Derby to Hinckley. Series 14, episode 11. Michael Portillo begins a journey from the Midlands to the West Country, beginning in Derby, where he visits the city’s famous 19th-century railway works. In Leicester he looks back to the early 1970s, when around 10,000 Asians arrived in the city after being expelled from Uganda by the dictator Idi Amin. He also hears how meat rationing during the Second World War led to the birth of Walkers crisps, still produced in the city.

Coventry to Leamington Spa. Series 14, episode 12. Michael Portillo’s railway journey through the Midlands and West Country takes him to Coventry, where he recalls the destruction by the German Luftwaffe of the city’s gothic cathedral in November 1940. He visits the factory of the London Electric Vehicle Company, manufacturers of the iconic London taxi, and then heads south to Royal Leamington Spa and the national centre for the Guide Dogs for the Blind.

It falls to panellists Judi Love, Richard Madeley, Harry Hill and MIST to sort out the facts from the fiction.

British Planes That Won the War with Rob Bell (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 1st July 2022)

The presenter reveals how the Lancaster bomber played a crucial role in the outcome of the Second World War. For the first time, Allied forces could take the fight to the enemy. The design for the new Lancaster bomber represented a major capability breakthrough for the Allies. Its four powerful Merlin engines allowed it to carry the largest bombs used by the RAF.

The property-based guessing game sees four people all claiming to be Stephen Babatunde. The real homeowner and three imposter Stephens show cameras around his three-bedroom terraced house and reveal Stephen has a famous neighbour – none other than Susan Boyle (or Su-Bo to her friends). The real Stephen owns a lime green chaise lounge, occasionally indulges in a spot of tennis and likes barbecues. The engineer reveals why the Spitfire became the most famous fighter aircraft that Britain has ever produced. The return of the documentary following the building of Crossrail, with the first of two part charting the race to fix the railway’s hi-tech software and systems so that the new line would be open in time for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. For more than 10 years, cameras have followed the engineers, technicians and transport staff under pressure to deliver their section of the project, including construction fixes in the tunnels, safety checks of the stations and the testing of the complex, bug-ridden train software, all in a bid to make it safe for passengers.

Our Falklands War (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:30pm | Sunday 12th June 2022) ** NEW **

The experiences of 10 men who fought in the conflict, as they revisit some of the most dramatic, impactful, bloody and life-changing moments of the war and how they have come to terms with them since. The landing of British troops on the Falklands Islands on May 21, 1982, marked the beginning of a cold and bloody 25-day land war, and the stories of these men takes taking in the Battle of Goose Green, the catastrophic attack on British ship the Sir Galahad and the final night of fighting that led to the Argentine surrender.

DIY SOS (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 14th June 2022)

Nick Knowles and the team are in the Gloucestershire village of Chorlton Kings, where former car mechanic Peter needs help building an extension to the family house for his wife Sarah and daughter Suzanne, who both have a long-term genetic disorder that affects muscle function. Peter also looks after his elder brother Steve. Peter started the work to adapt to everyone’s growing needs but the pressure of looking after the family and completing the work has proved too much, and now his own health has taken a turn for the worse.
