Documentary following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). At Anstruther station in Scotland, one of their newest helms, George, takes charge for his first shout to a serious medical evacuation.

Grand Designs (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 19th September 2018)

Kevin McCloud returns for a new series of the show that follows intrepid individuals trying to design and build their dream home. In Buckinghamshire he meets young Spanish architect Jaime and his wife Mimi as they embark on an epic mission to convert a Grade II* listed folly into a family home. Originally designed to exhibit a fossil collection, but gutted by fire and left in ruins for the last 200 years, the crumbling mini castle beguiles Jaime and Mimi. Giving themselves a wildly optimistic six month deadline to finish before the birth of their second child, it’s not long before the couple hit trouble. The Saxon burial ground the folly is built on throws up some macabre surprises. Their stonemasons from Madrid let them down and local builders with no restoration experience have to take on the crumbling stonework. Jaime puts all his energies and creativity into the project, using innovative 3D mapping to squeeze living spaces into the tower, but it’s an exhausting struggle.

Michael Palin in North Korea (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 20th September 2018)

Travelogue series into the notably private nation. Michael arrives in the capital Pyongyang, where he meets the guides who will follow his every move, visits the statues of Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il, watches propaganda art being created, and asks a local student what they know about the outside world.

Jason Plato is joined by former F1 driver Karun Chandhok to see who will be crowned king of the hot-hatches. The team test the first Mercedes pick-up truck, the X-Class.

Rob Bell explores the lost landscapes and infrastructure of some of Britain’s former railway lines. In Scotland, Rob follows the Elgin to Portsoy line, a line that once served the fishing and whisky industries. Local ramblers help him unearth a stunning view of the Spey Bridge, then, after trying a warming tipple of the hard stuff, he watches a boat race in Portsoy.

The revolution began in Liverpool, which suffered the highest mortality rates in the country. But it took the Great Stink of 1858 to convince Parliament to create a sewer system for the capital.

The home secretary’s principal protection officer David Budd struggles to come to terms with the fallout from the devastating events of the last 24 hours. The police retake control of the investigation into the attacks from the suddenly weakened security service, and David is questioned by counterterrorism detectives DCI Deepak Sharma and DS Louise Rayburn. Pushed to breaking point, David is helped back on his feet by his estranged wife, Vicky, and is determined to play an active role in the investigation, starting with those closest to Julia in government. At first Rayburn wants to keep David out of the enquiry, until he delivers a breakthrough.

In this Heatwave special edition of Hidden Britain by Drone, history and archaeology enthusiast Sir Tony Robinson investigates how this summer’s long dry spell created the perfect conditions for the mysterious ‘parch marks’ that led to these remarkable discoveries. He meets the archaeologists and drone pilots that have been flying all over the country to record this transient phenomenon. Once it rains, the marks disappear, but the hidden secrets have been revealed – now it’s a question of what happens next to these hidden historic gems.

On the Lilly Loch in Knapdale forest he gets a glimpse of beaver, before joining a group of steam enthusiasts restoring an old puffer on the Crinan Canal. Stone Age rock art leads him north to Loch Awe, where he drives a herd of Highland cows towards his final destination – the mountainous heights of Ben Cruachan.

Documentary following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). The Porthcawl crew have just seconds to spare when two teenagers on holiday get caught on a rocky outcrop by a large swell and a rising spring tide.

DIY SOS (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 12th September 2018)

In this two-part series, Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS team attempt their biggest and longest build yet – constructing two brand new buildings for the Grenfell community. The team attempt to build a two-storey flexible-use centre that can be used by the community however it decides. Research indicated that there wasn’t enough low-cost space that different community groups could use in the area, so with the help of generous construction companies, suppliers and volunteers, the DIY SOS team attempt to do what they can to help. The team are joined by the Duke of Cambridge, who meets local residents and talks to firefighters who were among the first responders on the night of the fire. Along the way, Nick meets different groups who could benefit from the building of a new community space.

Phil Spencer’s Stately Homes (more4 | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 3rd September 2018)

Phil explores the magnificent Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire and gets to know its formidable builders, John Churchill, the first Duke of Marlborough, and his wife Sarah. Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill, Phil’s host, explains that the palace was a gift to the Marlborough family from their friend Queen Anne, a monument to the Duke’s victory over the French at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704. However, in the archive Phil discovers the build was plagued with problems: fall-outs with the architect, unpaid builders and costs beyond even the wildest estimates. Phil tots up a total in today’s money that makes Blenheim the most expensive house he’s ever visited.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 4th September 2018)

Documentary following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). In Brighton the crew are called out to what they think is just a routine job – towing a yacht that has lost power back to harbour – but a sudden spring squall and mountainous waves leave the crew fighting to save the yacht and themselves from being dashed on the shore.

Britain by Bike with Larry and George Lamb (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 7th September 2018)

Travelogue series with the father-and-son duo, exploring Britain’s most spectacular cycle routes from the saddle. Events include the fast, gladiatorial 4X and the brutal downhill, which launches off from the top of the Nevis range, with the best riders in the world plummeting 555 metres down one of the longest and toughest courses on the circuit. Presented by Duncan McCallum and Dougie Vipond.

Flying Across Britain with Arthur Williams (Channel 4/HD | 7:00pm to 8:00pm | Sunday 26th August 2018)

Arthur’s final airborne journey covers the epicentre of Britain’s wartime aviation effort – the east coast. He visits four airfields that played a role in World War Two, but have completely changed since. First up is Lincolnshire, which once boasted 46 military airfields. Only five remain today. At East Kirkby, a local family have bought and preserved part of the former airbase as a memorial. Flying over East Anglia, Arthur has an overview of the staggering scale of the wartime ‘friendly invasion’ by tens of thousands of American servicemen. At RAF Lakenheath, he sees the US Air Force’s awesome F15 fighter. At Cranwell, he visits the world’s oldest and grandest air academy and home to the only aerobatic team in the world licensed to take passengers – and there’s no way Arthur’s leaving without hitching a ride.

Dispatching flying cameras of many shapes and sizes, Tony opens up the far reaches of Britain. In this episode, Tony sends his drones to a top-security active nuclear decommissioning site. They also reveal the truth behind crop circles and explore the hidden world of bats.

In this revealingly intimate documentary, Adrian Chiles takes a long hard look at his own love of boozing. He wants to find out why he and many others don’t think they are addicted to alcohol, despite finding it almost impossible to enjoy life without it. Adrian, who drinks almost every day, decides to start a drinking diary and soon finds out his intake is way over the recommended limit. He decides to visit his parents to find out what it was that motivated him to start drinking as a teenager and reveals that sneaking into pubs underage was all about friendship and being part of something, and that the allure of the social side of drinking has never really left him since his teens.

Phil visits the beautiful Houghton Hall in Norfolk, built by Britain’s first Prime Minister, the wily Sir Robert Walpole. As guest of its current owner, Lord David Cholmondeley, Phil uncovers a house clearly built without any limit on costs: It features some of the finest carved stone interiors ever created, jaw-dropping bedrooms, ‘beer taps’ in a marble dining room, and the most extravagant thing Phil has ever seen: a 17ft silver embroidered bed. It’s no wonder Sir Robert wanted to keep the costs – and how he raised the money – a secret; the truth could have rocked Parliament.

Keeping watch over the River Thames, the crew at Tower in central London, the busiest of the RNLI’s 238 stations, are called to a man reported in the water eight miles downstream. On arrival, they discover a river bus already on the scene and their crew desperately trying to hang on to the unmoving man before he disappears under the water.

In the second episode, Arthur is in the South East, plotting a path around London airspace, where, ‘One wrong move here, and you can land yourself in a lot of trouble’. Over the Isle of Sheppey, on the North Kent coast, he locates clearer skies and visits the spot where British aviation first got off the ground in 1909. Later, Arthur follows the M25 from 1000 feet, before dropping in on the vast Cardington Sheds, home to the biggest aircraft in the world. He also visits Biggin Hill and takes a Spitfire out for a spin, high above the Kent countryside.

In need of expert help, Aziz Tayub and his three sons bring in retail guru Chris Edwards as a new CEO. His brief: to save the company. Poundstretcher loses millions of pounds every year to theft, as there seems to be a growing army of shoplifters, who store managers like Tracey, in Bolton, heroically confront. However, in this episode, shocking revelations suggest that the real issue lies closer to home. Chris has brought in a new head of loss prevention, ex-army tough guy Mark Boyd, who discovers that some staff members are partly to blame for Poundstretcher’s losses.

Documentary following Glasgow businesswoman Celia Sinclair on her mission to rescue the old Willow Tea Rooms on Sauchiehall Street – one of the earlier works of artist and architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh – and restore them to their former glory. Celia was inspired by pioneering Glasgow businesswoman Miss Cranston, who in 1903 commissioned the young and still largely unknown Mackintosh to design the luxurious, cutting-edge tea rooms with iconic chairs, tables, wall decorations and chandeliers. Celia bought the remains of the old Willow Tea Rooms building on Sauchiehall Street to save it for Glasgow and had a grand vision to reopen in time for Mackintosh’s 150th birthday in 2018.

Documentary series going behind the scenes at Paddington, and the Western Network. A driver raises the alarm when he suspects that his train has hit something, or someone, on the line. Heavy rain brings down a tree which closes the tracks between Banbury and Oxford, and engineers begin the process of dismantling a Victorian viaduct.

Documentary series following the men and women of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). As the summer sun comes out, so do the fun seekers, and crews around the country get ready for action. In Southend, a family of five out sightseeing are a mile off shore and waist-deep in water after being caught out by the tide. The Shoreham crew are paged in the early hours after a drunken festival-goer jumps in the river. And the Brighton crew fear the worst when a man tombstones off the pier at low tide.

When an early morning dog walker spots a flare off shore, the Rhyl crew race to one of the most mysterious shouts they have seen. The Lowestoft crew find themselves paged to help to a sailor who doesn’t want to be rescued. And at Tower, a good samaritan is clinging on for his life after trying to rescue a dog which has jumped into the Thames.

Grand Designs (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 18th October 2017)

Ecologist Fred and communications manager Saffron Baker live in a beautiful village in the highly protected Peak District. After 15 years of saving and planning, they’re finally able to start building their large, new family home on a steep slope on the edge of the village. Desperate not to annoy the neighbours, their innovative design features just one storey visible from the main road, but two more storeys buried out of sight lower down the slope. The start of construction proves more a feat of civil engineering than a house build, with the difficulty of excavating into solid limestone, compounded by an incredibly steep and muddy access road for the heavy machinery. Then when their self-build mortgage falls through, work stops for months. It’s a major test of Saffron and Fred’s commitment and resolve, when all they have to show for years of effort is a huge hole in the ground.

Documentary series following the work of Argyll and Bute council, charting the unique challenges faced by staff working hundreds of miles from the nearest city to provide services in difficult times. In this first episode, cameras follow Desmond Middleton, one of only two council debt counsellors covering the entire region of Argyll and Bute at a time when one in six people are struggling with debt. Plus the how housing officers in Rothesay tackle issues of isolation across Bute, and a rare insight into the council-run airport in Oban, which provides a lifeline to the islands and communities it serves.

Britain by Bike with Larry and George Lamb (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 20th October 2017)

Travelogue series with father-and-son duo Larry and George Lamb, exploring Britain’s national parks from the saddle. They cycle through the New Forest National Park where they encounter the famous ponies, set up a bushcraft camp, attend a chair building class, and canoe down the Beaulieu River.

Documentary series going behind the scenes at Paddington. The Queen arrives at Paddington on board one of GWR’s new Intercity Express Trains, commemorating a trip made by her forebear Queen Victoria. At Reading station, Revenue Protection Officer Lyn has to call for back up when a fare dodger makes a run for it.

Robson Green explores the extraordinary lives and homes of the people who live on Britain’s coastline – from families who are swapping their city homes for a new life by the sea to those who have lived on the coast for generations. His coastal journey reaches the east coast as Robson finds out more about the community spirit that makes life by the sea so fulfilling. He meets a couple living on a seal sanctuary, a volunteer lighthouse keeper who lives four days a month at the remote coastal location of Spurn Point, and meets the people who live on a former World War I campsite that now houses chalets with listed status.

This is one of the most ambitious homes ever seen on Grand Designs – a scaly, curving house that’s reminiscent of a giant coiled snake. Stephen Tetlow is head of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Stephen’s wife Elizabeth is a committed horticulturalist. Together they want to build a home that reflects their passions – one that pushes Stephen’s engineering skills to the limit and embraces Elizabeth’s deep affinity with nature. Taking inspiration from an ammonite shell found on their land in the beautiful Blackdown Hills in Devon, the house spirals onto the landscape over two levels and mixes natural materials with cutting edge technology. Construction of such a complex curving structure proves a huge challenge and progress is tortuously slow.

This time he is in Pembrokeshire, meeting a family who have bought their very own island – complete with Napoleonic fort. Robson also goes fishing with a lobsterman who could not bear to be away from the coast where he grew up, and makes a splash with the ‘Bluetits’, Pembrokeshire’s wetsuit-free swimming club who love a swim in the chilly Celtic sea.

For most of us, rust and ruin are not interior design choices. But Beth Dadswell and Andrew Wilbourne can’t resist a bit of decay. As designers, they are passionate about preserving the marks of time. They’ve rescued a crumbling Victorian dairy in south east London, and plan to convert it into a family home while retaining as much of the ramshackle roof and crumbling brickwork as possible. All this in just six months and on a tight budget of £260k. As they begin stripping back the old dairy, the poor condition of the building becomes plain. It’s full of rusting metal and rotting wood. Beth and Andrew have to make some painful decisions about just how much decay they can live with. As time goes on, their vision of a ‘shabby chic’ finish, including a Parisian courtyard, is under threat from the pressure to make their new home fit for modern life.
