Great Coastal Railway Journeys (BBC 2/HD | 6:30pm to 7:00pm | Monday 29th May 2023)

Middlesbrough to Boulby. Series 2, episode 6. Michael Portillo joins the hunt for dark matter in the deepest mine in Britain in Boulby, North Yorkshire, then visits Middlesbrough’s Transporter Bridge, which offers high views over the Tees estuary and the Cleveland Hills. At Saltholme, Michael joins the RSPB in a hide to observe a visiting bird of prey.

From Hull, Michael hitches a ride on a fine-looking barge heading to Goole on a network of canals. At Spurn Point, Michael hears how along this coast an ingenious 19th-century RNLI invention saved many lives.

Grimsby to Humberston Fitties. Series 2, episode 10. Michael Portillo has reached Lincolnshire, where his coastal railway journey from Middlesbrough ends. In Grimsby Town, he investigates a new stage in the town’s history – as a maintenance base for some of the largest wind farms in the world. In neighbouring Cleethorpes, Michael rides on the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway, pulled by a miniature steam locomotive. Later, Michael makes for a curious and wild stretch of coastline at Humberston.

Isle of Man. Series 5, episode 4. The comedian explores the Isle of Man, and discovers an island of beautiful landscapes, friendly people and exciting discoveries. In this former Viking stronghold, she meets a prolific treasure hunter before joining the crew of a Viking longboat for a trip around the harbour.

Douglas to Port Erin. Series 2, episode 1. Michael Portillo returns to travel by train to more places around the British Isles, beginning by heading to the self-governing Isle of Man – a paradise for rail lovers. His first stop on the Manx Electric Railway is the capital of Douglas, where he reveals the island’s parliament the Tynwald is older than Westminster, before the Isle of Man Steam Railway takes him down the east coast to Castletown, from where he heads to the Norse Castle Rusheword.

Grand Tours of Scotland’s Rivers (BBC 2/HD | 7:00pm to 7:30pm | Monday 22nd May 2023)

A River of Invention. Series 1, episode 4. Paul Murton explores the history of the River Nith in the south-west, from its source in a remote forest to the shining sands of the Solway Firth. Heading downstream, he hears the story of the Knockshinnoch mining disaster – how 116 men were saved from entombment after a massive earth collapse. He also learns about the first man to make a bicycle with pedals, heads to the riverside home of Robbie Burns and finds out how a Dumfries man helped Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.

Liverpool to Blackpool. Series 2, episode 2. Michael Portillo begins this leg of his journey at Liverpool’s historic waterfront, where he visits the International Slavery Museum at Royal Albert Dock, before heading underground to discover one of the most important and secret rooms of the Second World War, the Royal Navy’s Western Approaches Headquarters. His next stop is Crosby on the Merseyside coastline in Sefton, before making his way north to Blackpool, the last stop on this leg of his journey.

Ulverston to Ravenglass. Series 2, episode 4. At Barrow-in-Furness, Michael investigates the mountains of scrap left behind as iron ore was turned into ships, trains and railway tracks, and discovers researchers are exploring how slagbanks could contribute to reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide.

The Eurovision Song Contest (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 12:00am | Saturday 13th May 2023)

Final. Series 2022. Graham Norton, Hannah Waddingham, Alesha Dixon and Julia Sanina present the 67th annual song competition from Liverpool, with singer-songwriter Mae Muller representing the UK with I Wrote a Song. The show also features performances from last year’s first and second place acts, Ukraine’s Kalush Orchestra and the UK’s Sam Ryder, as well as a celebration of the host city’s incredible contribution to the world of pop music featuring six past Eurovision winners – including Liverpool’s own Sonia. Graham also shares commentary duties with Mel Giedroyc.

Grand Tours of Scotland’s Rivers (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 8:30pm | Monday 15th May 2023)

A Bountiful River. Series 1, episode 3. Paul Murton explores the lower reaches of the Spey, famous for its forests, whisky distilleries and salmon as it flows north towards the coast. On the way Paul hears tales of loggers who floated timber down the river from the 17th century onwards. He also takes to the water in a canoe and discovers the rare and endangered freshwater mussels that were once harvested for their precious pearls, which adorn royal crowns.

John, Peter and Paul set off from Whitby in their first vehicle of the day, a 1937 open-topped steam lorry, but when it breaks down, the trio have to hitch a ride to Beamish, the living history museum. From Beamish they head to the oldest railway line in the world, before hopping on a steam launch on the River Tyne. With just 75 miles to go and their journey coming to an end, they jump in their final steam vehicle and set off for the Scottish border.

Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Series 1, episode 1. The actor and writer is magically transported back in time to chart the 180-million-year story of the prehistoric creatures, beginning by going back 155 million years to the Jurassic period. He explores the conifer forests and fern prairies that were their home, encountering a monstrous plant-eating diplodocus and deadly predator the allosaurus. Expert Susie Maidment arrives to decode these dinosaurs’ remarkable behaviour, including the diplodocus’s acrobatic ability to rear up on its hind legs and the allosaurus’s terrifying attack strategy.

Everyone is looking forward to Trixie and Matthew’s wedding and a bonny baby competition brings the community together. It’s not all good news, however, as the team learn about a pregnant woman and her family living in a cramped caravan, while a worrying disease outbreak directly impacts the residents of Nonnatus House.

Claudia Winkleman searches for passionate pianists at public pianos in train stations across the UK. Series 3, episode 7. Following Neville’s arrest on suspicion of killing David Cartwright, DI Karen Flitcroft from the Department of Policing Standards arrives to investigate. CCTV footage shows an agitated Neville visiting the victim shortly before he was found dead, which as far as Flitcroft is concerned proves his guilt – so she advises the team members that if they are convinced of their inspector’s innocence, they must prove it quickly.

Hearts of Darkness (Part 1/2). The team are called to a devastating train crash, and work with the police and counter terrorism to piece together what happened.
