In a forbidden library at the heart of the Vatican, the pope urges the Doctor to read the ancient text – but can he handle the truth?

Yorkshire Wolds Way (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 8:30pm | Saturday 20th May 2017)

Adventurer Paul Rose explores the 79 miles of the Yorkshire Wolds Way, arguably Britain’s least well-known national walking trail. In this edition, Paul takes to the skies to get a unique view of this stretch of chalk downland and gets a special invitation to a military base that has been keeping the country safe since the start of WWII.

The Fifteen Billion Pound Railway (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 22nd May 2017)

This series follows more than ten thousand engineers and construction workers as they race to complete the brand new railway directly underneath the city – Crossrail, London’s new Underground. Costing fifteen billion pounds, it is the biggest engineering project in Europe. Linda Miller, an engineer more at home constructing space launch complexes, must build what will become Britain’s busiest station – Farringdon – an underground structure longer than the Shard is tall. Linda and her team battle ancient fault lines, race to build emergency access tunnels to alleviate congestion and piece together a giant geometric jigsaw that will form a cathedral-sized station entrance. The episode ends with a very special visitor arriving on site to give the railway its new title.

Britain’s Busiest Airport – Heathrow (itv/HD | 9:000pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 24th May 2017)

Series following Heathrow Airport’s army of 76,000 staff – from plumbers to pilots to police – as they deal with 200,000 passengers a day in a never-ending race to get thousands of planes away on time. In this episode, passenger experience manager Numan has a challenge on his hands when a flight to New York is cancelled and 40 angry passengers demand to be rebooked immediately. As snow and ice threaten to close the runways, airside operations driver Hugh swings into action to drive a special runway de-icer. A team of Border Force officers and sniffer dog Ruby patiently wait at the departure gate, hoping to seize cash that could be linked to crime. Their powers of detection are tested when they have to make the seizures in just 30 minutes before the plane departs. One of the busiest departures of the week is the flight to Dhaka in Bangladesh. Customer service agents Carrie-Anne and Selina bravely step up to the plate in order to get the passengers boarded and the plane away on time.

The Truth About HIV (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 25th May 2017)

As trials are announced in Britain of a new preventative drug, Dr Chris van Tulleken explores the latest science around HIV, meeting health professionals, scientists, and individuals affected by the virus in the UK and South Africa, challenging the myths and stigma surrounding it.

Series following Heathrow Airport’s army of 76,000 staff – from plumbers to pilots to police – as they deal with 200,000 passengers a day in a never-ending race to get thousands of planes away on time. In this episode, travellers face the challenges of transferring in the five-square-mile airport, with 200 gates and four terminals. Passenger experience manager Jawad battles a language barrier to get 72 Chinese tourists to their connecting flights to Lisbon. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police have a dedicated sniffer dog unit looking for explosives. Water services engineers Jon, Vic and Scott hunt for a sewage leak in the 500-mile labyrinth of pipes beneath the airport.

Babs, ever the consummate professional, never lets her fans down whatever her personal anguish and steps on the stage to rapturous applause.

Series following the staff and patients at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. In this edition, Rose is rushed to the hospital and waits to find out if a kidney from a deceased donor is a match for her, we meet Maureen and her best friend Del, who is about to donate one of her kidneys to her life-long pal, and the staff in the Emergency Department are surprised to see how a man in his 50s reacts to a painkiller after he breaks his ankle skateboarding.

Documentary series which follows Heathrow Airport’s army of 76,000 staff – from plumbers to pilots to police – as they deal with 200,000 passengers a day in a never-ending race to get thousands of planes away on time. In this episode, a passenger arrives from Doha on the way to Dublin, but his final flight of the journey has been booked from Gatwick, almost 40 miles away. Can passenger experience manager Sue battle a cultural barrier in order to help him? Meanwhile, engineering apprentice Matt heads out onto the runway to calibrate the arrival lights and gets closer to a 747 than he ever thought possible. There is a massive new arrival in the shape of a brand new 787 Dreamliner plane, with senior first officer Dave flying to Seattle to collect the new aircraft. Finally, the airport’s dedicated fire brigade extinguishes a fire on a 747, but fortunately it is just a drill.

In this edition, hospital staff are excited to be part of a new clinical trial which could revolutionise kidney dialysis for thousands of patients around the world. Eight-year-old Charlotte has an operation to enlarge her windpipe and help her avoid terrifying bouts of croup, and 50-year-old Peter has an operation to remove his brain tumour – all while awake.

Classic Albums (BBC 4/HD | 10:00pm to 11:00pm | Friday 5th May 2017)

Documentary series focusing in a unique way on the great albums that have influenced the course of music and touched generations. This edition looks at Carly Simon’s 1972 album No Secrets. In a new interview Carly ties together her life and work on No Secrets – she is at her most honest, sometimes defiant, but with a wit and wisdom that comes from her rich and turbulent life. Carly had a number of highly public affairs in the early 70s and her experience fed into the album’s most famous song, the global hit You’re So Vain. She performs the missing fourth verse on the piano – the first time she has ever sung it along with the melody. Carly tells of how her producer made her do the vocal track on You’re So Vain over and over, and how Mick Jagger ended up on backing vocals. Finally, the film includes footage of Taylor Swift and Carly Simon performing You’re So Vain together.

Series following the staff and patients at Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. In this edition, a 12-strong trauma team assemble as man who was in a head-on collision with a lorry near Loch Fyne is helicoptered to the rooftop helipad. In the children’s hospital, 18-year-old Connor, who has leukaemia, faces an agonising decision over his treatment and his studies. The programme meets one of the 200 porters who are the worker bees of the hospital, walking miles on every shift, and the baby who can now have his cleft lip and palate repaired under anaesthetic by the top plastic surgeons in the country.

Inside the Tube: Going Underground (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 24th April 2017)

The Piccadilly Line is famed for its glamorous stops, which include Knightsbridge and the West End, but Rob Bell discovers how it also played an important part in saving the tube from bankruptcy, and changing public transport as we know it.

Me and My Dog (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 26th April 2017)

Chris Packham hosts a physical and mental competition in the Lake District, where eight owners and their dogs compete together in a series of challenges. It is the final stage of the contest and the Reds have one last challenge to determine which pairs go through to the final. It all comes down to a fiendishly difficult canine intelligence test which involves Lake Windermere and some dog toys. One pair prove just how far they have come and Toni is finally convinced that Flapjack is actually quite clever. Then it is the final – a human-dog triathlon involving a two-kilometre bike race over rugged terrain, a 100-metre open-water swim and a one-and-a-half-kilometre cross-country run. It is a race to the finish and the Me and My Dog Champions are unveiled. It is a chance for everyone to reflect on what they have learned and it is a celebration of a very special species many of us choose to share our lives with.

Mind Over Marathon (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 27th April 2017)

Two-part documentary in which a group of ten unlikely runners living with different mental health issues are brought together by Nick Knowles to train for the ultimate test – the 2017 London Marathon. This episode sees the remaining nine runners juggling physical injuries along with their mental health challenges and trying to fit training into their lives. They attempt longer and longer distances and even travel to the Brecon Beacons for a mountain run. The episode catches up with Rhian, Shereece, Jake and Poppy, who struggles with anxiety and the symptoms of PTSD. The runners are joined at a training day by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. The royal trio have launched Heads Together, a campaign to remove the stigma around mental health issues and are keen to meet the runners and learn more about their experiences.

Barging Brits in the Sun (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pn to 9:00pm | Friday 28th April 2017)

An affectionate look at how Britain’s canals are becoming great again, with more and more people choosing to escape the rat race and climb aboard a canal boat for a slower pace of life, from a former Bond girl with a £100,000 boat to the UK’s top Elvis tribute act and a family taking their first ever boating holiday.

Mind Over Marathon (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 20th April 2017)

Two-part film in which a group of ten unlikely runners living with different mental health issues are brought together by Nick Knowles to train for the ultimate test – the 2017 London Marathon. The group come from all over the country to meet for the first time at a training camp. Among the runners is Rhian, a mum-of-three who lost her one-year-old son to pneumonia and five days later lost her husband as well. She struggles with PTSD and anxiety and can’t run on her own when she starts this process. Shereece had postpartum after the birth of her first child and struggles with depression and panic attacks, and persuading her family that mental health problems are a real illness. Brighton barman Jake has struggled with depression, but wants to try running as a way to help cope with his illness. The episode follows them up to the point of getting ready for the challenge of running their first 10k race – an important milestone if they are to make the marathon starting line.

Dial “B” for Britain: The Story of the Landline (BBC 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 20th April 2017)

Timeshift journeys back to the age of the landline – a distant era when phones weren’t pocket-sized wireless devices, but bulky objects wired into our homes and workplaces. Over the course of 100 years, a communications network was rolled out to join up Britain, bringing commercial and social change in its wake. Yet despite ongoing technical innovation, the phone service often struggled to meet demand. From the speaking clock to the Trimphone, the first public call boxes to the Post Office Tower, this is the story of how Britain got connected, told by the operators and engineers themselves, and featuring rarely seen archive footage.

Tony Robinson: Coast to Coast (Chnanel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 21st April 2017)

Tony Robinson explores the 200-mile coast-to-coast walking trail made famous by Alfred Wainwright. En route to Robin Hood’s Bay, his final destination on the North Yorkshire coast, Tony meets people who are determined to keep the local industries alive, including a steam railway. He also visits RAF Fylingdales, a family-run bakery and the area’s last shipyard in Whitby, and enjoys a day of whale-watching.

The charming animated sequel to Raymond Briggs’s classic The Snowman. When a young boy, Billy, and his mother move house, he discovers a snowman-making kit hidden under his bedroom floorboards. When it begins to snow, Billy builds a Snowman and, with some spare snow, a Snowdog. At the stroke of midnight, the Snowman and the Snowdog magically come to life. Billy awakes and joins them on an amazing adventure, flying over London and onwards to the North Pole, where they join snowmen and snowwomen from around the world. Billy even meets Father Christmas before returning home, where a wonderful surprise awaits him.

Call the Midwife (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:30pm | Sunday 25th December 2016)

Drama about a group of midwives in 1950s London, based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth. When a small South African mission hospital that has links with the Order is threatened with closure, Sister Julienne procures the assistance of Sister Winifred, Trixie, Barbara, Nurse Crane, Dr Turner, Shelagh, Fred and Tom Hereward to try and save it. The Nonnatus team travel to Africa and are soon faced with a range of challenges. The biggest hurdle is a neighbouring white farmer, who refuses access across his land for a new water pipe which could save the clinic’s future. The team dig deep and achieve real success – a completed polio immunisation programme, several trips to save lives in remote locations and a caesarean performed by candlelight. In their attempt to save the hospital and make a difference to the lives of the people that use it, some of their own lives are changed forever.

Roads Less Travelled – Sutherland, Caithness and Orkney: Dornoch Point to St John’s Point (BBC 2 Scotland & BBC iPlayer only | 6:00pm to 7:00pm | Tuesday 27th December 2016)

Dornoch Point to St John’s Point. First of two Adventure Show specials in which Cameron McNeish undertakes a 150-mile journey through some of the least visited parts of Scotland, from the southern end of Sutherland to the northern tip of the Orkney islands. Travelling on foot, by bike and with his beloved camper van, Cameron begins his journey in the cathedral town of Dornoch before heading up the eastern coast and into the remote flow country of Caithness.

The Orkney Islands. Second of two Adventure Show specials in which Cameron McNeish undertakes a 150-mile journey through some of the least visited parts of Scotland, from the southern end of Sutherland to the northern tip of the Orkney islands. In this episode, Cameron explores the lesser-known aspects of six Orkney islands. His guests include those whose families have lived there for generations, as well as relative newcomers who have made the journey north to become part of a vibrant community. He also explores some of the archaeological remains found on the islands, meets two traditional musicians, discovers why the islands are so environmentally important and spends time with a former lighthouse keeper turned beachcomber.

Gary Lineker, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan host BBC Sports Personality of the Year, live from the SSE Arena, Belfast. It’s been another incredible 12 months of sporting excellence and this world famous show – now in its 62nd year – again recognises some of the standout achievers. Stars from the sporting world are among the 7,500 crowd in Northern Ireland’s capital city and, as ever, there is a full review of the sporting year.

Reggie Yates’ Extreme UK (BBC 3/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 21st December 2015)

Being a British guy in 2015 is not easy, and in this series Reggie Yates travels to the extreme edge of modern British masculinity, to discover that 21st-century pressures are changing the way we live, the way we love, and even the way we look. Reggie investigates the extreme ways in which male body culture is impacting on young British guys – from extreme exercise to invasive plastic surgery and even steroid abuse. As Reggie embarks on his own challenge to get into shape he asks what it’s all for and follows the story from a private hospital in Istanbul to a lock-up in the Midlands and beyond.

Cherry Healey goes behind the scenes of one of the nation’s biggest stores to find out how it survives the pressure cooker of Christmas. Since more than 50 per cent of many retailers’ annual profits are made in the last quarter of the year, for John Lewis and its competitors, Christmas has become a year-long, full-scale military campaign. Charting the relentless countdown to Christmas 2015 – from the midsummer Christmas press launch, to the honing of the ad, to the discounting frenzy of Black Friday – Cherry sees the John Lewis team tackling the multitude of challenges presented by our changing shopping habits. In the run-in to this Christmas, they have to contend with customer complaints, website woes and unpredictable buying behaviour. Cherry discovers how John Lewis is now catering for a new breed of savvy online shoppers. The competition used to be rivals on the high street, like Debenhams and M&S, but now the retailer has to contend with a host of online rivals too.

Ellie then snakes up the coast to Ullapool to find out how one small native fish could be the answer to the salmon-farming industry’s prayers. Joe Crowley is in the east, riding the NC500 through Sutherland’s fertile planes. He stops off to meet the young couple who have jacked it all in to live the crofting life. He then drives on to the Black Isle – so called because of its rich black fertile soils. Here, he meets the farmers growing premium barley destined for the whiskey industry. Tom investigates the high number of traffic accidents that happen on our rural roads, while Adam discovers that the future of UK energy production may be straw powered.

Dolphins that leave the safety of the sea to fish, walking octopuses, ingenious monkeys, fishing wolves and the greatest gathering of feeding humpback whales come to the coast to hunt. For all, timing is everything.

Bothy Life celebrates their work, as well the spirit of adventure and camaraderie of those who step out into the hills.

Chris Evans and Fearne Cotton host the second annual BBC Music Awards from the Genting Arena in Birmingham, celebrating an amazing 12 months of popular music across the BBC. The spectacular show features stand-out performances of some of this year’s biggest songs by artists including One Direction, Rod Stewart, Ellie Goulding, Faithless, Hozier, James Bay, Jess Glynne, Little Mix, Mumford and Sons, OMI, Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott, the Shires and Jack Garratt, who will also be crowned BBC Introducing Artist of the Year. Other awards presented during the show include British Artist of the Year, International Artist of the Year, the public-voted Song of the Year and, new for 2015, BBC Live Performance of the Year. The BBC Concert Orchestra also performs alongside many of the artists.

Guy Martin: Last Flight of the Vulcan Bomber (Channel 4/HD | 7:30pm to 9:00pm | Sunday 29th November 2015)

The last airworthy Vulcan bomber, XH558, flew for the final time to great fanfare in October this year. This iconic plane played a pivotal role in protecting UK interests in the post-World War II era as the first nuclear deterrent, and was also responsible for the longest raid in British military history when it successfully attacked enemy targets in the Falkland Islands. Mechanic Guy Martin is given unprecedented access to the aircraft, helping a select group of engineers prepare it for an ambitious farewell tour around of Britain. He also gets the rare chance to fly alongside the plane in formation, as well as taking the controls to try and ‘wheelie’ the 70-tonne aircraft along a runway. This 90-minute documentary is the definitive story of the Vulcan bomber, featuring expert contributions from Vulcan pilots and crew who faced the awesome responsibility of potentially having to drop nuclear bombs.

Together they make up one of the most stunning and isolated railway systems in Europe. Along the way, Alasdair meets historians, experts, engineers and fellow enthusiasts and brings this amazing railway’s story to life. From the enormous engineering feats needed to build it to the massive impact that it had on the Highland communities, this programme tells the story of a railway that is unique in many different ways.

Documentary series about the wildlife of Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park in Scotland, filmed across one year. The winter is mild and wet, which is good news for some but bad news for others. Red deer are forced to higher ground, salmon have gone six months without food, mountain hares turn a conspicuous white, and squirrels kick their own young out of the nest.
