoor with his dog Louie. Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark swaps the intrigue of Westminster for the tranquillity of the Isle of Arran and a deserted sandy beach. And Julian Clary and his Jack Russell visit the beautiful South Downs, Britain’s newest national park. They also visit an old queen’s house in Lewes.

Tony Robinson’s Coast to Coast (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 17th March 2017)

Hands-on history travelogue. Actor Tony Robinson traverses northern England from the west coast to the east. Tony begins by asking why the village of St Bees has such a big church. Matt LeBlanc, Chris Harris and Rory Reid return for the 24th series of Top Gear. This week features the astonishing, ultra-exclusive Ferrari FXXK, tested to the max by Chris Harris at the Daytona circuit in Florida. Matt, Chris and Rory then race across Kazakhstan in three high-mileage cars: a Mercedes saloon, a Volvo estate and a London taxi, all of which have done at least 480,000 miles, the equivalent distance of going to the moon and back. Actor James McAvoy guest stars in the studio and on the famous Top Gear test track.

Devoted fisherman Jeremy Paxman travels along four of the great rivers of Britain, meeting the people who make them what they are, unearthing the rivers’ history and traditions and exploring their wildlife. He meets the last mud-horse fisherman on the Severn Sea, investigates the country’s largest ship graveyard, stops off for a glass or two of organic Worcestershire wine and, after demonstrating quite extraordinary levels of ineptitude at a coracle regatta, is greeted by a poet at the Severn’s source in the watershed of Wales.

Celebrities go for a stroll through the great British outdoors with their faithful hound. Along the way they explore the history, wildlife and culture of the area. To the start the series, actor Robert Lindsay walks his two labradors on the Cornish coast. As a child Robert spent many happy days on Porthcurno beach. Now he’s back, walking a stretch of the South West Coast Path with its stunning views. Phil Spencer visits the historic Kent marshes and a brewery with his cocker spaniels. And actress Angela Griffin returns to her Yorkshire roots with her cavapoo, where she tries her hand as a shepherd.
