UK TV programmes to watch this week : 04/06/2022

Platinum Party at the Palace (BBC 1/HD | 7:30pm to 10:30pm | Saturday 4th June 2022)

The third day of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations continue with a spectacular evening of entertainment. The Buckingham Palace concert features a glittering array of global stars and performers, including Queen + Adam Lambert, George Ezra, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Nile Rodgers, and Diana Ross, who celebrate 70 years of Her Majesty The Queen’s reign. As darkness falls, the Palace will be illuminated by stunning projections to accompany the show-stopping and emotional songs and performances. Kirsty Young is in St James’s Park in London with special guests, and Roman Kemp is backstage catching up with some of the performers taking part.

Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In (Channel 4/HD | 7:30pm to 9:45pm | Saturday 4th June 2022)

Documentary following the life and career of the legendary football manager, who won an unprecedented 38 trophies during his 26-year tenure in charge of Manchester United. From his working-class roots in Govan, Glasgow to his career as one of the most acclaimed managers of all time, the film takes a look at what makes Sir Alex tick. While recovering from a traumatic brain haemorrhage, Ferguson recounts details of his life and career to his son Jason. Aside from interviews with Alex, his wife Cathy and his three sons, there are contributions from former colleagues and players including Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs and Gordon Strachan.

The DIY SOS team are determined to help get the job done, accompanied by hundreds of local tradespeople – only to run into the worst storms to hit Britain in recent years.

Four people called Joey claim to own a newly renovated three-bedroom semi-detached house in the historic Welsh market town of Conwy and it falls to celebrity panellists Judi Love, Richard Madeley, Harry Hill and Harriet Kemsley to figure out which one is the honest homeowner and who are the impostors. Whoever persuades the panellists that they are the real homeowner walks away with a cash prize.

British Planes That Won the War with Rob Bell (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 10th June 2022) ** NEW SERIES **

The engineer explores how four iconic British-built aircraft became masters of the sky and pioneered a new era of flight, beginning with the Sopwith Camel. Two years into the First World War, the British fleet was being outgunned and outmanoeuvred by the newer German fighter planes, and the answer came from the Sopwith Aviation Company and a designer called Herbert Smith. This game-changing aircraft shot down more enemy aircraft during the conflict than any other Allied fighter, and became crucial in reclaiming the skies over the Western Front.

Part three of six. When a woman confesses to murdering her husband, the team must determine if all is as it seems. Meanwhile, Simone is shocked to be reunited with a detective from her childhood and struggles to untangle her past.

Nick Knowles and the team venture to Northumberland to finish a build they started just before the pandemic, helping a couple whose 18-year-old daughter has complex medical and mental health issues. Around the country communities come together to light more than 1,500 beacons to celebrate the Queen’s 70-year reign, with a principal beacon lit at Buckingham Palace. A look at the tractors designed for snow, and for steam and those designed to save lives. In Burnham-on-Sea, cameras focus on the RNLI’s Talus M8, which has been designed so it can head into the sea – even when the waves are lashing hard – and launch its lifeboats. Meanwhile, in Minnesota, viewers meet Kory, who has brought back to life a legend from the steam age, the Case 150.

Gay rights activists gather in London for a pride march in 1984, and decide they have a common cause with the miners’ strike. Coverage of the 66th staging of the annual song competition, hosted by Italian TV and radio presenter Alessandro Cattelan and singers Laura Pausini and Mika from PalaOlimpico in Turin, following Italy’s victory in last year’s event with Zitti e buoni by Måneskin. The United Kingdom is represented this year by singer and social media personality Sam Ryder, who will be performing Space Man, which he co-wrote with Grammy-winner Amy Wadge and Max Wolfgang during the pandemic. The current favourite to win are Ukraine’s entry Kalush Orchestra with their song Stefania, who have been granted special permission to leave the country to perform gigs in Tel Aviv and Amsterdam ahead of the main event. Graham Norton will once again commentate and bring his distinctive charm to the spectacular event.

The Airport: Back in the Skies (BBC 1/HD | 8:30pm to 9:00pm | Monday 16th May 2022)

In early November, Heathrow’s most lucrative US routes are opening up to double-vaxxed passengers. Two aircraft prepare for a historic dual take-off. Hayley, a senior airfield officer, is back from furlough and resolving gridlock on the taxiway as two planes come face to face. Footfall is growing but lost revenue from the closure of shops and restaurants poses a serious risk to Heathrow’s survival. Jeremy Spake meets an entrepreneur who is setting up a new restaurant in Terminal 2.

Nick Knowles meets Kettering mum of four Lindsey, who married her ex-Royal Engineer husband Shaun in December 2019, after which they began to extend their Kettering home. But help is on hand as the DIY SOS team, along with hundreds of local trades and several of Shaun’s old army buddies, step in to finish the job.

Will Young: Alcohol and My Brother Rupert (Channel 4/HD | 10:05pm to 11:10pm | Tuesday 10th May 2022)

Will Young lost his brother in July 2020 after a 20-year struggle with alcoholism. In this candid documentary, the singer talks about the pain of coping with a loved one’s addiction and sets out to understand the impact alcoholism can have on families. Among those he meets are a podcaster and campaigner who has battled her own issues with alcohol and an expert who works on the front line of addiction treatment.

Grand Designs: The Street (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:05pm | Wednesday 11th May 2022)

Kevin McCloud follows the progress of Army couple Leah and Craig, whose lives have been dictated by the military. They have designed a contemporary, timber-clad kit house where they can escape from the beige of the barracks. Kevin also meets Jitinder, who works as a consultant helping businesses operate more efficiently – skills he is using in the process of building his own Hollywood Hills-style bachelor pad.

The property show follows animator Joanna and carpenter Ben, who are building a magnificent American ranch-style house in a gritty part of Glasgow. Like the buildings of the Wild West which inspires them, the couple’s house will be made from simple materials with a structural Douglas fir frame and clad entirely in larch with a rustic tin roof. But with a tight budget of £170,000, Joanna and Ben can only afford it if they construct it themselves. The trouble is, they have never built a house before.

Changing Rooms (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 25th August 2021)

Cardiff couple Teresa and Andrew are desperate to turn their uninspiring front room into a cosy family space, while three doors down, their friends Maria and Nick hope their stark white living room can become a multifunctional family space. All they need is a little trust in each other and the assistance of designers Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead – not to mention carpenter Tibby Singh. Coastal Devon & Cornwall with Michael Portillo (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 25th August 2021) ** NEW SERIES **

The presenter travels across the two counties in south-west England. His journey begins in North Devon under the shadow of England’s highest sea cliff, the 1,000ft-tall Great Hangman, and finishes up on the stunning three-mile golden sands of Woolacombe. Along the way, Michael is joined by Raynor Winn, whose bestselling book The Salt Path is based on her experiences of walking the South West Coast Path with her terminally-ill husband, Moth. She tells of how it changed their lives, and offers tips and advice for Michael’s journey ahead, and how he should prepare for the challenges, both physical and emotional.

George Clarke’s Remarkable Renovations (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 25th August 2021)

The architect meets Bernie, who has bought a ramshackle stable on the banks of the Humber and plans to turn it into a luxury home for his retirement. Originally a large stable block serving a grand Victorian estate nearby, it comprises a saddle room, stalls and a tack room, but having only served as a home for horses, turning it into a luxury house is a brave move.

Ambulance (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 26th August 2021)

Advanced Paramedic Naomi rushes to a patient in cardiac arrest as the rest of the North West Ambulance Service battles the second wave of coronavirus. Crewmates Emily and Jo are dispatched to a patient 20 weeks pregnant with the virus, who has been waiting over two hours for an ambulance. On arrival, concern is heightened when it is revealed that the woman hasn’t felt her baby move since she first began to feel ill. Narrated by Christopher Eccleston.

Epic Wales: Valleys, Mountains & Coasts (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 27th August 2021)

Cameras catch up with Garry and his family on the Black Mountain in the Brecon Beacons. Lambing is in full swing, so it’s all hands on deck to keep a watch on this ever-expanding flock. Over on the Pembrokeshire coast, artist Charlotte Cortazzi heads for Broad Haven South Beach, where the sand provides a perfect canvas to create a spectacular work of art. Over on Anglesey, mother-and-daughter climbing team Libby Peter and Zoe Wood take on the intimidating `Mask of the Red Death” and there’s a buzz about the Brecon Beacons as bee farmers Gruffydd and Angharad move their hives up the mountain.

Motorhoming with Merton & Webster (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 27th August 2021)

Paul and Suki venture into Wales and the Brecon Beacons National Park. After a breathtaking drive along Sarn Helen, a network of ancient Roman roads, they arrive at their first port of call, where they go `sheep trekking” with local farmer Paul and his daughter, Nicola. They also have a go at sheep shearing, and Suki especially enjoys bottle-feeding the lambs.

Exploring a bizarre block in Taiwan resembling a giant speaker, a pioneering venture in Alaska, and an alpine village that masks a military beast.

The Industrial Revolution was the single most important event in the development of the modern railway and one train from that era came to symbolise the new age of steam, Stephenson’s Rocket. Documentary telling the stories of six young people whose fathers were killed in the 9/11 attacks, either before they were born, or before they had a chance to meet, and whose lives have been shaped by an event they didn’t witness. The programme features home movie footage shot over the course of their lives and candid accounts of their mothers of the attacks.

George Clarke’s Remarkable Renovations (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 18th August 2021)

Architect George Clarke visits Three Ways Farm near Stockport, which has been in Gordon’s family since the 1950s. His late mother’s dream was for Gordon to turn the 120-year-old cattle shed and milking parlour into a home for himself, so he and partner Lisa have set out to make that a reality, creating their first home together. Will it end up being something his mother would have been proud of?

Ambulance (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 19th August 2021)

The unit struggles to cope, with 20 per cent of staff off due to Covid-19 and four major hospitals operating at 95 per cent capacity. Advanced paramedic Joe races to a category one call for a patient in cardiac arrest and as he works to manage the team on scene, it becomes clear a difficult decision on whether further treatment to keep the patient alive is appropriate. In control, an emergency call from a child whose mother is not responding leaves the call handler feeling overwhelmed. Later, Alex and Abby offer support to a Covid-positive patient in a care home – the service’s 931st call-out of the shift.

Fishing Scotland’s Lochs and Rivers (Channel 5/HD | 7:00pm to 8:00pm | Friday 20th August 2021)

After two weeks fishing their way across the lochs and rivers of Scotland, the five anglers arrive at Oban on the west coast of Scotland. However, Les Dennis bows out for the day, leaving Rosemary Shrager and Shane Lynch harbour-bound to sample the freshly landed delights alone.
