UK TV programmes to watch this week : 11/02/2023

Michael McIntyre’s Big Show (BBC 1/HD | 7:00pm to 8:00pm | Saturday 11th February 2023)

Michael presents another hour of entertainment, featuring music from Olly Murs, singing Dancing on Cars, and Stacey Dooley handing over her mobile in Send to All. There’s a rude awakening for Alexander Armstrong when he plays the Midnight Gameshow and a pair of Unexpected Stars of the Show are invited to perform a duet.

Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Series 1, episode 1. The actor and writer is magically transported back in time to chart the 180-million-year story of the prehistoric creatures, beginning by going back 155 million years to the Jurassic period. He explores the conifer forests and fern prairies that were their home, encountering a monstrous plant-eating diplodocus and deadly predator the allosaurus. Expert Susie Maidment arrives to decode these dinosaurs’ remarkable behaviour, including the diplodocus’s acrobatic ability to rear up on its hind legs and the allosaurus’s terrifying attack strategy.

Everyone is looking forward to Trixie and Matthew’s wedding and a bonny baby competition brings the community together. It’s not all good news, however, as the team learn about a pregnant woman and her family living in a cramped caravan, while a worrying disease outbreak directly impacts the residents of Nonnatus House.

Claudia Winkleman searches for passionate pianists at public pianos in train stations across the UK. Unbeknownst to the performers they are being watched by Lang Lang and Mika who are looking for one amateur musician to perform at London’s Royal Festival Hall. The search begins in King’s Cross St Pancras.

Series 3, episode 7. Following Neville’s arrest on suspicion of killing David Cartwright, DI Karen Flitcroft from the Department of Policing Standards arrives to investigate. CCTV footage shows an agitated Neville visiting the victim shortly before he was found dead, which as far as Flitcroft is concerned proves his guilt – so she advises the team members that if they are convinced of their inspector’s innocence, they must prove it quickly.

Monica Joan welcomes an unusual guest into Nonnatus House and Fred worries about the pressure one of his paperboys is under to support his father and younger siblings.

A list ranking female students causes chaos throughout the school and Samia takes matters into her own hands to find the source, but when she finds out Kelly Jo is keeping things from her they start to fall apart. Cotswolds. Series 2, episode 2. Paul Merton and Suki Webster explore the Cotswolds, helping Richard and his apprentice Innis build a dry stone wall before driving to their first off-grid campsite, pitching up for the night for an al fresco three-course dinner. The next day they visit the the Rollright Stones, where they meet Sharp and Blunt, an all-female morris dancing group from nearby Adderbury.

Familiar Faces (Part 1/2). An abandoned lorry is found at a quarry with several dead and dying people in the back. At first it appears to be a case of sex trafficking, but it soon becomes clear that all is not as it seems. With the survivors refusing to speak, Nikki and the team must use their pathological and forensic skillset to identify the deceased and piece together what happened.

Waterloo Road is rocked by some shocking news. Kim shares the truth about her personal life, teaching Shola a life lesson. The team investigates a Preppers commune when one of its members is poisoned inside a locked bunke. A terminally ill patient discharges herself from hospital and wishes to be cared for by her friend.

Cornwall. Series 2, episode 1. Paul Merton and Suki Webster take to the roads again, beginning by heading to Cornwall, home to crystal-clear waters, picturesque fishing villages and beautiful beaches. Their first destination is the Lizard – the most southerly point on the British mainland – where they go seal watching, before going out with a local fisherman to try their hands at catching spider crabs.

The Penitent (Part 1/2). A man is thrown from a high-rise building, an incident that may be connected to a notorious organised crime syndicate. A group of astronomers gathers on the cliffs of Saint Marie to watch Jupiter and Saturn align – a once-in-a-lifetime planetary event. However, one of its number – renowned professor Bertrand Sworder – meets an untimely death. The circumstances of his demise warrant the involvement of Neville and Naomi, who soon learn there was some professional hostility towards Sworder. Back at the station, Darlene announces that she has passed her exam and is ready to be a trainee officer. Caribbean-set detective drama, starring Ralf Little, Don Warrington and Tahj Miles.

Documentary celebrating Richard Curtis’s much-loved sitcom, featuring clips along with insight and analysis from cast, crew and celebrity fans. The programme examines how the fictional village of Dibley was never the same once Dawn French’s inimitable comedy creation Geraldine Granger arrived as the new vicar, and there is a look at the Comic Relief specials.

As Christmas 1967 comes round, Poplar is returning to normal after the train crash and Matthew is delighted to see the return of Trixie from Portofino. The midwives move the clinic into new premises, where they treat old patient Rhoda, who is understandably nervous after her last baby was born with limbs affected by Thalidomide, and a heavily pregnant single mother recently released from prison. Meanwhile, Fred comes up with the idea of a festive talent show to raise money for those still affected by the crash.

The Danebury Metal Detecting Club is in trouble after losing out on a big finder’s fee, and with developers sniffing round, the members are going to need a miracle to help save their beloved scout hall. However, when a mysterious relic is unearthed, Lance breaks protocol, threatening his friendship with Andy and the future of the DMDC. He took fellow students under his wing and even starred in the school production of South Pacific. But then his unbelievable secret was revealed. This documentary tells the incredible story of a man who lived his school days twice, with Alan Cumming and Lulu helping to bring the tale to life.

Michael Portillo crosses the Severn to begin a trip along the south coast of Wales, joining maintenance workers on a hair-raising secret railway high above the estuary. From Newport, Michael makes for Caerleon, where he discovers how its Roman history was eclipsed by the legend of King Arthur and his Round Table.

A livestock auctioneer prepares for the biggest sale of his career so far, while a farmer in Ravenstonedale, Cumbria, uses goats’ milk to make products from cheese to soap. A mountain guide ensures that walkers attempting the gruelling 24-mile challenge of Yorkshire’s Three Peaks in under 12 hours make it to the end of their journey safely.

Great Coastal Railway Journeys (BBC 2/HD | 6:30pm to 7:00pm | Tuesday 22nd February 2022)

Michael Portillo continues his South Wales coastal railway journey in Barry Island, where he joins a Bristol pilot on his way to help guide a feeder container ship into port. Skirting the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, Michael alights at Llantwit Major to visit St Donat’s Castle, before reaching the pretty seaside resort of Porthcawl.

A politician’s visit puts pressure on the already beleaguered workforce, especially head midwife Tracy, who has to organise the event while also doing her own job. Adam is preoccupied by a beloved older patient with cancer and Shruti suspects a pregnant woman is being abused by her partner, but struggles to get her alone. Away from work, Adam finally opens up to Harry. Comedy drama, starring Ben Whishaw.

Ben Fogle: New Lives in the Wild (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 22nd February 2022)

Ben spends time with a multi-generational family in Oxfordshire who have left their conventional life behind and relocated to an empty plot of land which they have transformed. Ben learns about the obstacles the family have overcome and how they have spent two decades honing their skills and living off the land.

Great Coastal Railway Journeys (BBC 2/HD | 6:30pm to 7:00pm | Wednesday 23rd February 2022)

Michael Portillo’s coastal rail journey along the south coast of Wales reaches the town of Port Talbot, where he investigates how the steel industry is planning to decarbonise. Across the Bay, Michael arrives in The Mumbles, site of the world’s first passenger railway in 1807, before making his way from Gowerton to Burry Port and heading for the wild and blustery Pembrey Sands.

Michael Portillo travels the rural coastline of Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire in south Wales. From Carmarthen Bay, he tracks up the estuary and River Towy to the historic town of Carmarthen and Middleton Hall, home of Wales’s National Botanic Garden. There, Michael is on the trail of the quarter of a million honeybees that live in the garden.

Michael Portillo reaches the most westerly station in Wales, on the final leg of his rail journey along its southern coastline. At Milford Haven, Michael learns from the Harbour Master about the biggest energy port in the United Kingdom, which has an oil refinery and storage terminals as well as natural gas terminals. Further along the estuary at Pembroke Dock, Michael visits a pioneering project to harness the power of the sea.

Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 25th February 2022)

The presenter visits the Peak District in the heart of England, famed for its striking landscapes and rolling hills. There Susan negotiates Segway tracks, rides a tram, braves the River Derwent, and scales the Heights of Abraham in a cable car.

Michael Portillo sets off on the first leg of a trip from the Firth of Clyde to Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides, beginning with a visit to a nuclear power station on the Hunterston Peninsula. He then learns about Largs’ Viking past and admires one of the most beautiful railway stations in Britain at Wemyss Bay. The importance of ferries to connect western Scotland with its many islands becomes plain to Michael at Port Glasgow in the deep waters of the Clyde, where he visits Ferguson Marine, builders of Calmac ferries.

From the 250-year old ‘new town” of Helensburgh on the north bank of the Clyde, Michael takes his favourite West Highland Line across epic landscapes to Garelochhead and Ben Cruachan, and makes his way to Connel Bridge and the waters of Loch Etive.

Ben journeys to one of Britain’s furthest outposts, the Shetland Islands, to meet Helen and Jason, a couple just a few years into their new life on the edge of the weather-beaten island of Yell. Later, Michael heads to the tiny Isle of Staffa, where he follows in the wake of a young Felix Mendelssohn, who was only 20-year-old when he set eyes on the volcanic sea cavern, Fingal’s Cave.
