Guy Martin’s Spitfire (Channel 4/HD | 7:30pm to 9:00pm | Sunday 12th October 2014)

The Supermarine Spitfire was Britain’s most successful fighter plane and remains an iconic symbol of Britain’s resistance during the Second World War. In May 1940, while covering the retreat from Dunkirk, a Mark 1 Spitfire flown by RAF ace Squadron Leader Geoffrey Stephenson was shot down and crash-landed on a beach in northern France, where it slowly sank into the sand. The wreckage was finally recovered in the 1980s and stored anonymously in France for more than 20 years. In this special documentary, Guy Martin – speed junkie, motorcycle racer, lorry mechanic and Spitfire fanatic – joins a restoration team as it embarks on a two-year rebuild of this Spitfire. This extraordinary project provides a look at the amazing engineering and skills involved in building the aircraft, and is also a fitting homage to the bravery of everyone involved in its service: the male and female factory workers, the ground crews and the pilots.

Grand Tours of the Scottish Islands (BBC 1 Scotland/HD & BBC iPlayer only | 7:30pm to 8:00pm | Monday 13th October 2014)

Paul Murton sets out to experience island life on the myriad of islands that lie off the Scottish coast. In this edition, he visits a little-known string of islands off the west coast of Oban, starting with island of Kerrera. Paul learns of Kerrera’s vital part as a base for the RAF’s Seaplane Squadron during WWII, where the Sunderland seaplanes took off from to provide air cover to convoys during the Battle of the Atlantic. He then crosses the renowed ‘Bridge over the Atlantic’ on the mainland to get to Easdale. Here he discovers the role that this island’s quarries, and those of its neighbours Luing and Belnahua, played in building Britain’s empire and reviews how little life has changed on the island. His final destination is Eileach an Naoimh, one of the Garvallach islands, home to the oldest Christian burial site in Scotland, and believed to be the final resting place of Saint Columba’s mother.

It is the summer term and Alfie Wickers is back as the self-styled maverick of Abbey Grove. Fraser discovers that Alfie never passed his biology GCSE, so Alfie must go back to school himself to be taught by Gulliver and sit the exam with his own class. It should be the perfect opportunity to prove to Gulliver that he can motivate his class and lead by example, but Alfie decides there is only one real option: cheating. But, with the revelation that the notorious invigilator Mr Hewston will be overseeing the exam, it becomes clear that this is going to be a battle of wits. Meanwhile Martin Wickers is babysitting his girlfriend’s dog and Fraser is organising the end-of-exam skip party.

A new family arrive at Waterloo Road and immediately shake things up both in and out of the classroom. Dominant and forward-thinking, Vaughan Fitzgerald has all the makings of the dynamic headteacher the school needs, while his confident partner Allie takes the reins of the art department. But their professional veneer just might be tested as their warring children’s behaviour threatens to spill out into the classroom. Christine vows to help Darren with his desperate situation at home but neither are prepared for the shocking scene that awaits when they try to confront his mother. George has been bled dry by Carol over the summer and pledges to make a change. He soon finds out why no one messes with a Barry and gets away with it.

Grand Designs (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 15th October 2014)

Andy and Nicki Bruce are desperate to live on the River Thames, but worried about the ever-present dangers of flooding. They want to build an amphibious or ‘floating’ house, the first of its kind in the UK. Their architect has come up with an ambitious, experimental design that will see the whole house magically rise up with the flood waters. This clever engineering solution has never been tried on a river bank in Britain and no one knows whether it will work. The Bruces decide to build on a site on a small island in the river. Budgeted at £1.2m, the bold, if slightly bonkers, plan is to dig down deep below the water line to create a concrete dock in which a three-storey concrete-hulled home can rest. But it’s not long before the project becomes bogged down in the logistical challenges of building such a complex design on a small island that is only accessible via a narrow footbridge.

When Clara turns to the Doctor for help, she gets the shock of her life.

Grand Tours of the Scottish Islands (BBC 1 Scotland/HD & BBC iPlayer only | 7:30pm to 8:00pm | Monday 6th October 2014)

Paul Murton sets out to experience island life on the myriad of islands that lie off the Scottish coast. In this edition, he visits two islands of the Inner Hebrides, Gigha and Jura. He begins his journey at the Achamore Gardens on Gigha, which were created by millionaire Colonel Sir James Horlick in the 1930s. Sir James loved Gigha’s mild climate so much that he bought the island and made it his home. Today Gigha is owned by the community and many of its residents are incomers attracted by the opportunity to begin a new island life on this small and fertile place. His next destination is the rugged Jura, which, despite being one of Scotland’s largest islands, houses just 200 people alongside thousands of deer. He takes a boat trip to the north of the island to experience the infamous Corryvreckan whirlpool, which nearly claimed the life of George Orwell, before visiting the remote Glen Garrisdale Bay and getting a lesson in how to cut peat.

It is the summer term and Alfie Wickers is back as the self-styled maverick of Abbey Grove. Martin Wickers’s attempts to teach Alfie to drive end in disaster when they run over the school caretaker. Alfie and his class start fundraising for the caretaker’s urgent surgery. However, when the school bully Grayson is transferred to Alfie’s class, it soon becomes clear that their noble intentions might be difficult with him around. Soon Alfie and his class find themselves no longer leading a charitable enterprise, but being taken on a joyride in a stolen ambulance. Fraser has taken up pole dancing and sees the fundraiser as the perfect opportunity to demonstrate his skills.

Drama series based on the true story of the Mottershead family who, in the face of staunch opposition and huge personal sacrifice, founded Chester Zoo in the 1930s. The family’s last chance is to convince a visiting inspector from the Ministry of Health to overturn the council ban on a zoo at Oakfield. But when the nets of the aviary are slashed, George begins to lose his grip on the case – and his self-control. Concerned he might throw their last chance away, Lizzie reaches out for legal help, which comes at a cost. The high emotion of the hearing sees a hidden truth tumbling out for Reverend Webb, which helps tip the balance. An inspection of the zoo is held but the final decision could take weeks.

Natasha Cargill wants to build a home shaped like two enormous periscopes in rural Norfolk. To get planning permission, she has to ensure not only that the materials used are sustainable, but also agree to measure the transportation used to deliver them. The planning controls are so rigid in fact that even details like the type of portaloos the builders use and the size of her bath have to be monitored. If the strict criteria are not met, Natasha won’t be allowed to live there. Natasha has just £330k to spend on construction and just six months to complete. It’s not long before the pressure to not just complete the house, but meet the numerous planning constraints, starts to take its toll.

Danny MacAskill – Riding the Ridge (BBC 1 Scotland/HD & BBC iPlayer only |7:30pm to 8:00pm | Friday 10th October 2014)

Documentary following Scottish cyclist Danny MacAskill as he attempts to capture his performance on and around the dramatic Black Cuillin mountain range on Skye, where he and his crew endured long treks and tricky terrain over the 10-day shoot.

Mr Church and Miss Postern discover that sharing does not come naturally to either of them, while Mr Gunn learns that sometimes people can share too much.

In this edition, he explores the Isle of Mull and its satellites to discover why they have boltholes from the freneticism of modern life. He begins his journey on the tidal island of Erraid which inspired writer Robert Louis Stevenson before heading to the Ulva, the final resting place of Lachlan McQuarrie, one of the first governors of New South Wales and the man credited as the father of Australia. Paul then explores Mull in the company of rally driver Louise Thomas, who frequently competes in the renowned Mull Rally. On the mysterious island of Inch Kenneth, he discovers how Nazi sympathiser Unity Mitford, from the Mitford family that once owned the island, was sent there to recuperate from a self-inflicted shooting during the War. His final destination is the remote Treshnish Islands where he enjoys a spot of puffin therapy.

Documentary series following the workers who keep the traffic flowing on one of the busiest stretches of road in Britain, where the country’s longest motorway, the M6, meets four other major routes. This episode looks at the work of the highways agency, motorway police and other agencies making the nation’s motorways safer and explores the environmental, economic and emotional costs of accidents that occur on Britain’s motorways.

She and George embark on a trip to London to convince the deputy minister of health to grant an appeal, while the family deal with a shocking new arrival at Oakfield.

Tracy Fox and her husband Steve want to build an ‘urban shed’, featuring two studios, three bedrooms and a double-height space with a walkway, made out of industrial-style materials, including corrugated cement fibre board and 20-foot panels of polycarbonate sheeting. All the basic building materials are to be left deliberately rough and exposed, with inside walls sporting naked breeze block. Having discovered an old milk yard tucked away behind some flats and shops in south east London, their long-held desire to build a highly unconventional family home and workspace begins. But the choice of unorthodox materials proves challenging and costly. The yard remains untouched for over a year until they meet Romas and Remi, a young firm of builders, who boldly decide to take on the challenge of building it for just £300k. As the shed-like house takes shape, Tracy and Steve are determined to keep faith with the minimalist industrial design they’ve set their hearts on.

Meanwhile Miss Postern thinks she has found the perfect poster boy for her Stand Up to Bullies campaign when disabled pupil Dean starts at the school. However things are not as simple as they seem.

In January 2003, on a day known as ‘White Friday’, an enormous snowstorm brought the M11 motorway to a standstill and left drivers stranded in their cars for 18 hours. In the media storm that followed, the Highways Agency was heavily criticised for failing to prepare for snow and ice.

GP Peter Berkin and his wife Chard, an alternative medicine practitioner, have decided to build a new home at the bottom of their garden. The problem is, right from the start they can’t agree on any part of the design – even the basic shape. Peter is a serial hobbyist who, according to his wife, never finishes anything. He wants the new house to feature a workshop where he can build a plane. He wants the house to be round. Chard however wants it to be square and practical. Peter aims to spend £400K, Chard wants to keep the budget around £200K. With Peter building as much of the house as he can himself, helped by his mates, and Chard taking control of the money and schedule, it looks like a recipe for disaster. As the house slowly goes up, round and complete with plane workshop, it’s crunch time. Even if it ever gets finished, will Chard be willing to live in it?

As Scotland votes to decide its future, this one-off comedy mockumentary turns the spotlight on a nation poised on the brink between triumph and disaster. Created, written by and starring Jack Docherty, Scotland in a Day focuses on all kinds of life north of the border. Featuring a range of comic characters captured ‘self-shot’ style as they document ‘Scotland’s Day of Destiny’, there are passionate Yes voters, out and out Unionists, and those who can’t help flip-flopping on which way to cast their vote. All Scottish life is here: pensioners, toddlers, deep-thinkers, nutters, landowners, entrepreneurs and party animals – everyone from the passionately political to characters doing their best to avoid the big issues.

When it comes to hanging onto their jobs, there’s nothing the Greybridge staff won’t resort to.

Alex Polizzi, champion of small businesses, finds fixes for the critical issues that kill so many companies. In this episode, Alex looks at trading with the big boys as she meets the Keebles, a family of farmers turned sausage producers whose survival relies heavily on the supermarkets that sell their goods. Like many small producers, however, they often feel powerless in that relationship. Privileged access to Morrisons’ food-development kitchens reveals some interesting results, and Alex uncovers some secrets behind the layout of Tesco shelves. Can Alex get a small company like Heck to survive on the shelves of the supermarket and realise their dream of being the UK’s number one premium brand?

An army of workers oversee and make repairs to the M6, the UK’s major arterial motorway. With the need to keep the heavy traffic flowing at all times competing with the constant need for maintenance, it is a battle to stop it all grinding to a halt. Roadworks are often scheduled during the night when the motorway is at its quietest, to the ire of local residents Jim and Alan who live just 20 metres from a stretch of road where repairs are taking place. Meanwhile, safety inspectors working the graveyard shift go on the lookout for heavy-freight truckers breaking the rules.

But with the zoo expanding beyond their control and Lucy proving obstinate, Lizzie takes matters into her own hands. In Upton, Reverend Webb conspires to find out what George is up to.

Product designer Rebecca Sturrock has returned to her family home in Cornwall, with her partner Gregory Kewish and a highly ambitious plan. Together they will transform a small, damp, single-storey bungalow into a cutting edge home to share with their twin three-year-old daughters – all for just £80,000. The design is radical, to reinforce the walls of the old bungalow and put an entirely new living space on top to take advantage of the views. The extra floor will be built entirely of super thick wooden panels engineered in Germany. The two-ton panels are normally assembled by a crew of specialist installers, but remarkably, due to their miniscule budget, Rebecca and Gregory are determined to do it all themselves. With rain and wind hammering the site however, it soon becomes dangerously clear that Gregory and Rebecca have bitten off more than they can chew.

Comedy series set in a secondary school. Mr Gunn views the impending parents’ evening at Greybridge in a whole new light when he discovers that one of his pupils may well be his son. Desperate to be the father the boy never had (apart from his current father), Gunn sets about trying to make his boy’s school days as joyous as possible, while Mr Church and Mr Martin battle to make sure Gunn’s hot gossip is spread far and wide. A meeting with their pupils’ parents also presents challenges for the rest of the Greybridge staff: Miss Postern is struggling to stop everyone eyeing her cleavage, Ms Baron is attempting to dodge the event altogether, Mr Barber is desperate to master his errant leaf blower and everyone is trying to avoid missing the final of The Great British Bake Off.

Documentary celebrating the 50th anniversary of one of Scotland’s great landmarks, the Forth Road Bridge. The programme charts the memories of the people who built the bridge, the biggest of its kind in Europe at the time, as well as those who ran the Forth ferries that stopped running when it opened in 1964.

Alex Polizzi, champion of small businesses, returns with a new series. This time she is finding fixes for the critical issues that kill so many companies. In this episode, Alex looks at exporting. Six years ago it was Paul Walker’s dream to set up his very own microbrewery in the heart of the Devon countryside. But his dream has turned into a nightmare; finances are spiralling out of control and family life is suffering. A taste test at Sharp’s Brewery ruffles some feathers and a trip to Paris reveals interesting opportunities inherent within brand Britain. Can Alex capitalise on the growing popularity of British real ales and show a small firm how to shape up in order to ship out?

Applying the latest technology, using surveillance filming and working with the UK’s top behaviourists, Dogs: Their Secret Lives looks into the minds of our dogs and meets three troubled pets – Max, the spinning German shepherd, compulsive bus-chasing collie Biscuit, and Roxy the Staffordshire bull terrier, who’s terrified of the great outdoors – to find out what could be at the root of their problems and how to help them. Mark Evans, the former chief vet at the RSCPA, explores the latest brain scanning experiments, meets dogs with incredible learning abilities and finds out about the latest medications as he investigates the challenges facing the 21st-century dog.

Drama series based on the true story of the Mottershead family who, in the face of staunch opposition and huge personal sacrifice, founded Chester Zoo in the 1930s. Frustrated by living with his wife and two daughters under his parents’ roof and tormented by his war trauma, George decides to change his life and put a bit of beauty back into the world. Driven by his unique love of animals and unable to stand by while an unwanted squirrel monkey and a camel are put down in the quarantine bay at the docks, George houses the animals in his parents’ backyard. His youngest daughter, June, immediately falls in love with them, but Lucy, his mother, quickly loses patience with George’s state of mind.

When Terry tries to make a quick profit selling grit salt, Lyndsay realises she needs to keep her eye on him. She would love to get him to slow down, but as the team gathers for the staff Christmas party, it is clear that retirement is the last thing on his mind.

When Miss Postern sets up a careers workshop, it seems her slogan ‘Which Way Now?’ applies as much to her as it does her pupils, not least because the guest speaker is her old teacher training colleague (and now bestselling children’s author) Fenella Forbes. But at least things are looking up for one member of staff, as it seems Mr Martin is about to launch a successful pop career.

In the mid-19th century the Royal Navy was in crisis as sailors fell prey to sexually-transmitted diseases. The government brought in draconian laws to detain and forcibly treat women suspected of being prostitutes. Mark Horton reveals how solving the greatest scientific puzzle of the 18th century, determining a ship’s exact position at sea, meant Greenwich became the epicentre of global sea navigation.

With no room for romance on the dairy farm, Kate leaves her beloved calves at home and heads for some social time at college. But her mum Lesley discovers that the calves are ill. Kate rushes home to care for them but can she nurse them all back to health? And, back at work on the farm, with a beast of a hangover, Robbie has bad news for his mum sue from the accountant.

However, when Kenny goes undercover, there’s a bitter pill to swallow: he discovers life-saving medicines out of stock and staff over-worked and under-appreciated. So when a dedicated delivery driver is moved to tears by the job, Kenny’s forced to consider if he has more to worry about than the bottom line.

Amazing Spaces: Shed of the Year (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 7th August 2014)

As the competition to find Britain’s best shed reaches its climax, George Clarke and his fellow judges look at the final groups of shortlisted sheds battling it out for a place in the grand final. George also visits last year’s winner: an upside down boat shed. The Normal sheds prove anything but, with one of the smallest discos in the world up against a Dad’s Army themed shed complete with air raid siren, as well as a 1970s amusement park in a shed with a 12-foot working Ferris wheel outside. The judges also cast their eyes over the most pleasurable category in the competition, the Pub Shed, before they face the near impossible task of deciding which of them most deserves the overall prize of Shed of the Year 2014.

First Time Farmers returns for a new series, lifting the lid on the lives of 12 ambitious young farmers from across Britain. Some have had their careers mapped out since birth, inheriting family farms built by generations. Some have branched out to straddle careers as builders and even estate agents. Others are becoming skilled in agriculture from scratch with almost no farming background. They’re all balancing farmyard responsibilities with the life of an average fun-loving twenty-something. This episode meets three feisty young farmers from Herefordshire. Twenty-three-year-old dairy farmer and student Kate is a blonde bombshell. She doesn’t look like a stereotypical farmer but she loves cows.
