UK TV programmes to watch this week : 30/06/2018

Great Rail Restorations with Peter Snow (Channel 4 | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 4th July 2018)

In the series finale to this unique restoration project, all four carriages are brought together to create a bespoke ‘Time Train’, representing 100 years of railway history. The Time Train will run on the beautiful Llangollen Railway. This means that first off three of the carriages have to make their own epic journeys to get there. Once in the Llangollen, the carriages are coupled up, and Peter – decked out in boiler suit and cap – drives the steam locomotive. Henry Cole joins chef Ben Mason in the kitchen, preparing a celebratory lunch for everyone to enjoy, seated in the luxurious surroundings of the Pullman dining car. At the end of a unique experience, Peter states: ‘Not only is my tummy a bit full after that excellent lunch but I must admit my old heart’s a bit stirred too. What our restorers have achieved is something truly extraordinary.’.

Secrets of the National Trust with Alan Titchmarsh (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 4th July 2018)

Alan Titchmarsh reveals the history, human stories and the hidden treasures of Britain’s historical estates. This spectacular mansion spread out over a stunning 900 acres of Staffordshire was built by a mixture of courage, creativity and brotherly love.

In this episode, a family restores one of only two surviving coaches used by Queen Victoria. The carriage has been rotting in a car park for decades. But now owner Stephen Middleton is putting his heart and soul into a restoration fit for a queen. Helped by his wife Ying, and teenage daughter Honey, Stephen uncovers a hidden gold step and an early gas light in the roof. Peter keeps a particular beady eye on the work, telling Stephen, ‘Queen Victoria will be turning in her grave if you don’t get this right.’ And Henry Cole investigates how engineers met Queen Victoria’s demands for a smooth ride.

Building Britain’s Canals (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 29th June 2018)

Documentary series in which historian Dan Jones uncovers the stories behind three of Britain’s canals. Dan examines the creation of arguably the prettiest of the country’s waterways, the Kennet and Avon Canal. It came into being thanks to the genius of a young engineer named John Rennie, whose inspiration and innovations created a canal that linked Bristol and London.

The Yorkshire Dales and the Lakes (more4 | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 19th June 2018)

The show that looks at life in the national parks of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales returns for a new series. In the Lakes, champion sheep breeder Arnold Lancaster prepares his flock for the famous Westmorland County Show. In the Dales, the church bells at St Bartholomew’s remain silent after their belfry has fallen into disrepair. Locals arrange a fund raiser to get the bells ringing again. And dog trainer John Halstad prepares his dog Wren for a Dales trial.

Luxury and glamour are at the heart of this episode, as the series jumps forward 100 years to 1960. The restoration project this time is a rusting and tired Pullman dining car, one of the very last batch to be made in Britain. The dedicated restoration team at Tyseley Engineering Works in Birmingham must transform both the dining car while getting the wreck of a kitchen back to working order. There’s heavy engineering to do, as well as meticulous attention to detail needed. Peter’s third driving lesson sees him grappling with reading signals, while still keeping the fire burning and the steam at the correct pressure. Henry Cole delves into the history of catering on the railways.

The Space Shuttle: Triumph and Tragedy (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 11th June 2018)

Following the Challenger disaster, the Shuttle was saved by the fall of the Soviet Union, as America worried that Russian scientists would defect to rogue states and advance their own space projects. President Clinton was then persuaded to use the Shuttles to supply Russia’s Mir space station. This cooperation eventually led to the creation of the International Space Station.

This holiday-themed episode visits the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, as an enchanting wooden carriage from the very dawn of the railway age – 1864 – is restored. In its heyday, the carriage transported Victorian holidaymakers to the posh seaside resorts on the Isle of Wight, but it was scrapped in 1920 and converted into a holiday chalet. The team prepare to convert it back into a carriage featuring two second class compartments and a first class salon, with rich blue velvet handmade upholstery and carefully crafted period features. Peter Snow goes for his second driving lesson. And Henry Cole explores how the railways were responsible for bringing seaside holidays to the masses.

Residents of the community around Grenfell Tower tell an extraordinary story, 150 years in the making, of how their borough became the most unequal place in Britain.

Suffragettes with Lucy Worsley (BBC 1/HD | 8:30pm to 10:00pm | Monday 4th June 2018)

Documentary, presented by Lucy Worsley, which uses dramatised testimony to tell the story of a group of working-class women conducting a dangerous campaign for the vote and the attempts by the state to stop them. Lucy explores the actions of these women as their campaign becomes more and more dangerous, and she has access to an amazing range of artefacts, from hunger-striking medals to defused bombs and private letters between the government and the press. The decisive and largely negative role that members of Parliament played is explored, as is that of the police, both in the ways in which the suffragettes’ demonstrations were handled and the covert and sometimes violent tactics that were used against them. As the actions of the suffragettes became increasingly extreme, it would take a world-changing event to stop their campaign in its tracks and allow some form of equality at the ballot box.

The Space Shuttle: Triumph and Tragedy (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 4th June 2018)

Documentary about the iconic spacecraft. NASA engineers reveal how they pushed technology to new limits when they created the Shuttle. Historian Roland White suggests the original intention for the Shuttle was to use it to carry out spying missions. And NASA’s Wayne Hale remembers the Challenger disaster.

Mackintosh: Glasgow’s Neglected Genius (BBC 2 Scotland & BBC iPlayer only | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 5th June 2018)

Documentary in which Glasgow artist Lachlan Goudie examines the life, work and legacy of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Scotland’s most celebrated architect and designer. The film examines Mackintosh’s iconic buildings, notably the Glasgow School of Art, as well as his own personal story. Little known at home, his work found favour on the continent and he continued to create remarkable pieces of art into his later years despite struggling for work and having to endure real poverty.

In a first for railway restoration, teams of restoration experts from across Britain take four of the most iconic carriages ever to run on the railways and restore them to their former glory. The carriages come from different eras, spanning 100 years of railway travel – ranging from a wooden coach from 1864, on the Isle of Wight, to a royal coach used by Queen Victoria, and a glamorous Pullman dining car from 1960. The show is presented by Peter Snow and Henry Cole. While Peter keeps across the ups and downs of each restoration, Henry explores what it was like to be a passenger during different eras of rail travel. The first episode comes from the stunning Vale of Llangollen in North Wales, where a passionate team of restorers try to bring a dilapidated carriage from 1912 back to life. The carriage was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley – who went on to build The Flying Scotsman.

Secrets of the Chocolate Factory: Inside Cadbury (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 7th June 2018)

Documentary celebrating the history of one of Britain’s iconic institutions. For almost 200 years, Cadbury has been the home of chocolate, making a staggering 350 tonnes of milk chocolate a day. It’s far more than just a factory as from the beginning it set out to build a magical place for its employees. However, it’s not always been a sweet story.

As Storm Eleanor strikes a fly-away plastic bag causes a power outage trapping three trains, in Hungerford a falling tree hits a Penzance-bound service, and engineers work through the night to fix a crack that has been discovered in a set of points near Oxford.

Two-part documentary charting the highs and lows of British Airways as it approaches its centenary. Former pilots, crew and customers reveal their tales, combined with incredible archive footage. Stories includes the advent of luxury flight, the world’s most expensive advertising campaign, getting caught up in the Gulf War, and the aborted take-off of Heathrow T5.

Ambulance (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 10th May 2018)

In an average week, crews across the West Midlands respond to 30 stabbings. Pete and Matt, a specialist trauma team, are called to treat the victim of a brutal knife attack. They carry out urgent medical intervention at the scene in a bid to save the man’s life. Paramedics Christine and Chris start their day shift with a man who has collapsed in Worcester town centre after a suspected drug overdose. They give him an opiate antidote to stop him slipping into a coma, but the effect is only temporary. With A&E departments across the region busy, ambulance crews face waiting times of up to two hours before they can hand over their patients. When Jo and Tracey are called to 90-year-old Dennis, who has been vomiting, they want to save him from the inevitable delay at hospital. But GP surgeries are under pressure too. and they can’t get through to his doctor. They have no option but to take Dennis to hospital and join the queue.

Britain’s Great Cathedrals, with Tony Robinson (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 11th May 2018)

Tony Robinson tells the turbulent history of six of Britain’s cathedrals. Winchester is the longest medieval cathedral in northern Europe. It is also one of Britain’s oldest cathedrals and a monument to the wealth and power of the Normans. Kings and queens have been christened, married and laid to rest here.

Portillo’s Hidden History of Britain (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 11th May 2018)

Michael Portillo unlocks the doors to four extraordinary abandoned locations. Imber Village was evacuated in 1943 to be used as a WWII training ground. Despite promises that the residents could return after the war, the village remains in the hands of the military today, and has been used for training against the IRA and the Taliban.

She asks the current chief constable whether, with his own controversial background, he is fit to lead.

Series in which weatherman Barra Best voyages around the Northern Irish coastline, meeting those for whom the sea is a huge part of their lives. His journey begins at Lough Foyle, after which he makes his way to the picturesque harbour of Portbradden.

Behind-the-scenes documentary series about one of the UK’s busiest transport hubs and the western rail network it serves. A track circuit failure closes Platform 5 which is used by numerous high-speed trains, British Transport Police are out in force as rival Oxford and Millwall fans use the network, and a young man is seen on CCTV walking dangerously close to the edge of the platform.

West Midlands Ambulance Service sees a spike in trauma cases and must manage problems of the winter NHS crisis that has left patients lying in the corridors of Royal Stoke Hospital.

Britain’s Great Cathedrals, with Tony Robinson (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 4th May 2018)

History series. Tony Robinson tells the turbulent history of six of Britain’s cathedrals. Liverpool cathedral is the Church of England’s newest cathedral, and it’s the largest in Britain. The cathedral was designed in the Gothic style by Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed the red telephone box. It took 74 years to build and was paid for by money donated from the people of Liverpool.

Portillo’s Hidden History of Britain (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 4th May 2018)

Documentary series. Michael Portillo unlocks the doors to four extraordinary abandoned locations. Since it opened 400 years ago, Shepton Mallet prison has seen thousands of prisoners, numerous executions and countless escape attempts. It has been home to gangsters, and during the Second World War a safe house for Britain’s most precious historic documents such as the Magna Carta.

Documentary series. Michael Portillo unlocks the doors to four extraordinary abandoned locations. For almost a century, Orford Ness was owned by the MOD, a lens into a bygone era of secrets, spies and superpowers. When it closed in 1993, its buildings were still shrouded in secrecy.

Documentary series. John Prescott explores the factories making some of the region’s best-loved foods. John Prescott explores the factories making some of the region’s best-loved foods. Whitakers Chocolates produces 2m confections a day, while the machines at Heck! Sausages can create 1,200 bangers a minute. Prescott works alongside the staff at both factories to learn how it’s done.

Still Game (BBC 1/HD | 9:30pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 12th April 2018)

Comedy series in which lifelong friends cope with everything modern life has to throw at them. Isa’s pulse is set racing as a long-lost companion returns to Craiglang from Hollywood. As Isa and Callum get reacquainted, she has to fend off stiff competition, especially from one particularly persistent gooseberry. Meanwhile, Boabby decides it’s time to get a car and learn to drive – but it doesn’t come easily, and he soon terrifies the life out of anyone who takes him for a lesson. As he quickly runs out of willing instructors, Callum steps in. He is a qualified driving instructor and comes to the rescue with the promise of a lesson in a local car park. Also trying to better their lot is Methadone Mick, who has enrolled in an online course that he doesn’t want to reveal to anyone, for fear that they will laugh at him. The thing is, Mick doesn’t have a computer, so he relies on Isa, Jack and Victor’s good will. Pushed to their limits, Jack and Victor demand to know what the course is.
