Doctor Who (BBC 1/HD | 7:00pm to 7:50pm | Sunday 4th November 2018)

Injured and stranded in the wilds of a far-flung galaxy, the Doctor, Yaz, Graham and Ryan must band together with a group of strangers to survive against one of the universe’s most deadly – and unusual – creatures.

Great Canal Journeys (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Sunday 4th November 2018)

Timothy West and Prunella Scales embark on their first Latin American adventure and head for Argentina. A few miles from Buenos Aires, lies a vast labyrinth of canals and rivers that meander ever deeper into the jungle. Hiring a traditional cargo boat, known as a chatta, Tim and Pru voyage into the remoter corners of the Paraná delta. ‘When you’re my age, a trip from Wandsworth to Putney on a 37 bus can seem quite an adventure,’ remarks Pru. ‘And here I am in South America on a tramp steamer, heading into the jungle – I mean I can’t believe it.’ Tim and Pru discover the Belle Epoque splendour of the jungle town of Tigre. They visit a remote enclave of Anglo Argentines, who still drink G and T and toast the Queen. They also learn about the ‘dirty war’ of the 1970s. They marvel at the local flora and fauna and admire the hummingbirds, and perform Argentina’s national dance.

Paddington Station 24/7 (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 5th November 2018)

The bank holiday works schedule is disrupted when reports come in of a trespasser on the relief lines outside of London, forcing the cancellation of all trains leaving Paddington station. However, the total shutdown allows the engineers onto the track to renew large sections of the ageing rail infrastructure.

Lego Masters (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 6th November 2018)

Lego Masters returns – the show in which some of the most skilled brick fanatics do battle to be crowned Lego Master. This year Lego Masters is bigger than ever. From thousands of applications, eight of the best amateur brick-building duos in the British Isles prepare to plunge their skills, creativity and imaginations into a series of challenges, to claim the title of Lego Masters Champion 2018. Melvin Odoom hosts and is joined by scientist and engineer-at-heart Fran Scott to co-judge alongside Matthew Ashton, the LEGO Group’s Vice President of Design. In the first episode, the eight teams must construct a 1.3m-long bridge, with no prior planning, over which Melvin will be driving a weighted remote-controlled dumper truck. Which bridges will come crashing down to earth?

Grand Designs (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 7th November 2018)

Kevin McCloud embarks on a nationwide journey to examine some of the most cutting-edge contemporary homes, all of them in the running for the 2018 Royal Institute of British Architects House of the Year. In each episode, he exclusively reveals which houses the Riba judges have selected for the competition’s final shortlist. The last programme of the series will announce the winner of this prestigious prize. In this first episode, Kevin and his co-presenters architect Damion Burrows, and design expert Michelle Ogundehin, visit five extraordinary homes that dare to be different: a magnificent monolithic dark-rendered block in London; a controversial cutting-edge glass modernist building in Henley; a glorious north London townhouse filled with Nicaraguan mahogany; a beautiful bright red end-of-terrace property that stands out but also blends in; and a smart semi-detached home in Newcastle built by two neighbours working together.

The Great Model Railway Challenge (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 9th November 2018)

Reality contest as railway modellers compete to create miniature masterpieces against the clock. The final five teams compete on the theme A Journey Through Time, creating models based on the Cold War, the industrial revolution, 1950s West Country railways, the 2012 Olympics, and all the way into the future.

Portillo’s Hidden History of Britain (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 9th November 2018)

Documentary series. Michael Portillo explores abandoned locations. The officers of the London Road Fire Station stood guard over the people of Manchester for 80 years through war, civil unrest and serial killers.

Great Canal Journeys (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Sunday 28th October 2018)

Beginning on Britain’s first purpose-built canal, the Bridgewater, Tim and Pru embark on a voyage through canal history, as they explore the waterways of north west England. Heading from the suburbs of Manchester to the great canal port at Ellesmere, along the way they’ll discover how canals became the veins and arteries of the early industrial revolution, and helped to transform England’s green and pleasant land into the workshop of the world. At Worsley, Tim and Pru discover how in 1761, the building of the Bridgewater Canal, more than halved the price of coal in Manchester and launched a transport revolution. In Manchester, Tim and Pru discover a lesser known aspect of canal history when visiting Canal Street, which lies at the heart of the city’s LGBT+ community.

Paddington Station 24/7 (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 29th October 2018)

Swindon control discovers an intoxicated man running around the tracks, forcing them to shut the line. Engineers at Cowley Bridge near Exeter insert 24 huge culverts to ease flooding there. In Paddington, a drink-addled dentist is convinced he has left his bag on a train.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 30th October 2018)

The RNLI volunteers race to try and rescue a teenager being swept out to sea on an inflatable, two girls caught in a rip current and a woman who has fallen from a cliff in Cornwall.

A suspected terror incident requires a large-scale response and brings back memories of the Manchester Arena attack for the paramedics.

The Great Model Railway Challenge (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 2nd November 2018)

Reality contest as railway modellers compete to create miniature masterpieces against the clock. The Wakefield RMS, Aberdeen Model Railway Club and the Shunter Guys compete for a place in the final by creating railway layouts based on the theme ‘Waterworld’.

The Lakes with Paul Rose (BBC 2/HD | 8:30pm to 9:00pm | Friday 2nd November 2018)

Four-part series about the Lake District, the National Park that is now a World Heritage Site. Remote Eskdale is the final destination in explorer Paul Rose’s trek through the Lake District. This corner of the western Lakes is off the normal tourist track but it boasts England’s highest mountain. Before heading for the tough Lakeland summit of Scafell Pike, Paul meets the folk who run one of the country’s most scenic railways, he has a close encounter with a vulture, and gets to grips with the locals in a spot of Cumberland wrestling.

Portillo’s Hidden History of Britain (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 2nd November 2018)

Documentary series. Michael Portillo unlocks the doors to more extraordinary abandoned locations. A medical revolution was born at Cambridge that changed the face of Britain – literally.

Mediterranean with Simon Reeve (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Sunday 21st October 2018)

Simon Reeve embarks on the third leg of his epic four-part journey around the Mediterranean. He begins in Libya – a country torn apart by revolution, insurgents from the so-called Islamic State and western air strikes. Travelling west along North Africa’s Mediterranean coast, Simon journeys through Tunisia where he meets a man who is keeping Berber traditions alive by harnessing camel power to make olive oil and excavating rock by hand to build new Berber homes. From Tunisia, Simon boards the overnight ferry to Sicily. Here he meets three inspiring sisters who – despite constant intimidation – are making a defiant stand against the mafia.

Paddington Station 24/7 (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 22nd October 2018)

Documentary series about one of the UK’s busiest transport hubs and the western rail network it serves. Huge delays occur after a man is hit by a train at Southall, and more chaos occurs when the power out on track is accidentally switched off. Meanwhile, hundreds of train enthusiasts descend on Paddington to get a glimpse of the world-famous Flying Scotsman.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 23rd October 2018)

Documentary following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). As storm Ophelia hits the British Isles, on the south east coast of Ireland the Rosslare crew try to rescue a small yacht with three people on board. In Devon, the crew at Appledore race an incoming tide to try and reach a man stuck fast in quicksand, while on the north coast of Cornwall, the crew of St Agnes must battle through huge breaking waves to reach two young boys being swept out to sea in a deadly rip current.

Without Limits: Australia (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 24th October 2018)

Two-part observational documentary following a team of injured British and Australian veterans as they embark on an extraordinary near 1000-mile expedition across Western Australia’s remote Kimberley region. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcome the veterans at the Invictus Games in Sydney after their dramatic expedition across Western Australia.

Grand Designs (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 24th October 2018)

Professional deep-sea diver Adrian Corrigall is obsessed with concrete. He fell in love with this cold uncompromising material in the skateparks of Scotland. Now he’s convinced his wife Megan to agree to build their new family home in rural East Sussex almost entirely out of the stuff – both inside and out. No cladding, no carpets, no plaster or wallpaper – this will be as pure a concrete building as possible. Construction involves cutting-edge technologies conceived in Switzerland and never used to build a house before. The hope is these new mix recipes will overcome the historic negatives of concrete and keep costs down. However, the perils of being a pioneer soon become evident. With both schedule and budget under strain, Adrian is forced to resume work as a diver, servicing North Sea oil installations and taking him away for a month at a time. With Megan now left juggling the build, all the while looking after three young children, the concrete dream seems a long way off.

Documentary series focusing on the work of the North West Ambulance Service. Call handler Elly tackles an increasing volume of calls, and there are surprises for paramedics April and Clare.

Reality contest as railway modellers compete to create miniature masterpieces against the clock. The Fawley Fliers, The Diesel Dynamos and The Railway Children are the teams competing, and they each have to create a railway layout based on the creatively taxing theme ‘Fire and Ice’.

The Lakes with Paul Rose (BBC 2/HD | 8:30pm to 9:00pm | Friday 26th October 2018)

Four-part series about the Lake District, the National Park that is now a World Heritage Site. In this episode, Paul Rose heads to Coniston, where he enters a retro-cycling event on a penny farthing before joining the mountain bikers of Grizedale Forest. He relives the final moments of Donald Campbell in his attempt to break the world water-speed record on Coniston Water, and ends his trek by climbing Dow Crag, before ascending to one of the area’s best-known hills, The Old Man of Coniston.

Walking Britain’s Lost Railways (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 26th October 2018)

Rob Bell explores the lost landscapes and infrastructure of some of Britain’s former railway lines. Rob unearths the lost line from Ruabon to Barmouth, taking a memorable trip across the ‘Stream in the Sky’ on the breath-taking Pontcysyllte Aquaduct.

Along the way he realises the resilience of humanity, discovering hope in his darkest frozen moment. It is the end of an era, but the Doctor’s journey is only just beginning.

Call the Midwife (BBC 1/HD | 7:40pm to 9:00pm | Monday 25th December 2017)

Drama about a group of midwives in 1960s London, based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth. Boxing Day brings a large snowfall that covers the country. The adverse weather causes major disruption across Poplar as roads become blocked and pipes freeze. Trixie’s holiday with Christopher is cancelled due to the snow. Valerie helps an unmarried couple living in a caravan prepare for their baby. As the labour progresses, unforeseen complications knock Valerie’s confidence in her ability as a midwife. Tom is offered a new position in Birmingham, but it would mean him and Barbara leaving Poplar for at least six months. It’s all hands on deck to help during the weather crisis, so Shelagh comes back to work. Nurse Crane meets her match in Sergeant Woolf as he challenges her driving ability and Akela leadership.

Roads Less Travelled – The Heart of Scotland (BBC 2 Scotland & BBC iPlayer only | 7:00pm to 8:00pm | Wednesday 27th December 2017)

First of two Adventure Show specials in which Cameron McNeish journeys over 300 miles through some of Scotland’s most impressive wild places. Travelling on foot, by bike, by pack-raft and with his beloved camper van, Cameron begins his journey in the whisky country around Ben Rinnes before heading over the wild Dava Moor and into the Cairngorm mountains and glens that have shaped his life. He finishes this part of his journey in the remote splendour around Loch Rannoch, and along the way he meets scientists, historians and outdoor enthusiasts, and finds the only railway station in Scotland that hosts regular ceilidhs.

Roads Less Travelled – The Heart of Scotland (BBC 2 Scotland & BBC iPlayer only | 7:00pm to 8:00pm | Thursday 28th December 2017)

Second of two Adventure Show specials in which Cameron McNeish journeys over 300 miles through some of Scotland’s most impressive wild places. The second part of his journey takes him from the Falls of Bruar, south east to the magnificent Angus Glens before turning north to Deeside and finishing in the Cromdale Hills. During his travels he joins a descendent of the travelling folk, meets a collector of traditional songs and has first-hand experience of how illicit whisky stills once worked. He also meets two people whose lives have been changed by the outdoors.

In this personal documentary, Rupert Everett explores the changes in gay life in the 50 years since the decriminalisation of male homosexuality in England and Wales in 1967. He meets LGBT people from all walks of life, including former royal butler Paul Burrell, black gay rapper Jai’Rouge, actors from Hollyoaks, and Southend carpenter Steve, and visits the ‘lesbian capital of Britain’, Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire. So much has been gained in the long journey towards mainstream acceptance, but has something of the rebellious, outsider spirit of gay culture also been lost? Is Britain finally able to accept the full 50 shades of gay?

The Yorkshire Dales and the Lakes (more4 | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 4th July 2017)

This new series explores what it is like to live and work in England’s biggest expanse of protected countryside – in the national parks of the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. At Bleak Bank Farm in the Dales, the Dawson family prepare for their most critical week of the year amd the annual sale of their lambs at auction. The episode also follows the hound trail, a little known Cumbrian sport where hounds race around the natural bowl of Buttermere. There’s also ultra running up Helvellyn in the Lakes; while the residents of Barbon in the Dales await the arrival of high-speed broadband.

Craig Revel Horwood explores Britain’s drag scene at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern. Simon Callow tells the story of Oscar Wilde’s downfall at the Old Bailey. Rikki Beadle Blair visits the Theatre Royal Haymarket, to discover how the British public showed their support for Sir John Gielgud after his arrest for cottaging. Liz Carr travels to Bletchley Park, which fostered one of Britain’s greatest scientists, Alan Turing. In this episode, Tim and Pru leave behind the safe confines of the canals as they head out into the rarely navigated Brahmaputra river in the far north east of India. The Brahmaputra features intoxicating scenery, rich culture, and remarkable history. Tim and Pru follow an old route from the tea trade; meet a community of monks; and hitch a ride on an elephant.

Supermarket Shopping Secrets (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 26th June 2017)

Series in which Gregg Wallace and journalist Babita Sharma get the inside track on the latest tactics in the supermarket wars to help people stay one step ahead. In this edition looking at health, Gregg discovers the exotic ingredient being used to produce a healthier burger and explores spiralised vegetables, now a major health trend. In this episode, they explore the extraordinary backwaters of Kerala: a 1000-mile network of palm-fringed lakes, rivers banked by rice paddies and some very familiar-looking British-built canals. For millennia the trade in ginger, cardamom and black pepper has made the backwaters a thriving trade route for spices. Tim and Pru pass laden cargo ships, school bus-boats, and fishermen whose only tools are their hands. They explore a canal built by a local ruler to boost trade and make offerings at a temple. And Pru dusts off her dancing shoes to learn the traditional Kerlan dance of the enchantress.

Who Should We Let in? Ian Hislop on the First Great Immigration Row (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm 10:00pm | Thursday 22nd June 2017)

Ian Hislop takes an entertaining, provocative look at the decades from the Victorian Era to the First World War, when modern Britain introduced its first peacetime restrictions on immigration. The Victorians had an open door to foreigners, drawing no distinction between economic migrant and asylum seeker. But rising immigration in the late 19th century triggered a debate fuelled by clashing values, economic anxiety and the media. Ore Oduba presents live coverage from Leeds, where the fourth leg of the World Triathlon Series is taking place. Jonny Brownlee is aiming to get his world title challenge back on track after a dramatic race in Japan last time out, where he ended up having to carry his bike after a crash in the cycling phase. Jonny is joined by brother and Olympic champion Alistair, who makes his first World Series appearance of the season. The pair will certainly not lack for support as Leeds is their hometown but their rivals include five-time world champion Javier Gomez, along with current world champion and series leader Mario Mola. Leading the charge for the British women’s team is former world champion Non Stanford but she faces stiff opposition in a high-quality field, not least in the form of reigning world champion Flora Duffy, who showed she had shaken off early-season injury problems with victory in the most recent race in Yokohama.

Billy Connolly celebrates his 75th birthday and 50 years in show business by sitting for three Scottish artists – John Byrne, Jack Vettriano and Rachel MacLean. During each sitting, Billy talks about his remarkable life and career, which has taken him from musician and pioneering stand-up to Hollywood actor.

The Passengers That Took on the Train Line (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 14th June 2017)

In 2016, with the contract for Southeastern trains due to expire in six months, a group of dissatisfied but determined passengers come together to try to take a railway franchise into their own hands. Jacques Peretti follows the group as they set about executing their revolutionary plan. Is their dream far-fetched, or will the Department for Transport, looking for fresh ideas, see this new passenger-run company as a viable option for the franchise?

The Doctor is imprisoned and appears to be on the side of the enemy, flooding the airwaves with fake news. Sgt Pepper’s Musical Revolution with Howard Goodall (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Saturday 3rd June 2017)

Documentary in which composer Howard Goodall presents The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band as never heard before. The Fifteen Billion Pound Railway (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 29th May 2017)

This final episode follows the men and women racing to build London’s brand new underground railway – the Elizabeth Line – in time for the first train launch in May 2017. Engineers must construct and fit out a new station at Paddington, erect a 130m-long great glass canopy to soar above the structure and plug directly into Brunel’s original grade one listed station – a nerve-wracking feat. At Tottenham Court Road, workers are building underground platforms and concourses the size of an aircraft carrier in the heart of the world’s busiest shopping district. The team must carefully remove enormous props that hold apart the station walls, as convoys of concrete trucks drive down Oxford Street where half a million shoppers and tourists visit, every day. In Derby, a father and son team race to construct 66 trains to ferry passengers across the 30 miles of Crossrail line. Every site and engineer must pull together as they race to deliver this new fifteen billion pound railway.

History series revealing what actually happened during the Great Fire of London of 1666, hour by hour, and street by street. Dan Jones visits the exact location of the bakery where it started, Suzannah Lipscomb reveals how Londoners tried to save their belongings, and Rob Bell investigates 17th-century building materials and the prevailing weather conditions.
