In the run-up to Christmas 2021, with the UK in the grip of a crippling shortage of lorry drivers, a training school in Croydon is putting new recruits behind the wheel. This documentary follows them through five days of intensive coaching from veteran instructors at the National Driving Centre, before they take their test on Croydon’s roads – featuring notorious roundabouts and the dreaded reversing manoeuvre.

Chris Harris, Paddy McGuiness and Freddie Flintoff aren’t choosing their own cars, but instead choosing for one another. After unwrapping their presents in the Welsh village of Bethlehem, the trio set off on a yuletide trek across Britain, stopping off to play the game of `High-Speed Visual Charades” and deliver an enormous tree to the Unesco World Heritage city of Bath. Then it’s time for the presenters to visit the Top Gear test track, transformed into a winter wonderland of speed.

Crowds heading to the TRNSMT music festival hit the concourse and one young staff member with a new customer service supervisory role is thrown in at the deep end. Meanwhile, tour guide Jackie and the maintenance team investigate a watery mystery in the station’s basements, and author Judith Vallely tells the story of how Suffragettes descended on Central Station in 1914 to trying to stop their leader Emmeline Pankhurst being sent back to London – and jail.

Archaeologist Ben Robinson visits Alnmouth, Northumberland, which was founded in the mid-12th century after the barons of nearby Alnwick obtained a charter from King John to build a new village. It had a market and a small port and the village flourished – so much so that by the mid-1700s, Alnmouth’s grain export started to play an integral role in feeding the growing English population.

Salt water and iron don’t mix and Southend Pier, built back in 1888, has seen better days. Now a team of specialists are working hard to prevent it falling into the sea.

The Scalextric team attempt to tap into the brand’s glory years, the 1980s, and devise a plan to create a model of a classic supercar, the Lamborghini Countach.

The Thames By Night (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 17th December 2021)

The presenter is on the West London stretch of the Thames, and here he discovers how night-shift workers contend with the river’s tides. Tony joins the fire service based at Lambeth, who deal with emergencies on the river, as they practice rescuing a body from the freezing waters in the pitch black.

A perfect diecast replica of a 1940’s Merchant Navy steam locomotive is the task for Hornby’s design team.

Stonehenge is one of the world’s greatest mysteries. Now, a new discovery found deep in the soil of the surrounding area is threatening to upturn everything we think we know about this 4,500 year-old landmark. Rob Bell joins archaeologists, scientists and engineers who have uncovered a vast, previously undetected monument that is many times the size of the original henge.

The Thames By Night (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 10th December 2021)

Tony reveals how the Thames plays a vital role in keeping London – and beyond – on the move, and how it is a 24/7 operation – when the transport network is so busy during the day, it’s only at night that crucial maintenance and repairs can be done. His first night shift is with the engineers and cleaners at Thames Clippers – responsible for turning around a whole fleet of commuter boats overnight, ready for the next morning.

The adventurer explores the wild and rugged coast of Cumbria and learns how central the county is to many of the challenges facing Britain. Archaeologist Ben Robinson explores the history of Charlestown in Cornwall, revealing how the villages’s namesake Charles Rashleigh transformed the local trade and commerce from fishing and distribution of pilchards, to minerals exported by a hand-built port with pioneering technology. Ben looks at how Charles commissioned renowned engineer John Smeaton to create man-made lakes and hand-dug ponds, and explores their impact on the village’s prosperity.

Amanda Owen crosses hills and fields through Wensleydale and Raydale, taking ancient routes first made by the Romans and exchanging notes with fellow sheep farmers. Crossing over the dale, she drops down to Semer Water, ending her walk on the pebble banks.

Alastair Campbell treks across the snow-covered hillsides of Ribblesdale in the Yorkshire Dales. Starting at a waterfall above the market town of Settle, the political veteran descends into town, meeting local residents who are also out braving the weather. Along the way, Alastair talks about his mental health and how time in this space can help him focus

Winter Walks (BBC 4/HD | 7:30pm to 8:00pm | Wednesday 1st December 2021)

The Rev Kate Bottley treks across the snow-dusted landscape of Wensleydale and Coverdale, setting off as the sun rises over the ruins of Jervaulx Abbey. She walks along the banks of the river Cover and into the dale of the same name, along the way reflecting on her faith and relationships, before ending her journey at Middleham Castle, the ruined fortress that was a childhood home of Richard III.

Broadcaster Nihal Arthanayake explores coast and countryside around the Cumbria and Lancashire border, and finds local characters, breathtaking views and moments of serenity along the way. Starting in the town of Arnside and looking out over the mudflats of Morecambe Bay, Nihal heads south with just his 360-degree camera for company. Along the way, he passes Arnside Tower and crosses the border into Lancashire. Views from the top of Arnside Knott and from hidden coves on the Silverdale coast showcase the beauty of this corner of the country, as he `declutters” his mind and reflects on the importance of solitude.

Along with their proud humans, Darcey, Nodens and Ro are tested on three key challenges – Recall, Agility and Bond – before the Scotland’s Best Dog judges, Kaye Adams, animal behaviourist River McDonald and Scottish SPCA veteran and dog trainer, Alan Grant.
