The Green Planet (BBC 1/HD | 7:00pm to 8:00pm | Sunday 16th January 2022)

David Attenborough presents a guide to the world of plants that grow in water, including a bubbling river in Brazil, where the plants have created their own atmosphere and a lake smothered in brightly-coloured flowers. Plus, plants that fight each other for growing space or use natural adhesives to prevent themselves being swept downstream, and a look at the methods used to evade or even attack animals.

Kate walks a rugged and scenic route along Ayrshire’s coast, the birthplace of Scotland’s National Bard, poet Robert Burns. This 15-mile walk follows the Ayrshire Coastal Path south from Ayr to the coastal farming community at Dowhill, home to a unique potato. Leaving Ayr, her path follows the shoreline south, skirting wild beaches.

Iain continues his coast-to-coast walk along the Southern Upland Way, setting out from Sanquhar with his friend actor Howard Ward, parting ways at Wanlockhead. The next day he takes advantage of the fact that his chef neighbour Christine Burke is holidaying in the area in her camper van.

Kate Humble’s Coastal Walks (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 14th January 2022)

Kate’s starting point for the latest leg is the picturesque village of Alnmouth, once a leading grain port in the 18th century. Today it’s known for its colourful houses and a gentle sweep of sandy beach where Kate meets a former GP, Claire, who uses the sand to create temporary large – scale artworks and portraits, which are visible for a few hours only, before the tide swallows them.

Nancy’s first day as a midwife gets off to a bad start when her bedroom ceiling collapses.

Return of the documentary following the ups and downs of everyday life for a Royal Navy crew, this time going aboard frigate HMS Northumberland on a four-month tour of duty with the 220 personnel. Captain Thom Hobbs prepares his ship to set sail, with deputy logistics officer Meghan Burgoyne overseeing the loading of the copious amounts of food required for the time at sea, and young chef Sauhil James prepares for his very first deployment.

Elton John enters an addiction rehabilitation session, and recounts his life in a flashback, covering his days as young Reginald Dwight growing up in 1950s Britain. Michael Portillo takes a trip in a Second World War Spitfire above Biggin Hill aerodrome, and takes the train to East Grinstead on the trail of Winnie the Pooh. Crossing the Menai Strait by the Britannia Bridge, Michael arrives on Anglesey and the elegant seat of the Marquesses of the island.

Michael Portillo continues his 1936 Bradshaw’s-inspired railway tour of north Wales. He begins in the coastal city of Bangor, where he hears how, when war broke out in September 1939, 2,000 children from the cities of northern England were evacuated by train to north Wales. Heading inland alongside the River Conwy, Michael reaches Tal y Cafn, before investigating the worst dam disaster in Welsh history in Dolgarrog. Finally in Betws y Coed, he attempts to climb one of Snowdonia’s lesser peaks.

Ian also shares the story of his own formative years, shaped by a difficult relationship with his stepfather, and on the final leg of his journey visits a charity who work with people at risk of committing, or who have already committed, domestic abuse.

The Covid-19 pandemic reveals the enormity of the challenge that climate change poses, as the drop in emissions during lockdown proves far from enough to get the world back on track. She explores new measures to reduce the level of emissions further, visiting a tree plantation and learning about a machine that sucks carbon dioxide out of the air. She also explains the everyday choices that members of the public can make to reduce their environmental impact.

Four people claim to be an artist called Erica, living with partner Sam in a stylish property in south-east London. A journey down the mighty Hudson river, weaving 315 miles through some of New York state’s most stunning natural landscapes, and ending at the Statue of Liberty. The trek begins at the Adirondack Mountains, where the forested slopes are covered with trees turned a thousand brilliant colours in the autumn sunshine. Bill Nighy narrates.
