UK TV programmes to watch this week : 10/09/2022

Inside Central Station (BBC Scotland 1/HD & BBC iPlayer only | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Monday 12th September 2022)

It’s Easter Weekend and an influx of rival football fans at Glasgow Central puts extra pressure on the staff and transport police, as they segregate the fans heading to Hampden. There is a new team member on the concourse as police dog recruit, Marvin, is put through his paces during training. Outside Central, the Network Rail ecologists work to help a peregrine falcon nesting on one of their bridges. And the engineering team get to work on the Argyll line track repairs.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and design duo Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead are in the Berkshire town of Wokingham to help two sets of neighbours make over a room in each other’s homes. Lucy and Andy and Mark and Jackie update a small boxy bedroom and a large beige sitting room in their 1960s homes. But has Laurence gone a step too far with his surrealist-inspired boudoir, and will Russell and Jordan be able to create a cinema and an office space in only 48 hours?

Douglas Henshall stars in the conclusion of the crime drama, based on the novels of Ann Cleeves. The team races to identify the killer and prevent disaster striking the town. David explores the BBC’s relationship with the British people, asking how the BBC can seek to serve its entire audience, amid challenges to its impartiality. He considers Radio 2’s Sachsgate affair, which resulted in thousands of complaints after Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross left actor Andrew Sachs obscene voicemail messages, as well as the rise of Rupert Murdoch, who asserted that the BBC was not serving its audience.

Kevin McCloud meets Dorran, who has taken on the ambitious task of building a super-modern underground home on a hill outside Canterbury. He entrusts the work to a team of contractors, but when delays and rising costs force him to take charge of the build himself, Dorran faces the biggest challenge of his life, juggling his time between the site and his work as a ship’s master out on the North Sea. However, having promised the house to his wife and children, he knows that failure is not an option.

On Ireland’s north-west coast, the RNLI crew at Bundoran races to the rescue of a teenage girl who has been swept out to sea by a rip-current. In Portishead, north Somerset, a man suffers serious chest injuries after falling 30ft from a cliff, and needs to be rushed to hospital. Across the Bristol Channel, in Porthcawl, a missing dog sends the crew on a wild goose chase.

Return of the drama, starring Nicholas Ralph and Samuel West. Three months have passed and it is now spring 1939, with big changes happening at Skeldale and everyone having to learn how to adjust. Tristan is now a qualified vet, while James enters a new stage of his life with Helen and at the practice. After being made joint business partner by Siegfried, James pushes to take on more responsibility via the Ministry of Agriculture’s new bovine TB testing scheme, but its unexpected challenges risk pushing him to breaking point. And as a potential world war looms, all the Skeldale family have to consider their purpose in Darrowby and beyond.

The actor is given a taste of island life when his friend Phil MacHugh takes him on a journey back to his family’s homeland of the Western Isles. Iin Stornoway, they have an appointment at the barbers to meet Syrian refugee Ousama and his eldest son Abdullah to see how their family have been settling into Western Isle life.

The Network Rail helicopter takes to the skies to survey the lines around Central for faults and Drew calls in the emergency services to help with a pigeon trapped in the station. The Central team adapt as the station’s low level closes for eight weeks as part of a huge engineering project, while a Scotland game at Hampden Park sees the concourse flooded by football fans – but there’s not enough trains.

Days that Shook the BBC with David Dimbleby (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 6th September 2022)

The veteran broadcaster offers his personal take on two crises that tested public trust in the corporation. Firstly, the Hutton Inquiry into the BBC’s coverage of the government’s dossier on weapons of mass destruction, following the Iraq War, featuring interview with Greg Dyke, Alastair Campbell and Andrew Gilligan, the journalist whose report led to the BBC’s clash with the government. He then turns his attention to the predatory paedophile Jimmy Savile, speaking to former Newsnight producer Meirion Jones who, suspecting Savile was a criminal, had interviewed one of Savile’s victims.

Jay Blades hosts as the team restores an Olympic torch brought in by retired gymnast Greg Silvester, who won numerous medals at Special Olympics events over the course of his career, and was chosen to carry the Olympic torch as part of the build-up to the Sydney Games. They also work on a beloved stuffed toy cat, a broken jukebox and an enormous colourful sign salvaged by a local community in Scotland.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and interior designer Micaela Sharp head to the market town of Macclesfield to help husband-and-wife teams Milena and Simon, and Lois and Nick, add some anime wizardry to a 10-year-old’s grey bedroom, and create a tropical boutique dream in a plain and forgotten master bedroom. With the challenge to complete a huge, complex, Japanese-inspired build in one room, and a vast headboard in another, Laurence and Micaela draw on all their design magic to pull off their outsized designs in just 48 hours.

Perez tries to get the measure of Lloyd and, fearing they could ruin the life of an innocent man, asks for more time. Meanwhile, evidence emerges of another bomb-maker when a masked figure breaks into the agricultural suppliers and steals only fertiliser. The net closes in around Martin, and Sandy uncovers Connor’s interest in a piece of local history.

Kevin McCloud meets Kate and Rob, who have lived in a 1940s prefab house built by Rob’s grandfather. Originally designed to be lived in for just 10 years, this factory-built home is well past its sell-by date. Now, Kate and Rob are at last in a position to replace it with a bespoke, modern, warm home – which will also be built in a factory using volumetric modular construction. Over just six weeks, their new house will be manufactured on a production line, complete with insulation, tiling and kitchen installation.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 8th September 2022)

In Lyme Regis, on Dorset’s Jurassic coast, the crew face a frantic search for three fishermen whose boat has capsized in the River Axe. On the west coast of Scotland, the Oban crew dash across the water to the remote island of Kerrera to help an injured walker and, across the Irish Sea, the Kinsale crew have to act quickly to help a skipper who has single-handedly sailed his yacht across the Atlantic, but is now drifting without power towards rocks.

Martin Compston’s Scottish Fling (BBC 2/HD | 9:30pm to 10:00pm | Friday 9th September 2022) ** NEW SERIES **

The Line of Duty star travels across his homeland with his best friend TV presenter Phil MacHugh, to see how its people and landscape are shaping the country. Their journey begins in Martin’s hometown of Greenock, where Phil has arranged some unexpected transport across the water to sunny Dunoon. Here the boys indulge in an end-of-the-pier snapshot of the traditional seaside holiday Martin experienced as a boy – crazy golf and ice cream with a not-so-traditional local, BBC’s Drag Race winner Lawrence Chaney.

From Margaret Thatcher and Harold Wilson, to the British monarchy, David considers moments in which the BBC has come into conflict with key parts of the establishment. Following conversations with current and former BBC staff members, including broadcaster Emily Maitlis, David argues that ensuring the BBC’s separation from those in power lies at the very heart of the Corporation’s remit.

Perez rushes to the scene of the explosion to find Tosh dazed but unharmed. He issues a warrant for Connor’s arrest, to the outrage of Rachel Cairns. The complexity and size of the bomb suggests Connor was planning some kind of attack. The team speak to those who knew him in search of extremist beliefs. Jamie, Murray and Lloyd reject any notion that Connor is capable of violence, but a despairing Danny admits environmental issues made his son angry. Meanwhile, Sandy searches for William Rodgers’ reason for being in Shetland.

Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and Whinnie Williams are in the West Yorkshire village of Haworth, to help a mother and son make over a room in each other’s homes. Mum Sonya is helped by eldest son Nathaniel, while younger son Christian works with his girlfriend Charlotte, updating a pokey kitchen and a living room with office space. But as they find, updating historic buildings without losing their charm, as well as dealing with wonky walls and uneven surfaces, brings its own challenges.

Kevin McCloud returns to follow more ambitious home-design projects, beginning by meeting adventurous couple Colin and Adele. They have employed a Swedish architect, an Italian interior design company and a Latvian building company to complete the eye-popping curved glass family home in the Manchester suburb where they both grew up.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 1st September 2022)

In Swanage, the lifeboat crew work with the specialist coastguard rope team to help an injured climber. In Rhyl, north Wales, a retired crew member comes to the aid of a person in the water when mechanical problems throw a spanner in the works of the lifeboat. And on Douglas in the Isle of Man, a fire on a fishing boat puts the crew on red alert.

This Is My House (BBC 1/HD | 8:30pm to 9:00pm | Friday 2nd September 2022)

The property-based guessing game sees four people all claiming to be Lynsay, owner of a four-bedroom detached luxury house in the Scottish borders. The property boasts a steam room, walk-in wardrobes and koi carp pond and the true Lynsay runs an online business selling luxury cheese boards. It falls to panellists Judi Love, Richard Madeley, Nabil Abdulrashid, Katie Piper and Nick Grimshaw to sort out the facts from the fiction.

Two sets of neighbours in Luton set out to transform a room in each other’s homes. To help, they have been given designs by interior experts Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead. However, Jordan and Russell have both come down with Covid-19, so helping to breathe life into their designs are Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and Whinnie Williams.

Connor’s ring is found in the same car as Bryd’s body, and while Rachel rejects any notion that her son might be involved, grieving mother Aileen Fleming presents a darker view of him. Abbie confesses that Connor used to work for drugs gangs in Glasgow, which is the real reason for his suicide attempt. With all this new evidence, Perez is forced to revise his view of the missing man – but is he capable of murder?

Return of the documentary about RNLI volunteers, beginning with a Christmas Eve case in Newhaven and the attempted rescue of two paragliders. They have landed on an isolated stretch of beach, and are now being swamped by the rapidly rising tide. At Port St Mary, on the Isle of Man, the crew race to a stranded yacht that’s in danger of breaking up on rocks with a crew of three still aboard.

This Is My House (BBC 1/HD | 8:30pm to 9:00pm | Friday 26th August 2022)

Judi Love, Richard Madeley, Harry Hill and Shaun Ryder turn detective as they try to work out which of four players is the real Ellie, owner of a two-bed ex-council flat in Pollokshields, Glasgow. Two of the potential owners enter a heated argument about where the best shops are in the neighbourhood and the quartet of Ellies are invited to talk about their relationship with the true owner’s brother. Plus, all four into the real homeowner’s wardrobe to try to prove the eclectic clothes therein belong to them.

Perez has no choice but to follow him, and soon finds himself caught up in a perilous journey into the ex-cop’s past.

Alongside three imposters, the real Tom attempts to prove he is a huge Lego fan and sets out to demonstrate the special skill he acquired while courting his beloved wife Sisa.

Cherry Healey visits a factory where she gets to grips with the construction of tough laminated heated windscreens for buses, while historian Ruth Goodman learns about London’s earliest double deckers and the vital role they played in the First World War.

The Olympic diving champion investigates homophobic behaviour around the Commonwealth, travelling to some of the countries where homosexuality is a crime and even punishable by death. In the first show, Laurence and Whinnie bring their creative flair to Tunbridge Wells, where neighbours Eddie and Lotta and Charlotte and Stuart are transforming each other’s living rooms.

Douglas Henshall returns in the detective drama, based on the novels by Ann Cleeves. DI Perez and his team look into the secret past of a family new to Shetland when they report their vulnerable son Connor has gone missing. Parents Danny and Rachel are panicking as it turns out their son once attempted suicide – and when his scooter is found abandoned, a search is launched. However, the case takes an interesting turn when Perez discovers why the family moved to Shetland in the first place.

The property-based guessing game sees four people all claiming to be Anita, the owner of an idyllic farm, complete with cows, goats, fancy pigeons and farmer husband John. It falls to panellists Judi Love, Richard Madeley, Harry Hill, Harriet Kemsley and Kadeena Cox to sort out the facts from the fiction.

Nikki, Jack and Adam are brought in to investigate the murder of a surgeon in a hospital. DNA evidence suggests the impossible when it implicates a patient who was under the anaesthetic at the time of the killing. Fever Pitch: The Rise of the Premier League (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 20th September 2021)

A look at the rise of the celebrity footballer, symbolised by Manchester United’s David Beckham and the breed of player who were starting to resemble rock stars more than sportsmen. In contrast, the programme examines the fate of Beckham’s team-mate Keith Gillespie, whose sense of isolation after a transfer to Newcastle United led him to seek solace in the local bookmakers.

Submarine: Life Under the Waves (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 20th September 2021)

Part two of two. Captain Stephen Brian takes command of HMS Trenchant and his arrival coincides with a growing threat from Russia, as their warships and submarines make forays into British waters. As everyone preparess for the tough realities of life back at sea on board a submarine, orders are received for Trenchant to stop the next Russian vessel making its way towards British waters.

In Trearddur Bay, the RNLI crew battle through gale force winds and huge waves as they try to save a surfer, as their worried families watch on from the shore. On the same stretch of Welsh coast, the Llandudno and Rhyl lifeboats are involved in a desperate search for a fishing vessel that’s reported missing.

Silent Witness (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 21st September 2021)

Part two of two. With the suspect in a coma and an attacker seemingly at large in the hospital, Nikki calls on Adam’s expertise to help solve the case. The team makes a breakthrough that hints at a medical conspiracy and exposes the lengths some are willing to go to protect their personal and professional reputations. Drama, starring Emilia Fox and Jason Wong.

Anna Richardson and the team are in Bury St Edmunds, where insurance broker Leanna and mechanic Jamie have reached decorative deadlock in their living room. They are handing over their keys to neighbour Donna, a nightclub owner who wants a wow factor in her bedroom. Donna’s keen to push Leanna and Jamie out of their comfort zone and has enlisted her sister Sarah to help. However, with flamboyant designers Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Russell Whitehead and Jordan Cluroe in charge, anything could happen.

Coastal Devon & Cornwall with Michael Portillo (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 22nd September 2021)

Michael begins this leg of his journey at South Devon’s most southerly point, Start Point, and embarks on a walk which takes in a broad sweep of eroding shingle coastline and some of the most picturesque beaches he has encountered. Along the way, he discovers historic fishing villages, and the largest freshwater lake in South West England. His South Devon trek ends near the mouth of the River Dart, but not before he leaves his own mark on this beautiful stretch of coast, a new wooden signpost for walks inscribed with his initials.

Kevin McCloud meets widowed teacher Gretta, who is making a fresh start in rural Cambridgeshire with a Malaysian-inspired burnt wood and glass home being designed by her nephew Carlos and project managed by her brother-in-law Fernando – despite his lack of building experience. However, as site clearance begins, so does the Covid-19 pandemic – and family harmony is tested when an apple tree much loved by Fernando is condemned for removal by Gretta.

Ambulance (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 23rd September 2021)

A 13-year-old stuck on a bus after dislocating their knee kicks off another busy night shift for Emily and Lois. Across the city, Adam and Charlotte respond to a call for a patient who is struggling to breathe. With concerns of Covid in the family the crew has no choice but to take the patient into hospital. A discussion between Adam and the patient reveals their anxiety about what lies ahead for them – a feeling shared right across the service whether on the road or in dispatch. Narrated by Christopher Eccleston.

The poet’s latest journey starts in Wiltshire in the town of Bradford-on-Avon, where she takes to the water on a narrowboat. Pam also meets the beekeeper producing Cotswold comb honey, before heading to the ancient wool town of Tetbury.

Exploring a luxury resort that conceals a top-secret facility, a mysterious complex in Bali struck by disaster, and a relic of hope near Jerusalem.

Lighthouses: Building the Impossible (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 24th September 2021)

Rob Bell uncovers the incredible stories behind Scotland’s mighty Bell Rock lighthouse, an engineering marvel built on a deadly submerged reef in the treacherous North Sea. Eleven miles offshore, this light has stood strong for over 200 years, but at the start of the 19th century, the reef was a menace causing innumerable wrecks and drowning countless mariners. As the show reveals, Robert Stevenson, a young, ambitious engineer, was determined to prove that something could be done to stop Bell Rock claiming so many lives.

A look at the title race between big-spending Blackburn Rovers and Manchester United in the 1994-95 season, assessing the impact of Eric Cantona’s ban for attacking a Crystal Palace supporter who had verbally abused him. The Frenchman claimed he was provoked by a racist slur, but his actions caused national outrage and the threat of a prison term loomed.

Submarine: Life Under the Waves (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 13th September 2021)

Part one of two. Life on board nuclear submarine HMS Trenchant on its four-month tour of duty to the mid-Atlantic, uncovering the reality of life at sea. Her crew prepare the submarine to leave port for the first time in six months, with enough food coming on board to last for up to 120 days underwater. Their mission is to travel to the mid-Atlantic to protect a British submarine that’s carrying Trident nuclear missiles.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 14th September 2021)

The crew at Tower, on the River Thames in London, is the busiest of all the lifeboat stations, averaging more than 500 shouts a year and aiming to launch to any emergency in under 90 seconds. When a call comes in about a man in the water near the Thames Barrier, they reach him with just moments to spare. In Fleetwood, on the Lancashire coast, a desperate 999 call alerts the crew to a bait digger – out looking for worms on the sand flats – who has been caught out by the incoming spring tide and is in danger of being submerged and swept out to sea.

Part two of two. Having traced Laura’s last movements to a suburban house, the team struggles to identify the bodies buried in the garden. Kevin McCloud meets architect Iain and his wife Jenny, who intend to build an enormous black minimalist house right in the middle of a 19th-century Scottish country estate. Their grand vision also involves connecting the new rectangular block to a dilapidated gardener’s bothy – and the neighbours are watching.

Michael heads for his final stretch in Cornwall, and takes in a coastline of hidden coves, a stunning sub-tropical garden and smugglers’ creeks, immortalised by Daphne du Maurier in her novel Frenchman’s Creek. After a surprising breakthrough in Jay’s case, Nikki struggles to accept that Scott may not be responsible. What at first appears to be a house fire, Jack confirms was an arson attack, and Nikki discovers that the victim was murdered before the fire was set. The team struggles to find a connection to Jay’s case, but when crucial evidence is retrieved from the scene, attention returns to the prison.

Not only that, but half of the plot can’t even be built on due an underground mains sewer. All they’re left with is a very small triangle on which to build their future life together. With £190,000 in the bank, Olaf and Fritha must use all the ingenuity they can muster to make their triangular three-bedroom house come to life.

North West Ambulance Service calls up military personnel to help care for the public effectively as the pandemic takes its toll. The new recruits are put through three days of intensive training before they can join the paramedics working on the frontline. Once training is complete they should be able to respond to lower category calls, which account for 20 per cent of the workload. Meanwhile, in control call handers are currently answering a new 999 call every 20 seconds. With staff sickness taking its toll on the workforce, agency staff are drafted in to help. Narrated by Christopher Eccleston.

Paul and Suki visit Norfolk for the final leg of their UK tour. Their first stop-off is Great Yarmouth’s quieter neighbour, Gorleston-on-Sea. The submarine is left exposed by a reactor shutdown, and the crew races to repair the fault. Kirsten uncovers a feud on board the Vigil, leading Amy to question whether her investigation has been deliberately obstructed. A hard-won breakthrough leads Amy to believe she finally has the killer in her sights, only for surprising new evidence to cast doubt on her theory. On land, Kirsten’s investigation leads to tragedy.

Almost 20 years since September 11, this feature-length documentary follows President George W Bush and his staff as they dealt with the large-scale terrorist attack, in which four commercial aircraft were used as missiles on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. The events of that day led to two decades of conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq. As America and its allies now withdraw from Afghanistan and the Taliban resume control, this is the story of how it all began. The film features testimony from George W Bush himself, as well as staff members Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice and Colin Powell.

All they need is a little trust in each other and the individual visions of Changing Rooms legend Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, and design duo Jordan Cluroe and Russell Whitehead.

Kevin McCloud visits a couple planning to build a home that looks like a work of art overlooking a valley in south Devon. Joe and Claire’s new home will be a giant sculpture inspired by the local landscape, 70 metres long and featuring 34 enormous angled zinc shards jutting out in all directions. It will also be complicated to build and equally as expensive. And although Joe is wealthy, ambitious and fearless, his team quickly come up against problems and the budget virtually doubles the first walls go up. Is his dream home in danger of become a nightmare?

The presenter explores the rugged North Cornish coast, beginning in Widemouth Bay, a gigantic stretch of coastline with ancient links to the Celtic nations of Wales and Brittany. Battling a storm blowing in from the Atlantic, Michael heads south and takes shelter in a magical and ancient woodland, before spending the night at the vicarage where novelist Thomas Hardy stayed in 1870, and penned a poem named after a local landmark, Beeny Cliff.

Paramedic Linda and mental health nurse Emma respond to patients in mental health crisis across Liverpool. Their work in the community aims to reduce the number of mental health hospital admissions, and the first call of the morning is a patient struggling with depression and bipolar. As the shift winds into the afternoon, a call from the police requesting a welfare check takes priority for Linda and Emma. There are concerns for the patient, who is an asylum seeker who appears to be struggling with his mental health, caused by isolation.

Paul and Suki are in the Peak District on their UK staycation adventure in their trusty motorhome. The first morning finds them in a campsite north of Bakewell, and they debate who should empty the on-board loo. Later, Suki reveals they are swapping four wheels for two after hiring bikes on the nearby Monsal Trail, a disused former railway line.

Queen Victoria was a driving force behind the mass appeal of rail travel that developed in the 19th century. There’s a look around Victoria’s royal train, which has been preserved in all its finery.
