The station gets back to the new normal, as Covid-19 restrictions ease on travel. Route Control keep a close eye on the weather forecast, which is predicting dangerously high winds. The comedian ventures to the islands of Mull and Staffa, nestled along the west coast of Scotland and home to some of the most breathtaking sights the country has to offer. Beginning her trip in Staffa, Susan visits the cathedral-like cavern of Fingal’s Cave, one of the UK’s true natural wonders formed over thousands of years. Her need for speed is fulfilled when she witnesses the Mull Rally, while in Tobermory, she visits a biscuit factory run on sustainable energy. Lastly, the presenter goes in search of the largest bird of prey in the UK – the white-tailed sea eagle.

Michael reflects on his fourth travel series, exploring the Sahara. This journey brought him into contact with nomads, refugees and artists who had sought out this vast desert, but also those displaced by war, the migrant crisis and the rise of militant Islam. The journey took Michael over the Atlas Mountains, to a Smara refugee camp, to the famed city of Timbuktu, and into the deep desert as part of a camel train.

A look at the campaign to bring the slave trade to an end after 400 years. Divers explore the sunken remains of a ship that had been carrying freed slaves who had been recaptured. Having traced his own ancestry back to the Benga people of Gabon, Samuel visits the country to learn more of their traditions and stories. Plus, a trip to Costa Rica in search of evidence of escapees from two Danish slave ships.

Paddington Station 24/7 (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 26th October 2020)

The return of the documentary going behind the scenes at the London station. It is the height of summer and staff and passengers on the Western network are feeling the heat, with Network Rail staff positioned at key points to monitor the track – which can reach temperatures up to 20C higher than the air temperature.

The comedian explores the area between Glasgow and Edinburgh, paying a visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens and setting to work as an assistant keeper at Edinburgh Zoo. She learns about Scotland’s forgotten ceramics industry during a visit to the seaside suburb of Portobello, gets a crash course in laying tables on the Royal Yacht Britannia, and gains special access to the country’s busiest railway station.\

Michael Palin recalls the making of his third travel series Full Circle, a journey around the Pacific Rim which took him to Russia, China, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand and North and South America. This series saw Michael adopting a more investigative role than in previous odysseys, particularly when encountering the drug wars and poverty that plagued Colombia. With contributions from David Attenborough and Joanna Lumley.

A look at those who resisted slavery, including the famous Underground Railroad and freedom boats that helped runaway slaves to escape to the safety of Canada, using a network of safe houses to make the perilous journey north. The programme also examines the influence of famous freedom fighter Harriet Tubman and the black soldiers who served in the Union Army during the Civil War.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 20th October 2020)

The Fraserburgh crew race to save a stricken fishing boat without a working rudder in a force-eight gale. On Loch Ness, a yacht becomes trapped on a weir, and one wrong move by the lifeboat crew could send it over the edge. On the north Devon coast, the Minehead crew comes to the aid of a puppy that has swallowed a fishing hook.

The comedian explores Aberdeenshire and Angus on Scotland’s north-east coast – a vast area of cliffs, beaches, rolling hills and fertile farmland. Susan begins with a visit to Glamis Castle, the childhood home of Her Majesty the Queen Mother, where she learns about the castle’s role in the Second World War, tells the time on Scotland’s largest sundial and is let loose with the pruning shears on a very special grape vine. Later, Susan is given a crash course in seal first aid and learns of the Aberdonian who inspired escapologist Harry Houdini.

Michael Palin looks back on the making of Pole to Pole, in which he travelled along a single line of longitude across the USSR, Africa and finally into Antarctica. Along the way, he paid a visit to Chernobyl and gained an insight into the last days of the Soviet Union. His travels across Africa led to an encounter with some fellow globetrotters from his home town of Sheffield – but he was forced to make a detour when his planned route passed through a war zone.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 13th October 2020)

In Essex, the crew at Walton and Frinton gets an unusual mayday call to a ship called HMS Pickle. Arriving on scene, they discover it is not the modern naval vessel they expected, but a replica of a ship that once served in Nelson’s fleet, and though the original survived the battle of Trafalgar, this one is shipping water and sinking fast. On the east coast of Scotland, the crew at Anstruther faces a tricky rescue trying to extract a walker with a badly broken leg from a remote coastal path. And in the Shannon basin in Ireland, the volunteers at one of the RNLI’s few inland stations at Lough Derg are woken in the early hours of the morning by their pagers – cries for help have been heard coming from the 40-mile-long lake. After launching into inky darkness and thick fog, the crew make an eerie discovery.

Laurence asks Kris to fight in a charity boxing match to raise cash for a homeless shelter. Can he make the leap from mild-mannered hotel manager to prizefighter? VIP guest Louise Brookes checks in, asking for the same room she stayed in 175 times while she attended the inquest into the Hillsborough disaster, and Ciara launches a new competition to promote weddings at the hotel.

The comedian explores Grampian and the Central Highlands, going behind the region’s most iconic sights to see what the tourists miss – and unearth the hidden gems in her home country. She begins her journey in Perthshire at Blair Castle, which has a unique claim to fame as the home of Europe’s only private army. From there, Susan travels to Invergordon, where she goes underground to explore an amazing feat of wartime engineering and the home of a world record-breaking echo. In the Cairngorms, the comedian meets a special and charming group of animals – Britain’s only wild reindeer herd.

Michael Palin revisits his travel series, beginning with Around the World in 80 Days. The first episode revisits his visits to Venice, Cairo, Saudi Arabia, India, Hong Kong and China – a nation that was closed to most westerners at the time. In the Irish resort of Skerries, the crew run to the station when strong winds sweep a teenager on a paddleboard towards the busy shipping lanes of the Irish Sea, while in the Bristol Channel, among the many yachts taking advantage of a fresh summer breeze, one loses a crew member overboard. While the crowds are heading home at the end of a busy summer’s day in Cleethorpes, two 13-year-old girls find themselves alone, cut off and at risk of drowning on a sandbank rapidly disappearing under a fast-rising tide.

James’ workload doubles when Siegfried takes ill during a harsh winter. Among his many patients is Dick Rudd’s prized cow, which has an abscess in its throat and is on the brink of choking to death. Dick is devastated, having risked everything on the animal, leaving James determined to save the animal by any means. Mrs Hall discovers it is James’ birthday, and Tristan tries his best to cheer him up by arranging a double date.

A busy Friday sees almost 700 party-mad people checking in. But with just minutes to go, there are problems with the plumbing. It’s even worse for Charley, who has arrived for a hen party organised by her brother, as there are problems with their room – and general manager Damian struggles to placate them. Meanwhile, owners Laurence and Katie throw an extravagant circus-themed party for the twins’ fourth birthday – and all the staff are invited.

Reports on adventure sports, proving that the pandemic hasn’t stopped Scotland’s most determined outdoor enthusiasts from creating their own entertainment. Ultra-runner Donnie Campbell creates a new record time for running all 282 Munros, 13-year-old, Isla Easto comes out of her comfort zone to cycle 400kms coast to coast, while top adventure racer Marie Meldrum shares her lockdown diary.

The comedian explores the Borders region, heading to a secret woodland in Galloway Forest, where she meets some cute and ardently protected red squirrels. She then enjoys a tour of Traquair House which, at 1,000 years old, has played host to historic figures such as Bonnie Prince Charlie. Susan is in her element as the 21st Lady of Traquair reveals secret stairwells and Mary Queen of Scots’ bed. To the south, in Eastriggs, Susan visits the site of the world’s largest munitions factory, where thousands of female workers produced explosives during the First World War.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 4th March 2020)

Documentary telling the story of the unpaid volunteers who sacrifice their free time to staff more than two hundred RNLI lifeboat stations across the UK. In the final episode, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution volunteers race to rescue two teenagers stuck in mud in Cleethorpes on the Humber estuary before the incoming tide overwhelms them. Elsewhere, a team in Devon help a crew of a yacht shipwrecked on a notorious sand bar, and a routine call to pick up a boat that has broken its moorings becomes a race to save a family of four.

The Yorkshire Steam Railway: All Aboard (Channel 5/HD | 7:30pm to 8:30pm | Friday 6th March 2020)

The annual steam gala is held and this year, in a bid to generate as much cash as possible, the railway decides to put on a show with a record 15 locos coming from all over the country for a weekend steam spectacular. The star-studded line-up includes the iconic Union of South Africa. This engine, a sister to the Mallard, the fastest steam loco ever built, is due to be retired, so this will be one of the last opportunities to see it. However, Piglet is optimistic for a home win with the 9F, the last remaining example of one of the most powerful class of engines ever built in Britain.

Britain by Barge (Channel 5/HD | 8:30pm to 9:45pm | Friday 6th March 2020)

On the second part of the Scottish leg, Bill Oddie, Jennie Bond, Anne Diamond and Pete Waterman join the Glasgow and Edinburgh Union Canal, rising lock, stock and barge up the Falkirk wheel before heading east. Anne and Jennie encounter the ghost of William Burke – of Burke and Hare fame – as they travel through the Falkirk tunnel, which he helped build as an Irish navvy. Pete goes digging for industrial treasure at an old railway terminus and Bill gets to look down on the birds for once as the barges take to the air on the longest aqueduct in Scotland.

At clinic, Nurse Crane meets and cares for heavily pregnant Bonnie, who is not married but committed to the baby’s father Eddie, while Kevin’s dependency on pain relief is discovered by the team and Dr Turner and Miss Higgins must find a way to help him.

During a trip, there is a celebration on board Westro as apprentice Stephen West turns 20 and officially receives his skipper’s licence, while fishing boat Sardonyx is on the hunt for squid in the Moray Firth. In Peterhead, part-timer Arthur James McKenzie is following in his grandfather’s footsteps fishing for lobsters just 50 metres from shore.

Documentary telling the story of the unpaid volunteers who sacrifice their free time to staff more than two hundred RNLI lifeboat stations across the UK. The volunteers race to the rescue of a shark attack victim, and two fishermen caught by the tide find themselves stranded in a rising sea. Elsewhere, two young boys are swept out to sea in a rip current.

Death in Paradise (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 27th February 2020)

A blind actress is the only witness to her husband’s murder, but it remains to be seen whether she can really be trusted. Drama, starring Ralf Little, Aude Legastelois and Frances Tomelty.

The Yorkshire Steam Railway: All Aboard (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 28th February 2020)

Paul Middleton, aka Piglet, and the team attempt to finish the restoration of a 9F locomotive that has taken more than 50 years, and also bring the monster King Edward IV engine to the branch line for its gala. It cost a small fortune to transport there, and Piglet doesn’t know if the huge engine will fit on the small branch line. Plus, the programme meets Beth, the railway’s first female loco driver, and follows Gill and Sammie on the Pullman dining train for their last afternoon tea service of the season.

Britain by Barge (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:20pm | Friday 28th February 2020)

Bill Oddie, Jennie Bond, Anne Diamond and Pete Waterman cross Scotland from the west coast to the east on its oldest canal, the Forth and Clyde. On their way, they learn about the role Clydesdale horses played on the waterway and find out how pleasure boats began to use the canal in the late-1800s, transporting people out of the city to the countryside on day trips.

Walking Britain’s Lost Railways (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Sunday 16th February 2020)

Rob Bell heads to the industrial heartlands of north-east England, beginning on Wearside, where he learns about the world’s first railway designed for steam locomotives. Rob also visits the ‘living’ museum at Beamish and rides a railway from George Stephenson’s day, following an old line into Hartlepool, where a medieval port was turned into a mega-centre of coal, rail and shipping in just one generation.

Davie Milne skippers trawler Faithlie to Norwegian waters to trial a new style of fishing net, and it doesn’t take long for first mate Jakey and the rest of the crew to get to grips with the new technology. In the waters off Orkney, Iain Harcus is aiming for high-value white fish on his boat Aalskere, while back in Peterhead a new scheme is under way to provide the vital skills needed to work in the fishing industry.

The owner of a hair salon is killed in front of her family, leaving DI Neville Parker and his team stumped when it turns out no one actually saw what happened. Ralf Little stars as the British detective, with Aude Legastelois-Bidé, Tobi Bakare and Shyko Amos.

The Yorkshire Steam Railway: All Aboard (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 21st February 2020)

The return of the behind-the-scenes look at the North York Moors Railway. Piglet’s been promoted, but seems to spend more time in his overalls than behind his desk as he grapples with an old American war-horse, the S160 Omaha. Elsewhere on the railway, lovable ticket inspector Bert Blower has a new trainee, and `king of the carriages” Kieran awaits a Flying Scotsman carriage returning to the railway after being vandalised two years earlier. Plus, there are antics from trainee driver Phil and budget-conscious big boss Chris.

Travelling along the Leeds and Liverpool canal, Bill Oddie, Jennie Bond, Anne Diamond and Pete Waterman eventually leave Yorkshire behind them and head into Lancashire. Pete and Anne discover a Polish war memorial and learn about the role canals played in the Second World War. Bill goes in search of an elusive kingfisher, while Jennie walks in Charlotte Brontë’s footsteps. Later, Anne samples a Fat Rascal, Pete tries to turn Bill into a steam engine nut and the entire quartet disappear into the dripping darkness of Foulridge Tunnel, where they find out about a famous cow who once swam it.

However, her due date isn’t so soon and keen to bring on the birth, Maureen takes a big risk by secretly taking castor oil – with potentially disastrous consequences.

Rob Bell explores more abandoned rail routes, beginning with one that cut an outrageous path through the dramatic hills and gorges of the Peak District – part of the 1860s express route between London and Manchester. From Matlock to the spa town splendour of Buxton, Rob unearths a tale of Victorian ambition, as he travels along a route filled with great engineering, which is now a beloved part of the Peak District National Park.

A desert island survival course goes wrong when the leader – a trained survival expert and ex-SAS soldier – is found dead in the forest of a remote island near Saint Marie. Having ventured off into the wilderness alone and with no other people on the island apart from the trip participants, suspicion soon falls upon them. But with all of the course members providing one another with an alibi, how could any of them have committed the murder? That’s what new detective inspector Neville intends to find out. Starring Ralf Little.

Bill Oddie, Jennie Bond, Anne Diamond and Pete Waterman travel along three of Britain’s most famous waterways. They begin on the Leeds and Liverpool canal, for a journey along the longest single canal in the UK. After getting to grips with their barges, they visit the model village at Saltaire and discover how a mill that was one the largest textile factory in the world has been reinvented as an art gallery and hi-tech production line.

Meanwhile, Violet is given two tickets to new hit film The Sound of Music and decides to raffle them off with all proceeds going to the incubator fund, while Timothy, Angela and May want to give their parents a night off, but they’re not sure how. Back on shore, the Robertsons are checking their boat Zenith into the dry dock for some vital maintenance work.

Part one of two. Thomas investigates the case of John Sealy, a soldier who died during a military training exercise involving exposure to CS gas. It appears the victim died from an aneurysm, but when Thomas discovers the trace of a possible nerve agent in his system, the man’s family are desperate for answers. Was a chemical weapon involved, or is there a more innocent explanation? First of a two-part episode of the crime drama, starring Emilia Fox, David Caves, Richard Lintern and Liz Carr.

Part two of two. Jack is rushed to hospital after collapsing at the scene of a car crash, which Thomas suspects could be the result of exposure to the same nerve agent that was used on John Sealy. With Jack’s life hanging in the balance, it falls to Nikki, Thomas and Clarissa to find the truth and save their friend.

The celebratory launch of a new luxury resort is cut short when a woman is found electrocuted in her hotel bathtub – with the door locked from the inside. It looks like a simple case of suicide, but with Jack Mooney no longer around to confirm Commissioner Selwyn’s suspicions, DI Neville Parker is temporarily flown over from Manchester to close the case. However, he soon realises that island life is not for him, so when evidence of suspicious activity turns up, he is dismayed to realise he will have to extend his stay and investigate the case as murder. Ralf Little joins the cast, with guest appearances by Steve Pemberton and Samantha Bond.

Secret Scotland (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 7th February 2020)

Comedian Susan Calman continues her journey in Ayrshire, where she visits the birthplace of Robert Burns and gets to see a precious artefact normally kept in a fireproof safe. Moving on to the Isle of Arran, she learns the tricks of foraging and puts her sense of smell to the test, before heading to Culzean Castle and learning the story behind Peter Pan in Dumfries. The tour concludes by travelling in a kayak to Pladda Lighthouse.
