The Lost Hero of 9/11 (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 2nd September 2013)

When the Twin Towers collapsed on September 11, 2001, almost everyone underneath them was killed. But two men were trapped, buried alive, 30 feet deep, under the rubble. As fires raged around them, the official rescue effort had been suspended, and they thought they were going to die, until they heard a voice shouting ‘US Marine Corps; can anybody hear me?’ This man then climbed down and saved them, before disappearing without a trace. His identity remained a mystery.

Silent Witness: Buried Lies. Series 1, episode 1 (Drama | 9:00pm to 11:00pm | Tuesday 3rd September 2013)

Edgy crime drama with the great Amanda Burton as the female forensic pathologist who has a habit of cracking the cases that the police can’t. A feature-length episode, originally shown in two parts. Suspecting that a drowned child had been a victim of physical abuse, Dr Ryan reopens another case involving a child’s death. The common factor, Gary Philips, was the mother’s partner at the time of the death three years earlier.

Bad Education (BBC3 | 10:00pm to 10:30pm | Tuesday 3rd September 2013)

School-based sitcom. Abbey Grove’s new term kicks off with the annual swimming gala and headmaster Mr Fraser decides to pay homage to the fact the UK recently hosted the greatest show on earth, Splash, by ending it with their very own synchronised diving competition. Alfie and his class don’t usually take part in the gala, but lured by a cash bet with deputy headmistress Miss Pickwell he decides to bribe them with a group trip to a restaurant and enter the event. The first day back is also a chance for Alfie to catch up with his girlfriend Miss Gulliver, but he’s shocked to find out that he isn’t in a relationship with her at all, and even more shocked to find out who she is actually dating.

Grand Designs (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 4th September 2013)

Kevin McCloud returns with a new series of the popular property show. Gwyn and Kate were desperate for more space for their growing family and had set on building a traditional new house for themselves. But their plans changed when they fell for a decaying classic 1920s cinema in the heart of their home town of Thorne in South Yorkshire. With little knowledge of either restoration or building, they boldly set about renovating and extending this wreck to make a family home. Their ideas about having a conventional place to live are thrust aside by their old school friend, an architect who convinces them to use concrete – and masses of it – to turn their dilapidated building into an unlikely homage to modernism. Behind the beautifully restored 1920s facade, brutal concrete walls emerge, as well as massive expanses of glass.

The Last Leg (Channel 4/HD | 10:00pm to 10:50pm | Wednesday 4th September 2013)

Mayor of London Boris Johnson is the celebrity guest as he joins host Adam Hills and co-hosts Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker to take a look at the weird and wonderful stories of the week, live in front of a studio audience. The show also features the all-encompassing question: Is It OK? Viewers at home and the studio audience are encouraged to ask this question about anything from the week, without fear of judgement, and the three hosts attempt to step into the minefield of sometimes difficult and delicate areas and answer the questions with their own unique insight.

Waterloo Road (BBC1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 5th September 2013)

School-based drama. As the school mourns the loss of Tom, Audrey gets out of her depth when she suspects new pupils, Lenny and Lisa, are being neglected. Elsewhere, newly qualified science teacher Sue feels the pressure while deputy head Simon harbours a secret.

The Railway: First Great Western (Channel 5 | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 5th September 2013)

Documentary series following the working lives of the staff of First Great Western, one of Britain’s largest train operating companies. Problems arise when 15,000 extra passengers descend on one tiny station, tempers boil over when the Glastonbury music festival disrupts the regular commute, a station goes on lockdown when a man falls onto the tracks and a picturesque branch line receives a royal visit.

Mum and Dad are Splitting Up (BBC2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 5th September 2013)

With a third of British children living with only one biological parent, this simple but revealing film ventures into the heart of British family life to ask young people about their experience of their parents’ breakup. Based entirely on honest, intimate interviews with both young people and their parents, drawing out the complex feelings and secrets that took root in the family when mum and dad split up. In the process, both parents and their offspring find themselves asking questions of each other that have remained unsaid for years, and being frequently surprised by the answers.

Big School (BBC1/HD | 9:00pm to 9:30pm | Friday 6th September 2013)

Comedy series set in a secondary school. Miss Postern warns the other teachers to be sensitive with troubled pupil Josh when his mother runs off with a Maasai tribesman. Perhaps giving him a part in the bold reimagining of Romeo and Juliet put on by the drama department will take his mind off things. Mr Church has lost his job as theatre critic for the school magazine, so Miss Postern steps in to watch the show with Josh’s dad for company. Could Mr Church be just a little bit jealous?

Tour De France 2013 Highlights (itv4 | 7pm to 8pm | Saturday 29th June 2013)

Highlights from stage one of the 100th edition of the Tour starts on the Island of Corsica, the only area of France that has never hosted the Tour before. The first 213km stage runs through the magnificent scenery of Corsica towards the finish in Bastia where the winner will almost certainly be a sprinter. This is a golden opportunity for Mark Cavendish to claim the yellow jersey. Presented by Gary Imlach with analysis fom Chris Boardman, and Ned Boulting is out at the roadside. Commentary by Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen.

Top Gear (BBC2/HD | 8pm to 9pm | Sunday 30th June 2013)

The motoring magazine returns with the action kicking off in New Zealand, as Jeremy Clarkson and James May race a car against a boat in a nail-biting battle up the beautiful coastline to the very tip of the North Island. The boat is a state-of-the-art America’s Cup yacht, while the car is of a type many are familiar with yet have never before seen on Top Gear. Meanwhile, back in the UK, Richard Hammond attempts to find a hot hatch hero from a trio of newcomers, the Renaultsport Clio 200, Peugeot 208 GTI and Ford Fiesta ST, and a cavalcade of top stars assemble at the track to welcome a brand new Reasonably Priced Car.

Undercover Boss (Channel 4/HD | 9pm to 10pm | Monday 1st July 2013)

New series of the show in which high-flying executives take extraordinary steps to ensure their companies are fighting fit by going undercover in their own businesses. Starting the series is DHL. In the three years since Chief Executive Phil Couchman became boss, he’s seen the company’s turnover reach a massive 800 million pounds. But rapid expansion brings its own problems. So, Phil is heading back to the frontline to work alongside his staff. Terrified of losing even a single customer to fierce competition, Phil aims to find out if workers are delivering the top notch service he expects. But when the CEO goes undercover he discovers a stretched workforce and customer service staff who are tied up in red tape. And, moved by a courier who supports his family in Brazil but has no job security, another whose job is stretching his body to breaking point, and finally couriers being paid unfairly, Phil is forced to consider whether DHL have more to worry about than just their customers.

The Route Masters: Running London’s Roads (BBC2/HD | 9pm to 10pm | Tuesday 2nd July 2013)

More people now travel on London buses each day than on the rest of the UK’s buses combined. With passenger numbers up sixty percent since 2000, the capital’s bus drivers are under colossal pressure. And from their cab, they see how our behaviour has changed in that time. Driver Alex is an old hand who complains that no-one says hello to him any more. Driver Sadie thinks we are all in such a hurry we are heading for nervous breakdowns. Trainee driver Christine is worried about getting lost. Behind every driver is a controller who tracks drivers’ whereabouts and tells them to hurry up and slow down. The controllers themselves must hit strict targets if the service is to stay on track. The answer to all this pressure may lie in Transport for London’s big new idea: to bring back the Routemaster, with conductors. We see the new 21st century Routemaster being built in the factory in Northern Ireland, and follow it as it hits the streets of London. Will it make bus travel fun again?

School-based drama. Grantly is alive and Tom is finally ready to donate his kidney. But when former bad boy pupil Kyle Stack shows up at Waterloo Road, matters take a turn for the worse after Tom tries to help the troubled boy.

Summer’s Supermarket Secrets (BBC1/HD | 9pm to 10pm | Thursday 4th July 2013)

Gregg Wallace goes behind the scenes with Britain’s biggest food retailers over the course of a year to discover how they source, make and move the food we find on the supermarket shelves. He has exclusive access to the buyers, product developers, food technologists and backroom teams, and gets the insider’s guide to how much they know about us and our tastes. In this, the first of four episodes, Gregg reveals how the supermarkets bring us our summer favourites. He finds out why there is more than meets the eye in a supermarket strawberry, what it takes to bring us our barbeques, and how they stay one step ahead of the weather.

Andy Murray: The Man Behind the Racquet (BBC1/HD | 10:25pm to 11:25pm | Sunday 23rd June 2013)

Documentary following tennis player Andy Murray, a US Open and Olympic champion, revealing just what it takes to be a global sports star. The programme looks at Murray’s life off the court, filled with a comprehensive list of commitments and responsibilities, including fashion shoots and charity and media work. Cameras follow the Scot as he takes an open-top bus ride in his home town of Dunblane, does Pilates in Miami, takes ice baths in Monte Carlo and undergoes rehabilitation for an injury in Surrey. A private and shy man, Murray won the hearts of many with his raw emotion at Wimbledon and earned a place in history by winning the US Open to become Britain’s first male Grand Slam champion in 76 years. There are contributions from Murray’s girlfriend Kim Sears, mother Judy, brother Jamie and coach Ivan Lendl as well as his rivals Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer and tennis greats Andre Agassi and John McEnroe.

Julien Temple’s acclaimed film celebrating and documenting the history of the Glastonbury Festival. Concert footage, interviews, archive and home video combine to capture the essence and spirit of Glastonbury. British National Elite Road Race Championship Highlights (itv4 | 7:00pm to 8:00pm | Monday 24th June 2013)

Highlights from the biggest single day road race on the British cycling calendar which this year comes from Glasgow. Riders will be utilising part of the proposed course for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. The men will be riding 182km of the 14km circuit, and the women 112km.

Wild Cameramen at Work: Sea. Episode 4 (BBC1 Scotland/HD only and iPlayer | 7:30pm to 8:00pm | Monday 24th June 2013)

Series in which five of the best wildlife cameramen in the world spotlight some of their favourite natural history moments. Int his final programme, cameramen Doug Anderson and Doug Allan reveal the technical challenges of filming under the sea and encounter animals as diverse as blue whales, white-tip sharks and the weedy sea dragon performing a graceful courtship dance. Narrated by David Attenborough.

Life Savers (BBC1/HD | 9pm to 10pm | Tuesday 25th June 2013)

Documentary revealing the life and death dilemmas faced at the very limits of frontline medicine. Critical Care paramedic Dan Cody rushes to help seventeen-year-old Molly who’s lying in agony on a busy road, having been knocked off her moped on the way home from college. Her broken leg and badly smashed pelvis means she needs Dan’s drugs, far more potent than carried by normal ambulance crews. At hospital, surgeon Julian Owen discovers her hip is even worse than originally thought – she has a long and dangerous operation ahead of her. Dr Adam Chesters is on duty in the Emergency Department when a highly critical patient is transferred to Addenbrookes with a head injury. David has been attacked around the head with a hammer in a horrific assault. For a couple of days he is able to talk and brain specialist Peter Hutchinson is hopeful. But as his condition deteriorates, Peter must convey a less optimistic outlook to David’s family.

The Route Masters: Running London’s Roads: Nightbus (BBC2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:05pm | Tuesday 25th June 2013)

Series revealing how TFL and the police keep London’s roads moving in the face of extreme pressure. This episode explores the world of London’s nightbuses. As London has become a more 24-hour city since 2000, the number of passengers travelling at night has tripled. The nightbus service has grown to cope with the demand, but now its drivers face an unpredictable crowd. Duane Williams, a nightbus driver from Brixton bus garage, likes the ladies but some of his passengers are just too loud for him. Driver Tommy McKerr faces trouble on the notorious N25 route when a gang of young men storm his bus without paying. And Jeff, a homeless person, shows us how he has perfected the art of riding the longest nightbus route in London all night to keep warm.

Airport Live (BBC2/HD | 8pm to 9pm | Monday 17th June 2013)

In one of BBC Two’s most ambitious live broadcasts, Dan Snow, Dallas Campbell and Anita Rani go airside at Heathrow, the world’s busiest international hub airport. More than 200,000 passengers travel through Heathrow each day. Everything and everyone is on a deadline. Unprecedented behind-the-scenes access allows viewers to witness this daily relay race first-hand. The programme shows air traffic control in action and explains the extraordinary science and logistics behind every flight. Dan is based at the heart of the airport, the air traffic control tower, giving an eagle’s eye view of the complex choreography of landings, departures and ground movements. He finds out how Heathrow went from a row of tents to an international powerhouse welcoming 70 million passengers a year. Anita discovers how weather affects the airport each day, not just when it snows. And Dallas looks at first class on the A380, the world’s largest passenger jet.

Dallas Campbell learns to hand-marshal a plane on the tarmac, and Anita Rani finds out how Heathrow trains to deal with extreme weather. Plus the programme follows, live, a shorthaul flight turnaround. The plane has just 45 minutes from landing until it takes off again.

The Route Masters: Running London’s Roads (BBC2/HD | 9pm to 10pm | Tuesday 18th June 2013)

Series revealing how TFL and the police keep London’s roads moving in the face of extreme pressure. This episode follows the TFL staff who try to keep a city constantly on the verge of gridlock moving. At the Blackwall Tunnel, the most crucial mile of road in the whole city, tow truck driver Sean has to deal with a pregnant motorist who can not face driving through the tunnel. Meanwhile in the central control room, operator Chris has to cope with multiple accidents blocking the roads on a single Friday night. On the ground, Gurkha roadmender Indra faces abuse about his pothole repairs. Finally, one typical rush hour morning, a helicopter crashes into a crane near a busy interchange. Can the roads team stop the city grinding to a halt?

Airport Live (BBC2/HD | 8pm to 9pm | Wednesday 19th June 2013)

The third episode of the series looking behind the scenes at Heathrow Airport, revealing the people, systems and science that keep us flying. Dan Snow is at the heart of the airport in air traffic control, and the programme follows all the preparations that ready a long-haul flight for take-off. Dallas Campbell is in Heathrow’s paint bay, finding out about the hundreds of markings that must be painstakingly painted on to every plane. And Anita Rani discovers that as you fly off on holiday, you could be sitting above anything from mango to mail, cars to cougars.

Horizon: Fracking – The New Energy Rush (BBC2/HD | 9pm to 10pm | Wednesday 19th June 2013)

Iain Stewart investigates a new and controversial energy rush for the natural gas found deep underground. Sometimes, this is right under the places people live in. Getting it out of the ground involves hydraulic fracturing – or fracking. Iain travels to America to find to find out what it is, why it is a potential game changer and what we can learn from the US experience. He meets some of the people who have become rich from fracking as well as the communities worried about the risks.

School-based drama. Michael is back with a last ditch attempt to stop Lorraine from turning Waterloo Road into a fee-paying academy. If his efforts fail it spells the end of both his headship and his relationship with Christine. Elsewhere, Lula’s campaign against Nox comes to a shocking conclusion.

Airport Live (BBC2/HD | 8pm to 9pm | Thursday 20th June 2013)

In the final episode of the live behind-the-scenes series from Heathrow, Dan Snow sees if he has got what it takes to be an air traffic controller and Anita Rani finds out how tomorrow’s planes might offer a quieter future. Dallas Campbell, whose father used to fly 747s, is at the controls of a flight simulator to see if he can land an A380, the biggest passenger jet in the sky.

Documentary revealing the life and death dilemmas faced at the very limits of frontline medicine. This episode explores how the major trauma network rushes critical patients to the world-famous hub at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge, and the difficult decisions doctors face when trying to save a life. Specially trained emergency medics Adam and Neil are sent to a car that has hit a tree at speed. The driver is trapped in the wreckage by his legs, and the risk of massive bleeding the moment he is released means Adam takes control of the scene. At Addenbrookes, the emergency department receives two patients from another car that has hit a tree.

Flights and Fights: Inside the Low Cost Airlines (BBC2/HD | 9pm to 10pm | Thursday 20th June 2013)

Documentary telling the inside story of low-cost airlines – a tale of big characters and big money. Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary and EasyJet’s Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou opened up new frontiers in the aviation industry as their airlines offered cheap flights to a vast range of popular and alternative destinations. The programme follows O’Leary to on a trip to Poland, an EasyJet flight to Moscow and a group of lads travelling to Riga to sample the low-cost airline experience. But how much further can these companies grow? With rising costs, Stelios, now EasyJet’s biggest shareholder, is trying to halt its expansion, while O’Leary has just placed a massive order for new planes.

DOCUMENTARY: Eddie Stobart: Trucks and Trailers (Channe5 | 8pm to 9pm | Friday 21st June 2013)

Observational documentary series following one of the world’s biggest haulage firms. Tim Fox embarks on an epic biomass delivery, starting in Cumbria, going on to Northumberland and ending at a power station in Scotland. On the hunt for new trucks, Head of Fleet David Cox flies out to the Volvo factory in Sweden to size up the next generation of tractor units. Matt Ekins is handed a Friday run around London.

Town with Nicholas Crane: Enniskillen (BBC2/HD | 9pm to 10pm | 11th June 2013)

Nicholas Crane visits towns across the United Kingdom, revisiting the history of urban life in the British Isles. The most westerly town in the UK, Enniskillen is surrounded by beautiful lakes, is busy with independent shops, and attracts forward-thinking entrepreneurs. But its serene way of life is under threat from plans for underground gas exploitation.

Horizon: The Secret Life of the Cat (BBC2/HD | 9pm to 10pm | Thursday 13th June 2013)

Series exploring topical scientific issues. Horizon discovers what your cat really gets up to when it leaves the cat flap. In a groundbreaking experiment, 50 cats from a village in Surrey are tagged with GPS collars and their every movement is recorded, day and night, as they hunt in our backyards and patrol the garden fences and hedgerows. Cats are fitted with specially developed cat-cams which reveal their unique view of our world.

Australia with Simon Reeve (BBC2/HD | 9pm to 10pm | Sunday 2nd June 2013)

Simon travels down the east coast of Australia to the magnificent cities of Sydney and Melbourne. The final part of his journey begins in Surfer’s Paradise, near the city of Gold Coast. Known as the Las Vegas of Australia, the area has also become the organised crime capital of the country. Then, in the East Coast suburbs, Simon joins a vet and his team who rescue and treat injured koalas. In Sydney, Simon investigates attitudes to immigration among Australians. Finally, Simon takes to the air and witnesses the devastating bush fires ripping through the countryside as he travels to Melbourne – arriving just in time for Australia Day.

The People’s Coronation with David Dimbleby (BBC1/HD | 9pm to 10pm | Monday 3rd June 2013)

To mark the sixtieth anniversary of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, David Dimbleby tells the story of a ceremony which for centuries had been the preserve of the privileged. But in 1953, after initial resistance, the coronation would, for the first time, be televised and witnessed by millions. Dimbleby, then a teenager, was at the heart of the London festivities; he recalls how a Britain still in the grip of post-war rationing celebrated that momentous day.

Town with Nicholas Crane: Huddersfield (BBC2/HD | 9pm to 10pm | Tuesday 4th June 2013)

Nicholas Crane visits towns across the United Kingdom, revisiting the history of urban life in the British Isles. A Yorkshire mill town with a history of rugby, rebellion, and high-quality cloth, Huddersfield is a hidden gem.

Documentary series following every step of a ground-breaking ‘chain of survival’ for life-threatening injuries, designed to save hundreds of extra lives every year. The first regional ‘major trauma network’ to become fully operational opens its doors to Life Savers, to capture the complete story of patients’ journeys from the roadside, through life-saving surgery, to recovery. Early on a Saturday evening, a high-speed, head-on collision on a country road triggers the new system. The wreckage traps a family of three in one car and a single driver in another. Forty firefighters and six ambulances are already on scene, but they need the advanced medical skills of Dr Auden Langhelle and Neil Flowers to help release them. As the four patients travel along the chain of survival – from the emergency department, through the scanner, intensive care, surgery and beyond – it becomes clear the most critical is the mother from the family. She puts the new life-saving system to the ultimate test.

Australia with Simon Reeve (BBC2/HD | 9:30pm to 10:30pm | Sunday 26th May 2013)

Simon travels from Darwin in Australia’s Northern Territory or ‘Top End’, across to the remote Cape York Peninsula, and on to the Great Barrier Reef. Simon sets off from Kakadu, the largest national park in the world, where the wildlife is under threat from the march of millions of poisonous cane toads. He joins a team of toad-busters catching the amphibian invaders – originally introduced to the country to kill pests. In Robertson barracks Simon meets Australia’s best – and only – tank regiment. They will soon host 6,000 American Marines – evidence of Australia’s strategic importance in the Asia Pacific region. Simon also heads out on patrol with Norforce, a unique military unit who use ancient aboriginal knowledge to help them survive in the bush. On the Cape York peninsula Simon joins scientists catching deadly box jellyfish, whose venom could prove to have great medicinal value. And on the Great Barrier Reef he dives in search of the starfish destroying coral.

Hebrides: Islands on the Edge (BBC1 Scotland/HD | 9pm to 10pm | Monday 27th May 2013)

Ewan McGregor narrates a landmark nature series focusing on the wildlife struggling to survive on the Hebridean Islands. In the final programme, a look at how the residents of the Hebrides learned to live side-by-side with their wild neighbours. Skye Ferryman Donnie MacDonald reveals that business can prosper when passengers can be treated to some on board entertainment in the form of white-tailed eagles hunting alongside the boat. Plus, how Andrew Abrahams is attempting to turn the Island of Colonsay into a nature reserve for bees, how the peatlands of Lewis and Innes Henderson inspire artist Alice Starmore, and the Coll fisherman who regularly has to steer his boat through a 100-strong group of basking sharks.

Town with Nicholas Crane: Saffron Walden (BBC2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 28th May 2013)

Nicholas Crane visits towns across the United Kingdom, revisiting the history of urban life in the British Isles. An attractive market town within easy commuting distance of London, Saffron Walden has some of the best preserved medieval architecture in the country. However its heritage is now under threat. Nicholas Crane discovers what gave this town its unique name and how the UK’s housing crisis is affecting its future.

Waterloo Road (BBC1/HD | 8pm to 9pm | Wednesday 29th May 2013)

School-based drama. Steve-O continues to terrorise the students at Waterloo Road. Connor faces Steve-O’s wrath as he defaults on a loan payment and Dynasty pays the ultimate price with a shock decision. Elsewhere, Christine contemplates moving on from the school and Lula makes an unlikely ally.

Eddie Stobart: Trucks and Trailers (Channel 5 | 8pm to 9pm | Friday 31st May 2013)

Observational documentary series following one of the world’s biggest haulage firms. Transporting a huge replica plane causes a few headaches, while elsewhere heartstrings are tugged when a depot closes to relocate.

Sci-fi drama. The Doctor has a secret he will take to his grave. And it is discovered.

Australia with Simon Reeve (BBC2/HD | 9pm to 10pm | Sunday 19th May 2013)

Simon Reeve explores Australia. His adventure starts in the ‘red centre’ of the continent and onwards through South Australia via the extraordinary Indian Pacific Railway, until he reaches the west coast city of Perth. On the way, he joins an Aussie rancher in the parched outback and takes part in a spectacular camel round-up – part of an ongoing effort to stop the damaging spread of feral camels across the country. Simon also passes through Australia’s wine country and to the lucrative tuna fishing city of Port Lincoln, and he investigates the impact these trades are having on the environment. In Western Australia, he joins a 21st century gold rush – part of the resource boom that has made Australia one of the richest countries in the world. Finally in Perth, Simon discovers a full scale British invasion. Working in a mine or driving a lorry can bring a salary of a hundred thousand pounds a year, as evidenced when Simon meets a former binman from hull who is now living the dream.

Hebrides: Islands on the Edge (BBC1 Scotland/HD) | 9pm to 10pm | Monday 20th May 2013)

Ewan McGregor narrates a landmark nature series focusing on the wildlife struggling to survive on the Hebridean Islands. This edition focuses on the spectacular wildlife of the exposed Outer Hebrides. On the outlying islands, seabirds rush to feed their chicks while avoiding the murderous intentions of predatory skuas with a taste for young puffins. And on the low-lying Uists, acres of meadows burst into flower as summer finally arrives. But the year’s drought conditions find Atlantic salmon trapped in the sea pools and unable to move into the river systems.

Caroline Quentin’s National Parks (ITV/STV | 8pm to 9pm | Tuesday 21st May 2013)

In the final programme of the series, Caroline visits the New Forest, situated in the counties of Hampshire and Wiltshire. It is known for its ancient woods, open heaths, beautiful coastline and abundance of wild animals, although at just 218 square miles, it is one of the smallest of the 15 National Parks. In the heart of the National Park is the Pig Hotel, once a Royal hunting lodge. Gary Evely is a forager and it is his job to gather the food that grows wild in the forest so that it can be served in the restaurant just a few hours later. Caroline joins him to search and they stumble across an unusual beefsteak mushroom.

Waterloo Road (BBC1/HD | 8pm to 9pm | Thursday 23rd May 2013)

School-based drama. Sonya’s day from hell finds her being dumped, falling out with her sister and landing Rhiannon in hospital. Meanwhile, Lorraine and Nikki reach an impasse in their relationship. Steve-O tightens his evil grip on Connor and Kevin, and an ex-pupil makes a surprise return.

Observational documentary series following one of the world’s biggest haulage firms. In this episode, Craig has a foggy trip over the Pennines, Dave has a race against the clock in London, Andy has to take an epic detour and the car transporters prove their worth.

Hebrides: Islands on the Edge (BBC1 Scotland/HD) | 9pm to 10pm | Monday 13th May 2013)

Ewan McGregor narrates a landmark nature series focusing on the wildlife struggling to survive on the Hebridean Islands. Cameras follow white-tailed eagles, harbour seals, hares, pine martens and short-eared owls as they struggle to raise their families whilst dealing with the biggest storm ever to hit the islands in living memory. And as the wild weather passes, the seas warm to welcome the arrival of Scotland’s ocean juggernauts, basking sharks.

Caroline Quentin’s National Parks (ITV/STV) | 8pm to 9pm | Tuesday 14th May 2013)

Actress and presenter Caroline Quentin visits three of Britain’s most popular national parks. This episode finds her in Wales at the Snowdonia National Park. Famous for its spectacular scenery, it covers over 800 square miles. Snowdon is the tallest mountain in the principality and climbing and hiking are popular activities here – but this beautiful landscape can also be treacherous. Caroline volunteers to take part in a training exercise for the Mountain Rescue Dogs Association which is run entirely by volunteers, local people who will drop everything to help anyone who gets into trouble. The mountain is famous for its 50-mile narrow-gauge railway and every August the annual Race the Train contest attracts over 2,000 runners. Caroline is in her element as she starts the race and cheers on the competitors.

Keeping Britain Alive: The NHS in a Day (BBC2/HD | 9pm to 10pm | Tuesday 14th May 2013)

Documentary series capturing one day in the NHS, filmed by 100 camera crews across the UK, revealing the extraordinary range of demands placed on the country’s biggest institution. This episode takes a look at the country’s single biggest killer, heart disease. Every day 282 people will have a heart attack and 200 will die. In Manchester, a specialist team race to treat a steady stream of heart attack victims, some of whom have a 20 year history of heart disease. In Liverpool six-month-old Kyran undergoes open heart surgery to correct a defect first detected in the womb and in Yorkshire, air ambulance paramedics attempt to resuscitate an 80-year-old mechanic who has collapsed while working on a neighbour’s car.

School-based drama. Dynasty’s world is rocked when her ex-boyfriend is released from prison. He wants to make a fresh start with her, but she has eyes for someone else. Maggie is forced to return to work, whilst Audrey battles to keep her job and Tom makes a heartfelt decision.

The Tube: An Underground History (BBC2/HD | 9pm to 10pm | Thursday 16th May 2013)

In 2013 London Underground is 150 years old. Following on from BBC2’s The Tube series, this programme tells the story of the underground through the eyes of the people who work for it. Farringdon station supervisor Iain MacPherson reveals why his station – the original terminus – was constructed in the 1860s, and recalls the dark days of Kings Cross in the 1980s. Piccadilly line driver Dylan Glenister explains why every Edwardian station on his line has its own unique tiling pattern and how, in the 1930s, the construction of new stations expanded the borders of London. With privileged access to disused stations and rare archive footage, this is the tube’s hidden history, revealing why it was first built and how it has shaped London ever since.

In Scotland, new driver Paul ferries tender plants through the ice and snow, Mark takes a tanker full of fuel on a freezing night drive to the company’s Carlisle depot, at Southampton docks Gareth must load and deliver £1m worth of high-end cars without a scratch, and Brummie Ian gets hopelessly lost while delivering water to the Royal Opera House in London.
