Amy confronts one of the crew with her discoveries about their deception, but with her mental health suffering, questions are asked about her fitness to investigate. On land, Kirsten refuses to bow to pressure from the authorities and has concerns that they are orchestrating a cover up. As she closes in on the killer, their capture reveals the grave threat that the vessel faces.

Part one of two. A swimming instructor is found murdered in her flat, and trace evidence found at the scene implicates her ex-boyfriend – who is a former police officer. The investigation is the first case for a new recruit to the team, whose eagerness to impress causes friction with his new colleagues, while Jack finds himself forced to reckon with secrets from his own hidden past.

Fever Pitch: The Rise of the Premier League (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 13th September 2021)

A look at the title race between big-spending Blackburn Rovers and Manchester United in the 1994-95 season, assessing the impact of Eric Cantona’s ban for attacking a Crystal Palace supporter who had verbally abused him. The Frenchman claimed he was provoked by a racist slur, but his actions caused national outrage and the threat of a prison term loomed.

Submarine: Life Under the Waves (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 13th September 2021)

Part one of two. Life on board nuclear submarine HMS Trenchant on its four-month tour of duty to the mid-Atlantic, uncovering the reality of life at sea. Her crew prepare the submarine to leave port for the first time in six months, with enough food coming on board to last for up to 120 days underwater. Their mission is to travel to the mid-Atlantic to protect a British submarine that’s carrying Trident nuclear missiles.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 14th September 2021)

The crew at Tower, on the River Thames in London, is the busiest of all the lifeboat stations, averaging more than 500 shouts a year and aiming to launch to any emergency in under 90 seconds. When a call comes in about a man in the water near the Thames Barrier, they reach him with just moments to spare. In Fleetwood, on the Lancashire coast, a desperate 999 call alerts the crew to a bait digger – out looking for worms on the sand flats – who has been caught out by the incoming spring tide and is in danger of being submerged and swept out to sea.

Silent Witness (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 14th September 2021)

Part two of two. Having traced Laura’s last movements to a suburban house, the team struggles to identify the bodies buried in the garden. With a prowler seemingly on the loose, DI Meredith continues to suspect her former colleague. Meanwhile, Cara is furious when she finds out why Ryan is in prison, forcing Jack to choose between his brother and the truth.

Changing Rooms (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 15th September 2021)

Anna Richardson and the interior designers are in Fareham on the south coast to help another couple of neighbours transform each other’s houses. Project manager Keith and operations manager Kath have not touched their lifeless living room since moving in five years ago, while intensive care nurse Kerry and firefighter Sophie have a passion for superheroes, and want their bland loft bedroom to become a space that oozes personality and colour.

Grand Designs (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 15th September 2021)

Kevin McCloud meets architect Iain and his wife Jenny, who intend to build an enormous black minimalist house right in the middle of a 19th-century Scottish country estate. Their grand vision also involves connecting the new rectangular block to a dilapidated gardener’s bothy – and the neighbours are watching.

Coastal Devon & Cornwall with Michael Portillo (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 15th September 2021)

Michael heads for his final stretch in Cornwall, and takes in a coastline of hidden coves, a stunning sub-tropical garden and smugglers’ creeks, immortalised by Daphne du Maurier in her novel Frenchman’s Creek. Beginning at the working fishing village of Coverack, he detours inland to visit a family-run dairy farm that produces clotted cream and more than 40 flavours of ice cream from milk produced by their Jersey cows.

A trip back home to Glasgow presents James Herriot with a dilemma that will mean choosing between the people he loves when he is offered a position at his old mentor’s forward-thinking practice. Return of the drama about a veterinary practice in the Yorkshire Dales. Starring Nicholas Ralph and Samuel West.

The Cotswolds with Pam Ayres (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 17th September 2021) ** NEW SERIES **

The poet sets off on a journey around the region that takes in parts of Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Wiltshire and Worcestershire, beginning in the picturesque village of Bourton-on-the-Water. Pam soaks up the scenery that attracts thousands of tourists every year – along with a Cotswold cream tea – before visiting Andy Wallington’s antique shop, followed by a world-famous perfumery that’s made scents for the Queen. Pam also visits Blur bassist Alex James at his farm to discover why he swapped London for country life.

Featuring Italian ruins immortalised by Hollywood, a crumbling Chilean city with two lives and a brutalist Scottish relic whose prayers went unanswered.

Rob Bell heads nine miles out into the English Channel to see why building the world’s first rock lighthouse was such a monumental achievement. Nikki deals with disturbing memories when she and Jack visit a high-security prison to investigate the suspicious death of an inmate. Nikki becomes increasingly convinced that Scott is their prime suspect, but Jack worries she is not following the evidence.

The formation and success of the top-flight division after breaking away from the rest of the English Football League in 1992 and the selling of the live TV rights to Sky. Featuring interviews with Paul Merson, Martin Edwards, Dave Hill, Vinnie Jones and Les Ferdinand.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 7th September 2021)

The lifeboat volunteers pluck a fallen climber out of the sea in Wales and is within seconds of falling unconscious. Meanwhile in Scotland, a team rescue a 170-ton fishing boat that is perilously close to the rocks in gale force winds, and in Minehead, three kayakers are swept out to sea as darkness falls.

After a surprising breakthrough in Jay’s case, Nikki struggles to accept that Scott may not be responsible. Meanwhile, DI Mason asks Jack and Nikki to investigate the death of someone close to the case. What at first appears to be a house fire, Jack confirms was an arson attack, and Nikki discovers that the victim was murdered before the fire was set. The team struggles to find a connection to Jay’s case, but when crucial evidence is retrieved from the scene, attention returns to the prison.

Changing Rooms (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 8th September 2021)

Two sets of neighbours make over each other’s rooms in Barnstable, North Devon. Dog groomer Sarah, who’s enlisted retired mum Lynne to help out, has a cramped cluttered bedroom lacking in storage. She dreams of a light and breezy beach style, but will her neighbours Tom and Richard deliver the relaxing room Sarah dreams of? And in return, will Sarah transform Tom and Richard’s unloved dining room from dumping ground to a space they want to spend time in? Or will Sarah’s love of sparkly unicorns destroy a long-standing friendship?

Coastal Devon & Cornwall with Michael Portillo (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 8th September 2021)

Michael explores the South West Coast Path, following the western shore of Cornwall’s biggest natural harbour, Mount’s Bay – a sweeping, horseshoe-shaped shoreline that includes some of Cornwall’s most historic fishing ports. His trek begins at Cribba Head, just outside the tiny fishing community of Penberth Cove, before visiting the historic fishing harbour of Mousehole.

Kevin McCloud meets master carpenter Olaf, who is facing the biggest challenge of his career – creating an oasis for himself and partner Fritha on a small slice of land in West Sussex, which happens to be surrounded by a mainline railway and a busy A-road. Not only that, but half of the plot can’t even be built on due an underground mains sewer. All they’re left with is a very small triangle on which to build their future life together. With £190,000 in the bank, Olaf and Fritha must use all the ingenuity they can muster to make their triangular three-bedroom house come to life.

Ambulance (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 9th September 2021)

North West Ambulance Service calls up military personnel to help care for the public effectively as the pandemic takes its toll. The new recruits are put through three days of intensive training before they can join the paramedics working on the frontline. Once training is complete they should be able to respond to lower category calls, which account for 20 per cent of the workload. Meanwhile, in control call handers are currently answering a new 999 call every 20 seconds. With staff sickness taking its toll on the workforce, agency staff are drafted in to help. Narrated by Christopher Eccleston.

Motorhoming with Merton & Webster (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 10th September 2021)

Paul and Suki visit Norfolk for the final leg of their UK tour. Their first stop-off is Great Yarmouth’s quieter neighbour, Gorleston-on-Sea. With its three miles of award-winning golden sandy beach, it retains its traditional Victorian seaside holiday vibe – including a Punch and Judy show. The duo discover puppetry’s satirical roots before doing their own show.

The host looks back on his career with his son and producer Mike, and examines how his talk show went from being a temporary 10-week filler programme to an iconic Saturday night staple. He discusses his first celebrity interview, with Mick Jagger, how the management of movie stars’ public images shifted over the years, and reflects on the loss of the show’s entire first series – including an appearance by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The programme also looks back on some of the most memorable moments from the show, including his multiple encounters with Billy Connolly and Muhammad Ali.

A crew member is found dead under suspicious circumstances aboard a nuclear submarine. However, the vessel is unable to return to port due to its status as part of the UK’s nuclear deterrent, so a police inspector is sent on board to investigate. Despite an initial diagnosis of accidental overdose, she suspects foul play, but finds the crew closing ranks against her. Starring Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie.

The submarine is left exposed by a reactor shutdown, and the crew races to repair the fault. Kirsten uncovers a feud on board the Vigil, leading Amy to question whether her investigation has been deliberately obstructed. A hard-won breakthrough leads Amy to believe she finally has the killer in her sights, only for surprising new evidence to cast doubt on her theory. On land, Kirsten’s investigation leads to tragedy.

On Cornwall’s Perranporth beach, a team of RNLI lifeguards battle to save a mother and her son who are caught in a rip current. Meanwhile in Swanage, the crew respond to multiple 999 calls from a man who has fallen over 100 feet from the top of a local landmark, and the Chiswick and Teddington crews face an unusual challenge on the Thames.

9/11: Inside the President’s War Room (BBC 1/HD | 8:30pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 31st August 2021)

Almost 20 years since September 11, this feature-length documentary follows President George W Bush and his staff as they dealt with the large-scale terrorist attack, in which four commercial aircraft were used as missiles on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. The events of that day led to two decades of conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq. As America and its allies now withdraw from Afghanistan and the Taliban resume control, this is the story of how it all began. The film features testimony from George W Bush himself, as well as staff members Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell.

Anna Richardson and the team are in Leeds, West Yorkshire, to help another pair of neighbours make over each other’s rooms. Former teacher Pauline, assisted by daughter Lilly, wants her purple floor-to-ceiling front room to be even more vibrant. Next door, self-proclaimed cat lady Amanda – with the help of daughter Rachel – is hoping her uninspiring grey living room will be transformed into a Scandinavian-style haven for her and her feline friends. All they need is a little trust in each other and the individual visions of Changing Rooms legend Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, and design duo Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead.

Kevin McCloud visits a couple planning to build a home that looks like a work of art overlooking a valley in south Devon. Joe and Claire’s new home will be a giant sculpture inspired by the local landscape, 70 metres long and featuring 34 enormous angled zinc shards jutting out in all directions. It will also be complicated to build and equally as expensive. And although Joe is wealthy, ambitious and fearless, his team quickly come up against problems and the budget virtually doubles the first walls go up. Is his dream home in danger of become a nightmare?

Coastal Devon & Cornwall with Michael Portillo (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 1st September 2021)

The presenter explores the rugged North Cornish coast, beginning in Widemouth Bay, a gigantic stretch of coastline with ancient links to the Celtic nations of Wales and Brittany. Battling a storm blowing in from the Atlantic, Michael heads south and takes shelter in a magical and ancient woodland, before spending the night at the vicarage where novelist Thomas Hardy stayed in 1870, and penned a poem named after a local landmark, Beeny Cliff.

Paramedic Linda and mental health nurse Emma respond to patients in mental health crisis across Liverpool. Their work in the community aims to reduce the number of mental health hospital admissions, and the first call of the morning is a patient struggling with depression and bipolar. As the shift winds into the afternoon, a call from the police requesting a welfare check takes priority for Linda and Emma. There are concerns for the patient, who is an asylum seeker who appears to be struggling with his mental health, caused by isolation.

Motorhoming with Merton & Webster (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 3rd September 2021)

Paul and Suki are in the Peak District on their UK staycation adventure in their trusty motorhome. The first morning finds them in a campsite north of Bakewell, and they debate who should empty the on-board loo. Later, Suki reveals they are swapping four wheels for two after hiring bikes on the nearby Monsal Trail, a disused former railway line.

An ominous tower in the forests of Croatia, a New York City complex that broke the mould, and a grand facility guarding the London riverbanks.

Cameras explore the Great Western Railway to experience a journey of a bygone age. The magnificent Pullman service continues to offer passengers a Silver service restaurant menu as it whisks passengers to coastal resorts that were established in the Victorian era. Queen Victoria was a driving force behind the mass appeal of rail travel that developed in the 19th century. There’s a look around Victoria’s royal train, which has been preserved in all its finery.

A Lake District Farm Shop (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Saturday 10th July 2021)

Documentary following a family-run shop in the Lake District and the local people who produce its goods. The first episode features a ramen chef who hopes the shop’s managers will stock his new recipe. A baker looks to the landscape for inspiration in making bread, and a butcher heads to the fells to hand-pick the Herdwick Lambs to be sold on his counter.

MOTD: Euro 2020 Live (BBC 1/HD/UHD | 7:00pm to 10:35pm | Sunday 11th July 2021) ** COME ON ENGLAND **

Italy v England (Kick-off 8.00pm). Gary Lineker presents coverage of the final, as the champions are crowned at Wembley Stadium. After a nervy semi-final appearance that saw them overcome a deficit for the first time during the tournament, Gareth Southgate’s England players secured their place in the final of a major competition for just the second time in history. Their opponents have a rich pedigree, having won the World Cup four times and the European Championships once, and come into this match on the back of a 32-game unbeaten run. With analysis from Alan Shearer, Rio Ferdinand and Jurgen Klinsmann.

Kevin McCloud revisits professional deep-sea diver Adrian Corrigall and his wife Megan, who planned to build their new family home in rural East Sussex almost entirely out of concrete, with construction involving cutting-edge technologies conceived in Switzerland and never used to build a house before. With both the schedule and the budget under strain, Adrian was forced to resume work as a North Sea diver, leaving Megan juggling this messy and challenging build, all the while looking after three young children. By 2018, water leaks were still to be addressed, the majority of the spaces were raw and unfinished, and the family were still a long way away from moving into their concrete dream. Two and a half years later, with the house now fully complete, Kevin returns to see what living in a cutting-edge concrete bunker is really like.

Our NHS: A Hidden History (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 15th July 2021)

David Olusoga explores the hidden history of the nurses, doctors and health workers who, for more than 70 years, have been arriving from overseas to serve in the NHS. Without them the NHS would have been in danger of collapse – not least during the current Covid-19 crisis. From its origins, the story of this beloved institution has been intertwined with one of the most divisive social and political issue of the age – immigration – and those who came to work in the NHS have found themselves fighting battles of hostility they neither sought nor expected. However, as Olusoga reveals, their stories say as much about perseverance, dedication and the overcoming of obstacles as they do about discrimination and prejudice.

Wonderful Wales with Michael Ball (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 16th July 2021)

The singer and broadcaster heads to mid Wales, making his way to the north of the country. His first stop is a familiar seaside town he is extremely fond of – Aberystwyth. This is where he did his first paid acting job, and Michael meets a friendly face from his summer performing in Godspell. Next, he drops in for lunch with the spectacular red kites of Mid Wales. Michael then checks in to restaurant Ynyshir on the Dyfi estuary for a Michelin-starred experience hosted by multi-award-winning chef Gareth Ward.

Tim Dunn is in Windsor to find out how two rail companies fought to be first to get to Queen Victoria. He also explores the stunning Connel Bridge in the Scottish Highlands.

Kevin McCloud follows an ambitious build in Cornwall, as Leigh and Richard transform a derelict 17th century flour mill into a contemporary, three-bedroom home. They employ traditional craftsmen to start work on restoring the exterior, but it’s not long before the true scale of the damage to the structure is revealed, and as the costs rise, they are forced to take more of the work themselves.

Adrian Dunbar’s Coastal Ireland (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 4th February 2021)

Actor Adrian Dunbar reconnects with his roots as he travels around the wild and rugged Irish coast. In the first of two programmes he visits the astonishing Mizen bridge, suspended 45 metres above sea level, and heads to Co Cork, where old friend Darina Allen makes him lunch at Ballymaloe House. He also fulfils a lifelong ambition to make the treacherous sea crossing to Skellig Islands, where the ruins of an ancient monastic settlement are perched 600 feet above sea.

Death in Paradise (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 4th February 2021)

When renowned concert pianist Pasha Verdinikov is shot dead during an apparent burglary, Neville is quick to conclude that the scene was staged and Pasha was murdered. But the four people under suspicion – the victim’s family and domestic workers – all have seemingly solid alibis. However, matters are complicated when the discovery of new evidence links the crime to a case from 20 years ago. First of a two-part story, starring Ralf Little and Josephine Jobert.

Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 5th February 2021)

The comedian aboard her vintage camper van, explores the Pembroke coast in Wales. She begins her 130-mile road trip just north of Pembrokeshire near the town of Cardigan, then follows the coastline south to Carmarthenshire, ending her trip at Pendine Sands. Her first visit is to the Teifi River where she’s invited to paddle an unusually small boat called a coracle, then it’s on to the Blue Lagoon for a spot of cliff jumping. Next, Susan samples Welsh seaweed delicacy laverbread at Broadhaven Beach, before visiting the home of the celebrated Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.

Death in Paradise (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 5th February 2021)

The conclusion of a two-part story. Neville must solve a mystery from the past that unlocks the truth of who murdered renowned concert pianist Pasha Verdinikov and why. Help is at hand though, thanks to a former sergeant. Ralf Little stars, with Don Warrington, Josephine Jobert and Sara Martins.

It’s a Sin (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 5th February 2021) ** PICK OF THE WEEK **

While making their way in the world, the terror the friends been avoiding suddenly strikes at their heart in the most unexpected manner. Reeling from the news, everyone has to rally round. And when a hospital takes shocking action, the flatmates must fight like never before. Russell T Davies drama, set in the 1980s during the Aids crisis, starring Olly Alexander, Neil Patrick Harris and Stephen Fry.

Kevin McCloud meets energy conservationist Andrew, who has decided to build a radical, self-heating home for his family – the first of its kind in the UK. However, this pioneering construction seems an exercise in trial and error from the start, and what began as a seemingly simple, pure concept becomes a complicated feat of engineering.

The actor makes an early start for the remaining 46 miles of his trek along Hadrian’s Wall, crossing the border from Northumbria to Cumbria at Gilslan, where he finds playful graffiti from the Romans. Moving on, he learns how to link a Cumbrian sausage, takes to the skies for a bird’s-eye view of Carlisle and finally reaches the end of his journey at Bowness-on-Solway.

Tony goes behind the scenes at the iconic Cutty Sark in Greenwich, meeting with the passionate team who care for this historical tourist attraction. Later, Tony visits a metal recycling yard on the banks of the river, before heading out of London to the Hoo peninsula in Kent, where he discovers a rich history of military defence in one small fort.

It seems money doesn’t buy happiness when lottery winner Cherry is found dead at her luxurious villa, much to the horror of her husband and their visiting friends. As usual, Neville and the team are presented with a real head-scratcher when it turns out no one was in the house at the time – and the mystery deepens when the victim’s body apparently vanishes into thin air. Meanwhile, JP is training unruly new officer Marlon, aware that his wife Rosey is due to give birth at any time. Kelvin Fletcher, Jason Manford and Faye McKeever guest star.

The actor travels from Chollerford to Walltown Crags, and learns more about how the Romans took care of themselves so far from home. He samples natural cuisine and checks out the spa at Chesters Fort, before paying a visit to the latrines of Housesteads Fort, which were once the envy of an empire. He goes on to pit his fishing abilities against an angling rival, gladiator-style, before climbing Steel Rigg to reach the route’s highest summit.

The comedian ventures east of the Pennines on a 126-mile journey that begins at the North Yorkshire village of Runswick Bay, where she goes hunting for a rare gemstone called Whitby Jet. Susan samples the local cod and chips before exploring the gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey – famed for inspiring some of the most dramatic scenes in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. After a spell at Mother Shipton’s Cave – the oldest tourist attraction in England – she meets up with a group whose members reconstruct Roman gladiatorial battles in York. Finally, Susan ventures to Malham Cove, a huge curving amphitheatre-shaped cliff.

Russell T Davies’ drama, set in the 1980s during the Aids crisis, following the lives of a group of young gay men. In London, Roscoe walks out of parents’ home, while Colin arrives from Wales to start a new career on Savile Row. The three men meet, and along with fellow student Ash and best friend Jill form a gang and move into a flat, christened the Pink Palace. However, a distant threat on the horizon means that life in the 1980s might be all too precious. Olly Alexander, Omari Douglas and Callum Scott Howells star.

The World’s Most Scenic Railway Journeys (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 22nd January 2021)

Luxury heritage train The Northern Belle, aka steam locomotive 6201 Princess Elizabeth, travels through England’s rural north west. Beginning in Preston, the passengers of its stylish 1930s Pullman carriages are soon whisked up through Cumbria and the spectacular landscapes of the Lake District. The train continues on to historic Carlisle, the site of a world-class medieval cathedral and home to supposedly England’s most haunted station. It then joins the Settle to Carlisle line, considered one of the most scenic railway routes in the world.

A teenage paddleboarder is being swept out to sea off the coast of north Wales, so the crew of the Abersoch lifeboat race to reach him before he is lost for ever. The crew of the Lizard lifeboat station face two missions, as they are called out to a cargo ship taking on water and in danger of sinking with its crew still on board, followed by a small yacht being battered by a storm in the Atlantic.

Iain Robertson Rambles (BBC Scotland/HD & BBC iPlayer only | Thursday 14th January 2021)

In the second of two programmes, actor Iain Robertson treks the last 52 miles of the West Highland Way, joined by some familiar faces along the way. He and his River City co-star Lesley Hart begin with a six-mile walk from Crianlarich to Tyndrum, before he ventures into the mist-swirling valley of Glencoe, and a rained-off climb sees him reunited with Small Faces actor Steven Duffy for an unscheduled day trip. He then makes it across the Devil’s Staircase and visits the town of Kinlochleven, where his father grew up, before finally descending into Fort William and facing Ben Nevis.

An archaeologist is poisoned during a dig, and with only two suspects and a quick confession, it looks like this is going to be an open-and-shut case. However, it turns out the archaeologists were not alone – and the team realise they have little to no evidence. Meanwhile, Neville and Florence realise they might get along better than they originally thought, although the DI’s attempts to embrace island life do not find favour with the Commissioner.

Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 15th January 2021)

The comedian aboard her vintage camper van, explores the mountainous region of north-west England and the Lake District. She begins her 142-mile journey just south of Penrith, travelling down through the lakes, before heading west to finish near Keswick. Along the way she meets the people and visits the places that make this most scenic part of Britain unique. On Ullswater, Susan gets a chance to take charge of the oldest working passenger vessel in the world, the Lady of the Lake. Then she hears of Beatrix Potter’s love of the region before heading the spooky Muncaster Castle.

A journey through Sicily that takes in seven Unesco World Heritage sites, with the first stop being a visit to a castle whose baron was inspired by Hampton Court. There’s a meeting in Modica with Sicily’s most famous chocolatier, a trip on the unique railway that travels around Etna, and a visit to Ragusa, a baroque-inspired city famous for its beauty and for its spiral railway that travels within a mountain.

Kevin McCloud follows more of Britain’s most ambitious self-building projects, as intrepid individuals attempt to design and construct the home of their dreams. In this first edition, Kevin meets former army captain Justin, who has spent £1.8million on an abandoned neo-Gothic cemetery keeper’s lodge and adjoining ex-council toilet block in south-west London. Justin’s vision is to restore the lodge but demolish the ugly toilet blocks and replace them with an enormous luxury ground-floor extension, with an added moat and a giant basement with a swimming pool – all just metres from the nearest grave.

The actor and presenter discovers what makes the Thames one of the greatest rivers in the world. This time, Tony gains access to one of the most iconic landmarks to sit on – or over – the River Thames, the Battersea Power Station. He goes inside the famous Control Room A to see how it is being restored and even has a go at replacing one of the laylights in the ceiling. Upstream in Berkshire, he visits the Cliveden House, before learning more about a unique art installation project on the river.

The return of an experienced sergeant to the island could be just what Neville needs to crack the case.

She stumbles across one of the area’s more unique attractions, including The Gnome Reserve, where she meets a local who has a collection of more than 1,000 gnomes, and finds out where the term ‘stickler’ comes from by taking part in the ancient sport of Cornish Wrestling, before ending her journey at the stunning coastal viewpoint of St Bedruthan Steps.

The World’s Most Scenic Railway Journeys (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 8th January 2021)

The West Highland Line is one of the world’s truly legendary train routes, crossing spectacular Scottish moors and mountains as it heads towards Skye. Starting in Glasgow, it glides towards Loch Lomond, the world’s largest inland stretch of water. It then sweeps north to enter the wild and windswept landscape of Rannoch Moor. After ascending to Corrour, Britain’s highest station, the journey passes Ben Nevis, the UK’s tallest mountain and then across the famous Glenfinnan viaduct. The coastal town of Mallaig is gateway to the Isle of Skye with its world-famous Highland cuisine and many breathtaking views.
