With exclusive access to the Tate’s ‘secret stores’, where some of the new work will come from, members of its congregation explain how they feel the £260m transformation of this cathedral to contemporary art is money well spent, while others think its expansion in a time of recession is sacrilegious. Andrew Marr and Brenda Emmanus present from the opening night celebrations with contributions from Tate supremo Sir Nicholas Serota, artists Tracey Emin and Antony Gormley, critics Waldemar Januszczak and Jennifer Higgie, and comedians and painters Harry Hill and Vic Reeves.

This time Penelope is in Northern Ireland, visiting the Queen’s official Royal residence, Hillsborough Castle. Penelope meets the household staff responsible for raising the flag, buffing the brass and turning down the beds for Her Majesty’s visits. She also gets an exclusive look at a long-lost scrapbook of handwritten royal menus and invitations dating back to 1925, which sheds light on the tastes of the day. Penelope also meets the Queen’s bugler, uncovers an unexpected treasure from the Queen’s 1953 coronation tour and finds out how The Queen’s simple act of crossing a road in Enniskillen in 2012 helped unify two fractured communities.

In celebration of The Queen’s 90th birthday, Penelope Keith travels to the four corners of the Union to venture behind the scenes of Her Majesty’s official royal residences. Penelope continues her journey at the Queen’s official Scottish residence, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where she discovers a unique 1000-piece royal silverware service and steps into the ill-fated bed chamber of Mary Queen of Scots. Penelope also boards Her Majesty’s floating royal residence, the Queen’s beloved yacht Britannia and peeks into the Queen’s private quarters. On the west coast of Scotland, Penelope visits Inveraray Castle and the Master of the Royal Household of Scotland. Penelope takes aim with some archers and meets the the Royal Falconer at Borthwick Castle in Midlothian.

Documentary series filmed over seven months looking at life behind the scenes at the UK’s biggest and busiest airport. In this edition, storm Imogen causes chaos on the runways and in the terminals. Airside safety officer Simon keeps his eyes peeled for any potentially dangerous debris which could damage planes that are landing. In Terminal 4, manager Sunita looks after dozens of passengers whose flight to Delhi has been cancelled. Trainee engineer Elliot prepares to get his hands dirty as he clears a blocked sewage pit – an essential part of the airport operation that no passenger normally sees. There are emotional reunions in arrivals and staff from the Animal Reception Centre welcome an exotic shipment of feathered friends from Canada.

Koko: The Gorilla Who Talks to People (BBC 1/HD | 8:30pm to 9:30pm | Wednesday 15th June 2016)

Documentary telling the extraordinary story of Koko, the only ‘talking’ gorilla in the world, and her lifelong relationship with Penny Patterson. Project Koko started as a PhD project to teach sign language to a baby gorilla, but as Koko began to communicate with Penny, an intense bond formed between them. Penny has now been with Koko for over 40 years and claims Koko can reveal fresh insights into the workings of an animal’s mind. Koko’s unique life with Penny has been filmed every step of the way. Many hours of footage chart the most dramatic moments – Penny’s battle to keep Koko from being taken back to the zoo in which she was born, Penny’s clash with academic critics who doubted her claims and the image of Koko mourning the death of her kitten. Penny believes that Koko has moved beyond simple language to express complex emotions – such as a longing for a baby gorilla of her own, and that the empathy she evokes in people changes their attitudes to all animals.

Ahead of the EU referendum, Laura Kuenssberg examines the economic costs and benefits of EU membership. In a powerful, multi-textured documentary filmed over almost two years, one family living with dementia reveals what life is really like behind closed doors. Using CCTV cameras, video diaries and a small, immersive film crew, the programme follows 55-year-old Chris Roberts from north Wales as he, his wife Jayne and his youngest daughter Kate come to terms with his Alzheimer’s diagnosis. From making the decision to choose his own care home to writing a living will, getting lost in his own house and not recognising his family, Chris chronicles his changing life as his independence slips away. Once a businessman and a keen biker, he now struggles to walk and talk – his life is beset by frustration, yet his remarkable insight allows us into his world.

Restricted to a maximum budget of £250, the trio buy three massive mileage SUVs – a Vauxhall Frontera, a Jeep Cherokee and a Mitsubishi Shogun – and then embark on a series of action-packed challenges that include battling with the Stig’s Leisure Activity Cousin and a race with terrifying consequences for the loser.

The Met: Policing London (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 29th June 2015)

Documentary following the officers of Britain’s biggest and busiest police service as they deal with life, death, crime and its victims, all across the capital. On an average night, the Met receives over 4,000 emergency calls. In the residential streets of north London, a burglar has been caught in the act. It’s down to PC Waz Din to literally talk him down when the suspect is found hanging from a first-floor window. On the busy streets of Soho, Detective Superintendent Kevin Southworth has been gathering evidence on the thieves and drug dealers exploiting the area. With the help of 400 riot-trained officers he makes his move. After dark, London’s clubs and bars come alive, but as the punters spill out onto the streets, it’s up to the cops to deal with the ones who can’t hold their booze. And the long night can be a lonely time for those suffering from mental health issues. Constables Ian Gray and Christine Wratten rush to help two Londoners who are feeling suicidal.

Dallas finds out how the Shard of London – the tallest skyscraper in Western Europe – stays standing on soft clay. He canoes along a secret river under the city of Bristol and discovers why Edinburgh was sited on an ancient volcano. Exploring the natural world, he abseils down an underground waterfall higher than Niagara. And beneath one of the nation’s oldest oak trees, he discovers a vast root system that’s wider and more intricate than its branches.

Also in this show, Clarkson is at the track in the latest Jaguar F-type R and a sensational, modernised E-type called the Eagle Low Drag GT, while Hammond is in Spain to test the brand new version of the legendary Mazda MX-5. Finally, Brit Pack acting star Nicholas Hoult tries his hand in the Reasonably Priced Car.

More Tales From Northumberland with Robson Green (itv/HD | 8:00pm to 8:30pm | Monday 9th March 2015)

Robson Green returns to his home county of Northumberland, uncovering more hidden gems of one of the most beautiful parts of England. In this episode, Robson is on the trail of some of Northumberland’s greatest historical treasures. In the Farne Islands he goes diving, discovering some mysterious cannons and the wreck of a ship sunk by the German Luftwaffe in 1941. He learns about the fascinating Roman relics that have been unearthed here over the years. The Corbridge Hoard was discovered by students in the 1960s, and the Vindolanda Tablets are the oldest handwritten commentaries in Britain. Finally, on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne he hears about the Viking invasion and the legacy of the Norsemen.

Eventually, the pair get their hands on two machines they believe are suitable for the job and set off on an epic adventure to find their colleague. Also in this show, Clarkson is on the track in the new 471-horsepower Lexus RC F coupe whilst star of The Fall and The X-Files Gillian Anderson tries her hand in the Reasonably Priced Car.

Robson Green returns to his home county of Northumberland, uncovering more of the hidden gems of one of the most beautiful parts of England. In this episode, Robson travels by canoe along the county’s longest river, the Coquet, to uncover its rare wildlife and hidden history. He visits the Warkworth Hermitage, an ancient chapel accessible only by boat. Stopping off at Warkworth Castle, he heads on to Amble to find out about the incredible surfing seal, which surprised two surfers last summer by taking a ride on their boards. Finally, Robson heads across the bay by kayak to Coquet Island, an RSPB nature reserve that is home to Britain’s rarest nesting seabird, the roseate tern.

Second of a three-part documentary series in which Professor Iain Stewart explores the importance of oil and how the world has become so reliant on it in little over the span of a human lifetime. In this programme, he looks back to the early 1950s, by which time oil, plastics and fertilisers had transformed the planet. However, once those countries producing oil demanded a greater share in profits from the Western energy companies, the oil and gas fields of the Middle East became a focus for coup d’états and military conflict. In the North Sea as well as in America’s Gulf coast, it became a race against time to find alternative supplies, with the offshore discoveries in the 1970 proving crucial to both Western Europe and the US.

Ian and Jayne Hall Edwards bought a large derelict Victorian school in the valleys of west Wales, with the hope of combining a family home and a new eco-building training business under one roof. Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May conduct a valuable piece of consumer research with their attempts to improve and enhance the ambulance. Starting with a belief that current ambulances, which are usually very big and based on a diesel van, are in need of a rethink, the presenters go their separate ways to focus on the one area they think could be improved. May focuses on passenger comfort, Hammond tries to improve response times by getting other drivers out of the way more effectively, while Clarkson confronts the same issue with the invention of what he calls ‘the sports ambulance’. Their three very different creations are then put to the test with a series of severe and often messy challenges, culminating in a fast reaction to a spectacular emergency. Also in this episode, F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo is the star in the Reasonably Priced Car.

Guy Martin makes a two-week, 1000-mile trip across India, heading to one of the world’s maddest bike races: Rider Mania, the largest gathering of Royal Enfield motorbikes on the planet. In the second episode, Guy visits the boom city of Mumbai, where more skyscrapers are being built than anywhere else in the world. Guy clambers 833 feet solo to the top of India’s tallest building, only to be disappointed by the state of the welding. Back on ground level, Guy visits a slum where a million people are packed into one square mile. What he discovers changes his preconceptions about what a slum is.
