The World’s Most Beautiful Railway (more 4 | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 26th August 2019)

Documentary about Scotland’s railway network, meeting people who work on it as well as the steam enthusiasts who safeguard these famous routes. In the first edition, 200 lucky passengers board A4 steam locomotive Union of South Africa as it makes a farewell tour after 50 years of service.

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 27th August 2019)

RNLI volunteers in Pembrokeshire, including brothers Hal, Will and Ben, race to the scene when a plane makes an emergency crash landing on one of Wales’ busiest beaches. In Jersey, the St Catherine crew are pushed to the brink when they search for a man who has gone missing at sea in the middle of a fierce winter storm. On the Wirral, the crew of Hoylake launch their specialist rescue hovercraft and race the incoming tide to try and save a horse, which has become stuck fast in the mud and at risk from drowning.

Sink or Swim (Channel 4/HD | 9:30pm to 10:30pm | Tuesday 27th August 2019)

A team of celebrities train for a cross-channel relay swim in support of Stand Up to Cancer, under the coaching of Olympic swimmer Keri-Anne Payne and adventurer Ross Edgley. The team consists of athletes Linford Christie, Tessa Sanderson and Greg Rutherford, Coronation Street’s Sair Khan, The Last Leg’s Alex Brooker, TOWIE’s James Argent and Georgia Kousoulou, Blue singer Simon Webbe, Love Island’s Wes Nelson, Hollyoaks actress Rachel Adedeji, and presenter Diane Louise Jordan.

Train Truckers (Yesterday | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 29th August 2019)

Documentary following the exploits of a family-run crew of heavy-haulage specialists as they transport the heaviest, longest and most precious locomotives around the world. Terry and Jason have been called in to move legendary steam locomotive Britannia. The 68-year-old vehicle has undergone a major restoration in Crewe and is scheduled to start running at the Severn Valley Railway.

The World’s Most Luxurious Train (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 30th August 2019)

A look at top-end trains, such as South Africa’s famous Blue Train. A five-star hotel on wheels, guests pay upwards of £2,600 per ticket for the 40-hour journey from Pretoria to Cape Town, enjoying 24-hour butler service, bespoke linen and a soak in their own private bath. Another South African luxury train, Rovos Rail, offers a game drive. In Russia, the Golden Eagle offer a Trans-Siberian train journey, which crosses nine time zones on its two-week journey. The Presidential Train offers a luxury daytrip through the Portuguese countryside, where guests are served a meal created by a Michelin-starred chef.

Celebrity 5 Go Motorhoming Unpacked (Channel 5/HD | 10:00pm to 11:05pm | Friday 30th August 2019)

Companion series revisiting the 2017 motorhome adventure of celebrities Lesley Joseph, Don Warrington, Melvyn Hayes, Nick Heyward and Cleo Rocos as they made their way across the stunning Welsh landscape. Lesley visits her old friend Cleo to reminisce about their time together on the trip, during which the freedom of the open road and the cosy living conditions brought these celebrity strangers closer together, as they visited off-the-beaten-track waterfalls and priories in the depths of south Wales. With the benefit of hindsight, Cleo and Lesley spill the beans amid some previously unseen footage.

On August 14,2018, the Ponte Morandi in Genoa collapsed, sending 27 vehicles plummeting to the valley below with the loss of 43 lives. This investigation into the disaster tells the stories of people on the bridge that day and examines what caused the road viaduct to fail so catastrophically.

The Great Train Robbery: The Hidden Tapes (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 12th August 2019)

With access to tapes that have been hidden for over 40 years, this documentary goes behind the legend of the 1963 heist to uncover the true story of the crime of the century. Through tape recordings made by one of the key masterminds, the film explores the truth about the background to the robbery, and the audacious planning to carry it off, as well as revealing how one of the men managed to escape the police and live off his share of the loot until he died a few years ago.

Revolutions: The Ideas that Changed the World (BBC 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 13th August 2019)

Jim Al-Khalili presents a look at the history behind the smartphone, discovering how the Roman army sent messages over long distances using fire and examining the advances made by Samuel Morse, Alexander Graham Bell’s favour and Guglielmo Marconi. The programme also examines how the inventions of scientist and movie star Hedy Lamarr has been used to increase network capacity.

Celebrity 5 Go Barging (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 10:15pm | Friday 16th August 2019)

After a death-defying crossing of the Edstone aqueduct, the longest cast iron example in England, Michael Buerk and Shaun Williamson visit a gin distillery to make genuine Elizabethan hooch, while Anita Harris goes foraging for herbs and flavours. Then they meet back at the barges for a gin-tasting session, pitching Shaun’s `Bottom’s Up” against Michael’s `Goodnight Sweet Prince”. Then, alongside fellow travellers John Prescott and Amanda Barrie they head up to Stratford and journey’s end at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, where Shaun can finally achieve his life’s ambition of playing Stratford.

Crossrail: Where Did It All Go Wrong? (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Saturday 3rd August 2019)

Crossrail is Europe’s biggest engineering project, a new train line linking east and west London that was meant to open in December last year, but it is years behind schedule, billions over budget and dogged by all kinds of problems. This documentary tracks the troubled project from the very beginning, featuring interviews with former workers, politicians and transport experts, as well as people who were promised that Crossrail would bring huge benefits.

Brighton: 50 Years of Gay (BBC 4/HD | 7:30pm to 8:00pm | Sunday 4th August 2019)

Simon Fanshawe marks the 50th anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act 1967, which which decriminalised private homosexual acts between men aged over 21. The writer and broadcaster examines this landmark change in the law and reveals the story of the fight for gay equality through the colourful history of his home town of Brighton.

Portillo: The Trouble with the Tories (Channel 5/HD | 10:00pm to 11:15pm | Thursday 8th August 2019)

Part two of two. The former cabinet minister’s assessment of the Conservative Party concentrates on Brexit, and how the party has brought itself to the brink of political destruction over arguably the biggest political crisis in Britain since the Second World War. With contributions from Boris Johnson, William Hague, Michael Gove, Michael Heseltine, Norman Lamont and Tony Blair, Portillo considers how splits in the party over widened since the referendum, and how Parliament struggled to deliver on the British people’s vote to leave the EU.

Celebrity 5 Go Barging (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:20pm | Friday 9th August 2019)

In Warwickshire, Michael Buerk, Shaun Williamson, Amanda Barrie, Anita Harris and John Prescott settle into new boats, then head out to conquer the Grand Union Canal. First, however, there is the small question of the 21-lock flight at Hatton as the five meet some of the volunteers who restore the locks and keep then functioning. Amanda takes a detour to Warwick Castle in search of her ancestors, while Sean and John, discover the unique joys of sheep-racing. Deep into Shakespeare country, Michael tries to find the famous local pies he remembers from his youth.

Britain’s Most Historic Towns (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Saturday 15th June 2019)

Alice Roberts visits Canterbury to explore the Plantagenet era, when the powerful house held the throne between 1154 and 1485. She discovers the secrets of the city’s cathedral, a centre of ecclesiastical power and also the site of the shocking murder of Thomas Becket. She also discovers the lasting impact of the Black Death and joins a modern-day pilgrimage in medieval garb. Aerial archaeologist Ben Robinson provides a bird’s-eye view of how the religious institutions of the era still dominate the city’s topography.

Top Gear (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Sunday 16th June 2019)

Freddie Flintoff, Chris Harris and Paddy McGuinness take over as the latest hosting team of the motoring show. Their first episode takes them to Ethiopia, where they test cars to see how they can endure in the searing heat. Back at the track, Chris puts the Ferrari 488 Pista and McLaren 600LT through their paces.

Great Canal Journeys (Channel 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Sunday 16th June 2019)

Part two of two. Timothy West and Prunella Scales’ final journey takes them through Vietnam’s Mekong Delta and across the border into Cambodia. They visit the capital city of Phenom Penh, and conclude their travels at Angkor Wat, an ancient temple built by the clever use of canals.

Thatcher: A Very British Revolution (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 17th June 2019)

The concluding part of the documentary looks at how Margaret Thatcher’s leadership style and the issues of Europe and the poll tax split her cabinet and created public anger, leading to her downfall. Protests against the poll tax resulted in violence in central London, but more damagingly there was widespread disenchantment in Tory strongholds across the country. Fractures emerge with senior cabinet colleagues, worsened by her European policy and Geoffrey Howe’s resignation leads to a leadership challenge.

The Thames: Britain’s Great River with Tony Robinson (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 18th June 2019)

Reaching central London, the actor and presenter boards an industrial working ship on the Thames, learning it is a route not without risks as ships must squeeze under bridges at high tide and avoid running aground at low tide. At the Chelsea embankment, Tony explores the Physic Gardens where early botanical remedies were created from exotic plants brought in by river from all over the world. On the south bank, he goes mudlarking, scouring the shore at low tide for objects discarded by revellers past, before getting a bird’s-eye-view of the river from the Shard. Tony’s final stop is Tower Bridge.

The Yorkshire Steam Railway: All Aboard (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 21st June 2019)

Under pressure to bring in extra revenue now that the somewhat challenging season is nearing its end, the North York Moors Railway team decides to put on a special `curry train” night together with a massive bash for Halloween. Visitors and staff alike put in the effort to make it a night to remember, though proceedings are threatened when the lights in the carriages suddenly stop working. The Bishop of Wakefield comes to bless Eric Treacy, an engine that has been through a £500,000 overhaul taking over two years.

Historical series exploring how Britain, and Liverpool in particular, was bombarded for eight days in May 1941, through the stories of people caught up in the events. Michael Buerk, Angellica Bell and Rob Bell follow Margaret Johnson, a mother of six whose children could not be evacuated from the city. Mary Lawson, was a promising film star who was in Liverpool when the raids began. And they assess Churchill’s morale-boosting tour of bombed Britain.

The Great Flood of London (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 28th May 2019)

Documentary series about the battle against climate change. For decades, London trusted that its sophisticated Thames Barrier would keep it safe from water. But as sea levels rise and rainfall increases, London’s sleeping giant is facing new threats.

The Blitz: Britain on Fire (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 28th May 2019)

Historical series exploring eight days in Liverpool in May 1941 through the stories of people caught up in the events. Matron Gertrude Riding and Dr Leonard Findlay ran a hospital with a busy maternity ward and were right in the midst of the target zone. In the docks, Captain Howard Kinley’s bomb-laden ship caught fire, and 350 tonnes of high explosive went up.

The Blitz: Britain on Fire (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 29th May 2019)

Historical series exploring eight days in Liverpool in May 1941 through the stories of people caught up in the events. Mary Lawson’s rash decision to stay above ground during the bombing had serious consequences, but the city ultimately emerged from this terrible time wounded but not defeated.

The Yorkshire Steam Railway: All Aboard (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 31st May 2019)

Documentary series going behind the scenes of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. For the annual Gala Festival, the NYMR plans to swap their precious Q6 engine with another from the Severn Valley, but there is a crack in the engine box and no-one to fix it on short notice.

Kevin McCloud follows a group of pioneering self-builders creating their own homes in Oxfordshire. In this episode, engineers Sean and Dianna plan to build an upside-down house. Having bedrooms on the ground floor means the first floor can be open plan, to make the most of the view out across the fields.But Dianna is given an unexpected offer to work abroad which upsets their carefully-laid plans. On Plot 10, Garrie, who has always dreamed of building his own home, is finally taking the opportunity. But the stakes are high as his wife Sue has a disability with health issues. Their home is the largest on the street and packed with expensive technology, including an internal lift. But will the investment of time, energy and money improve Sue’s quality of life, or will the stress and delays prove too much to bear?

New and first on More4: In Brixham, South Devon, trawlerman Dave Driver sets out to sea on his boat in search of cuttlefish. Sea fishing is one of the most dangerous occupations in Britain. Dave and his crew travel out 25 miles from the shore for an 18-hour shift. On the southern edge of Bodmin Moor, Mark and Isobelle Delbridge, one of Cornwall’s youngest tenant farming couples, are determined to make a success of their new dairy farm. They are keeping things traditional and their hand-delivered bottle milk is growing in popularity. On the northern reaches of Dartmoor National Park, horseback farmers Crispin Alford, his wife Diana and son Steve are preparing to sell their hill ponies. And back in Brixham, there’s a visit to a guillemot colony.

In an epic self-build project five years in the making, Kevin McCloud follows ten pioneers as they construct neighbouring homes to create an entire street. Twenty-five-year-olds Chris and Roxie take a risk building their first home together using an untested flatpack construction system which sees 380 plywood boxes bolted together. It proves repetitive work, especially painting the hundreds of wooden cladding units, and the stress and strain of the project threatens the young couple’s relationship. Peter and Anita and their two teenagers live locally, but have outgrown their current house. Father and son hope to bond while building a dream family home with space for all. But the process isn’t all plain sailing.

On the southern edge of Dartmoor, sheep farmers Jess and Russell Steer prepare for their first trip to Devon’s historic Widecombe fair. Near Exmoor, farmer Cyril Cole is determined to give back to the land he once farmed.

Kevin McCloud follows 10 pioneering households hoping to build new homes, and a brand-new street, as part of Britain’s most extensive self-build project. In this episode, Paul and Blanka and their two children attempt to construct an eco-home. Paul puts his career as a human rights lawyer on hold to build an ambitious three bed sustainable home, using natural, chemical-free materials, and for no more than a £160,000 – including the price of the plot. However, the project ends up costing the family more than they bargained for, and not just financially.
