First half century cycle of 2020!

So pleased with myself, just done my first half century cycle of 2020! So in other words 50 miles! Not just 50 kilometres (31 miles), that most of Europe does! Now I really need to aim for 80 miles next! Then really, really hoping, I can get a 100 mile cycle in before the year is out!

You can check out the route at www.strava.com/activities/3833873559

Anyone up for cycling from York to the Tan Hill Inn?

After my last very big cycle adventure, which was cycling all the way from John O’ Groats to Land’s End, covering a distance of 990.30 miles over 16 days. Which was way, way back in 2009. Really think I’m long overdue another adventure.

Right now, my plain is to get a train up to York, then cycle from York to the Tan Hill Inn, which is the highest pub in Great Britain at 1732ft above sea level. A distance of around 70 miles, with an Elevation Gain of 4,509ft.

Then stay the night at the Tan Hill Inn! Then the following morning cycle to Settle, a distance of around 36 miles, with an Elevation Gain of 3,045ft. Where I could get the train back to Grantham.

That makes it sound very, very easy! Which of course, I know it will not be!

So what do you think of this idea? Please do let me know!

InterCity 125 passes Elton and Orston railway station

Today Mark T and myself went to Elton and Orston railway station, which is the least used station in Nottinghamshire. To watch the one of the Summer Saturday HST specials to Skegness.

Updated VeloViewer map : 6-July-2020

That’s me just updated the VeloViewer map. I’ve filled in a good number of new squares, since I last posted the map on 15th June 2020.

Map data between 1st January and 15th June 2020.

Walked so many canals

I’ve walked so many canals in England over the last number of years! So far done the Erewash Canal, Grand Union Canal (main line), Grantham Canal, Northampton Arm (Grand Union Canal), Nottingham & Beeston Canal, Paddington Arm (Grand Union Canal) and Regent’s Canal.

Think so far, the Grand Union Canal (main line) has been my favourite! Mainly because, I can say I’ve walked the whole way from London to Birmingham.

Now in the process of walking the Kennet and Avon Canal and Leicester Line (Grand Union Canal).

The map below, shows all the canals and other walks, I’ve done since 6th October 2016. When I got my Garmin Vivoactive HR GPS smart watch.

Want to make a map like this? Then check out www.veloviewer.com.

Most miles (84.79) walked in a week!

WOW! Go me, that’s me just walked 84.79 miles in a single week! Which has recorded using a GPS watch and not worked out using steps! The most miles, I think I’ve ever done a single week!

During the week, I walked the whole of Grantham Canal and back again! Also made a start walking the Leicester Line of the Grand Union Canal.

Not got, so wet in a long time!

WOW! I got super wet during that cycle! It was sunny one second, then the next had thunder and lightning. It was that wet, the roads turned into rivers! But at least it give me a good reason, to try my new Samsung Galaxy S20 5G mobile phones camera, that I got last week! So far, well pleased with it!

Yes, I was still smiling even in the rain! Since I was out doing something that I love, plus it was warm rain which always helps! 🙂

Waltham transmitting station cycle

Always love cycling up close to the Waltham transmitting station. Since it’s 315 metres tall and can see it from miles and miles. Only really get an idea, of how tall it is, when standing very close to it!
