Tenor Nicky Spence celebrates his homeland with a rousing medley of Scottish songs and a rendition of Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat from the hit musical Guys and Dolls, before performances of Holst’s Jupiter and all the Last Night traditions, from Land of Hope and Glory to Auld Lang Syne.

When a kayaker calls a friend to say she’s in trouble out at sea, the line suddenly goes dead, and the Happisburgh lifeboat crew finally find her over a mile off shore, face down and unresponsive. In St Helier, the capital of Jersey, a family have had to abandon their grounded yacht, leaving four young children in a life raft. On the north Yorkshire coast, the Withernsea crew respond to a 999 call from a young man cut off on some notoriously unstable cliffs. And in Littlehampton, West Sussex, a mayday call comes in from a dive boat that has lost engine power – leaving two of its divers drifting away.
