How the Victorians Built Britain (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Saturday 4th January 2020)

Michael Buerk returns with more stories of how Britain was transformed during the Victorian era, beginning by looking at the development of the railway network during the era. Michael hops on board an original Victorian locomotive at Tanfield Railway and discovers the role this former coal track played in the development of the national railway. He also learns about Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s bid to secure Bristol’s future, and his creation of the fastest engine in the world.

Call the Midwife (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Sunday 5th January 2020)

The return of the period drama about midwives and nurses in London’s East End, picking up the story in January 1965. After dealing with a power cut at the maternity home, Fred follows an unusual sound and finds a newborn baby abandoned in a dustbin. Meanwhile, Dr Turner and Nurse Crane must deal with an alarming outbreak of diphtheria, and Sister Julienne receives news of an ambitious redevelopment programme that potentially threatens Nonnatus House. Starring Jenny Agutter and Stephen McGann.

Great British Railway Journeys (BBC 2/HD | 6:30pm to 7:00pm | Monday 6th January 2020)

Armed with an interwar Bradshaw’s guide, Michael Portillo explores the Britain of the 1930s as he sets out on another adventure. Beginning just outside Newcastle in Jarrow, Michael uncovers the desperation that led 200 men to march 300 miles to Westminster in order to petition the government for work. The first leg of his journey ends Spennymoor, Co Durham, where he meets the son of a miner who became one of the most famous 20th-century artists of the region.

Michael Portillo is in Northumbria en route to the Highlands, heading to Kielder Forest to discover what lay behind a national initiative to plant one of the largest manmade woodlands in Europe. Crossing the border to Scotland, Michael arrives in the weaving town of Hawick to visit Lovat Mill, where, in the 1930s, tweed was big business, and also goes to the movies, sitting in the front stalls at the Dominion cinema in Morningside.

Silent Witness (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 7th January 2020)

Part one of two. Nikki is called in when a private jet crashes in a forest outside London, and finds herself forced to be the bearer of bad news when she learns that the casualties include a former US ambassador who is also an old friend of Matt’s. Meanwhile, Thomas investigates the suspicious suicide of a successful businessman, and uncovers an unexpected connection to the plane crash – which suggests the two cases are linked, and that the plane may have been deliberately sabotaged as part of a coordinated attack.

Michael Portillo reaches the Westerglen Transmitting Station in Falkirk, before visiting Gleneagles and Berry Town on route to his final stop on this leg, the city of Dundee.

Part two of two. Nikki and the Lyell team continue to investigate the plane crash, ruling out an explosion and engine failure. The investigation takes a turn when they discover a connection to a sinister online forum. Meanwhile, Nikki’s partner Matt is grieving following the death of his close friend, putting their relationship under strain. Starring Emilia Fox, David Caves and Richard Lintern.

Michael Portillo travels from Dundee to Aberdeen, stopping off at Glamis Castle, where the Queen Mother grew up, and making an excursion into the Eastern Highlands.

Death in Paradise (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 9th January 2020)

The return of the whodunit set on the Caribbean island of Saint Marie, where the sun shines all day and it seems half the residents are killers-in-waiting. And so it appears this week as the locals set out to celebrate the New Year – only for the festivities to be cut short when a masked man stabs a woman in her own home, providing Detective Inspector Jack Mooney and his team with yet another murder to solve. Ardal O’Hanlon stars as the Irish detective – although as has been widely reported, he will soon be leaving the lead role – with guest appearances by Adrian Edmondson, Nina Wadia and Samuel West.

Great British Railway Journeys (BBC 2/HD | 6:30pm to 7:00pm | Friday 10th January 2020)

Michael Portillo is at Elgin’s port, the coastal town of Lossiemouth, where the Labour Party’s first prime minister James Ramsay MacDonald was born. Nearby, Michael finds a remote boarding school established in the 1930s and famous today both for its unusual ideas and its royal former pupils. His penultimate stop is Inverness, where he uncovers the work of female photographer MEM Donaldson, who documented a Highland way of life that was rapidly disappearing. Michael’s journey ends at Loch Ness, where he joins a Deep Scan research team scouring the deep for signs of the elusive monster.

Secret Scotland (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 10th January 2020)

The comedian traverses the North Coast 500, a 500-mile trip around the northernmost parts of mainland Britain. Beginning in the village of Golspie, Susan travels round the coast to Dunrobin Castle. There, she sees the 189-room property’s clock tower inspired by Big Ben, as well as its very own private train station. Further up the coast, Susan visits the Whaligoe steps, stunningly carved into the dramatic landscape, before getting a taste of the work of a real-life `herring girl”. After stopping off at John O’ Groats, the presenter heads to Dunnet Head for a spot of puffin-watching.

Great Australian Railway Journeys (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Saturday 16th November 2019)

Michael Portillo crosses the south east of Australia from Canberra, the seat of government, to the multi-ethnic heart of its second largest city, Melbourne. Along the way he discovers the history of the Ashes at Melbourne cricket ground, learns about the exploits of outlaw Ned Kelly and visits the home of superstar soprano Dame Nellie Melba. He also rides on the Puffing Billy narrow gauge steam railway, built in 1900, and has a go at shearing a sheep.

Great Canal Journeys (Channel 4/HD | 7:00pm to 8:00pm | Sunday 17th November 2019)

A look back at Timothy West and Prunella Scales’ waterway travels in Scotland – a coast-to-coast adventure that started in Edinburgh and ended on the edge of the North Sea, where monumental equine sculptures now line the route and state-of-the-art boat lifts have replaced the humble lock. The couple also travelled along the Caledonian Canal, which links Scotland’s east and west coasts, was built for ocean-going ships and comes with scenery that is rugged and stunning.

Andrew O’Donnell and Mark Taylor travel from corner to corner of the north coast of the Scottish mainland, going from John O’Groats and Cape Wrath on a tandem.

Canal Boat Diaries (BBC 4/HD | 7:30pm to 8:00pm | Tuesday 19th November 2019)

Robbie Cumming explores the English canal network, beginning with a journey from Shardlow to Etruria Junction, Stoke on Trent, exploring the Trent and Mersey Canal. However, not everything goes to plan, and he will have to deal with a tricky issue with his propeller as well as navigating the complicated locks on the Trent and Mersey Canal.

The World’s Most Scenic Railway Journeys (Channel 5/HD 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 22nd November 2019)

In Norway, camera follow a train journey that begins in the capital Oslo and heads all the way to Bodo inside the Arctic Circle. The first leg is the Dovre line, running from to the remote northern wonderland of Trondheim. Along the way it passes through the vast Gudbrandsdal valley and across the awe-inspiring Dovrefjell mountain plateau. The route stops at the picturesque mountain village of Dombas, before changing to the Rauma railway, which features dramatic fjords opening out along the Rauma river, dotted with some of the country’s most famous landmarks. Narrated by Bill Nighy.

Along the way he hears the story of an enterprising 19th-century Briton with a murky past who made his money growing vines, strikes it lucky in one of the most lucrative goldfields in the world and pays a flying visit to the doctor to hear how patients in remote Western Australia are cared for. He also hears how Edward VIII was caught up in a train accident near Bridgetown and learns about a child migration programme that cast a dark shadow on the history of both the UK and Australia.

Situated in Lochaber, Loch Morar is the deepest loch in Scotland and a place teeming with mystery, while its surrounding mountains are both rugged and remote. Wildlife film-maker Andrew O’Donnell and his friend Mark Taylor explore this stunning wilderness by foot and by packraft.

Bill Nighy narrates a trip through Wales’ highest peaks and deepest valleys. Starting in Pwllheli in the north west, the route heads along the lines that were built during the slate industry’s heyday. At Porthmadog, the journey briefly switches to the reconstructed steam trains of the Welsh Highland National Heritage Railway to Minffordd station. Nearby is the village of Portmeirion, famous for its role in the classic TV series The Prisoner. Rejoining the Cambrian Line, local farmers reveal what the railway means to them, before the route takes in the seaside resort of Aberdovey.

In the Blue Mountains, he learns about people’s relationship to the land from his indigenous guide, before reaching Katoomba, where he rides the steepest railway in the world.

London Calling: Cold War Letters (BBC 4/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 7th November 2019)

On the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, this documentary reveals how for more than 25 years, the BBC gave voice to the silenced people of the former communist state of East Germany by inviting them to secretly write in to a radio show called Letters without Signature. Broadcast on the BBC’s German Service, the programme gave voice to ordinary citizens who wrote about life under the repressive communist regime.

The Fall of the Berlin Wall with John Simpson (BBC 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 7th November 2019)

To mark the 30th anniversary of the collapse of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, John Simpson, the BBC’s longest-serving correspondent, goes back to his reports on what he believes to be the most important story he has ever covered. Back then, John thought the even would change the world for the better, for ever. Three decades on, he looks at how history has actually turned out and whether he was wrong to have been so optimistic.

Gareth Edwards’ Great Welsh Adventure (BBC 1 Wales/HD & BBC iPlayer only | 7:30pm to 8:00pm | Friday 8th November 2019)

Rugby legend Gareth and wife Maureen reach the final leg of their round-Wales adventure by canal, one which has a personal connection for them. The narrowboat novices grew up at opposite ends of the same street in the village of Gwaun-cae-Gurwen, near Neath. As children, they would play in the areas by the derelict canals, but knew very little of them and their history. The Swansea canal and the Neath and Tennant canals reveal a story of industry that once dominated the area, getting coal and iron to the docks. Now virtually impassable, there are plans afoot to give them a new lease of life.

The World’s Most Scenic Railway Journeys (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 8th November 2019)

A stunning journey in New Zealand, through the heart of South Island’s best scenery. It starts in Greymouth, renowned for its coal mining past, moving on to Arthur’s Pass National Park – with its historically important Maori hunting grounds. The train passes through Cass, made famous by Kiwi artist Rita Angus and onwards to the Waimakiriri gorge and its 15 tunnels and four viaducts. Rail engineers recall how the line has been affected by earthquakes before the journey arrives in Christchurch, a city sitting on a volcano. Narrated by Bill Nighy.

Caravanning with Shane Richie (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 8th November 2019)

#The Isle of Wight is where Shane holidayed as a child, and where he began his career, staying in a unique, rock ‘n’ roll-themed caravan complete with its own hot tub. On his first day, Shane revisits his past with a visit to the pier at Sandown, where he did his earliest professional performances. Back at the holiday park, Shane enjoys an evening at the park’s outdoor cinema, meeting both the holidaymakers who have come along and the staff keeping them entertained. He is later joined by TV chef Tony Tobin to forage along the shoreline for edible seaweed.

Timothy West and Prunella Scales share some memories of their canal journeys overseas, including their first trip, which was to France on the Nivernais Canal. Tim is reminded of the time he tried to park his boat in Venice, at St Mark’s Square, and the couple reminisce over a moonlit gondolier trip down the Grand Canal. Having successfully mastered the waterways of Europe, Tim and Pru then set forth on even more ambitious and remote journeys across the world – to India, Canada, Argentina and a trip down the Nile.

An underground city beneath a forest in Northern France built to house 3,000 people, an ice cave under Iceland’s biggest glacier, and a subterranean power station in London.

At South Devon, engineer Ray Lee is working to bring a loco back in to service. There is also a visit to the SS Kingswear paddle steamer In Dartmouth, the oldest vessel of its kind.

The World’s Most Scenic Railway Journeys (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 1st November 2019)

Cameras capture a route through Spain, beginning near Leon, part of the famous north Spanish Pilgrimage, in the Picos de Europa mountains. The railway then runs through the Basque country before the famous Guggenheim Museum greets travellers in Bilbao. In Galicia, the gorges, coastline and sea bridges are a sight for sore eyes, and a speciality cider tour refreshes the train’s guests. The journey ends in Ferrol, a spectacular harbour that has been a major shipbuilding centre for most of its history and has been a key city in many wars. Narrated by Bill Nighy.

Caravanning with Shane Richie (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 1st November 2019)

The presenter visits a vast campsite in North Yorkshire, which has its own theme park and zoo. The place is so big that guests can call for a golf-buggy taxi just to take them to their room. Once, settled in, Shane hops on the cable cars for an aerial view of the park’s rollercoasters and wild animal enclosures. He also explores the local area, taking in a steam train trip from inside the driver’s cabin and a fishing trip out of Whitby. Following in his father’s footsteps as an performer, Shane’s son arrives with his band to perform as the site’s entertainment.

The Great Model Railway Challenge (Channel 5/HD | 6:25pm to 7:30pm | Saturday 19th October 2019)

The three teams in the second semi-final are challenged to build a track based on a blockbuster movie in just three days. The Railmen of Kent recreate the wizarding world of Harry Potter, complete with broomsticks, giant spiders and enchanted cars. Wild card entry Muddle and Go Nowhere base their track on James Bond, while Who’s Counting Rivets pay homage to Jurassic Park with a dinosaur-infested creation..

Saving Lives at Sea (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 22nd October 2019)

RNLI volunteers at Calshot on the south coast race to the rescue of a 180-metre-long cargo ship which has run aground on a sandbank, and is now listing at a dangerous angle. At the most northerly lifeboat station on the British mainland, the crew gets called out to investigate a personal locator beacon which has been set off on a remote stretch of rocky coastline, and in Kinsale, volunteers come to the aid of a horse.

Love in the Countryside (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 22nd October 2019)

Sara Cox helps Welsh shepherd Ioan get a leg up the love ladder, but when he invites three ladies back home, his demanding work threatens to obstruct his shot at romance. Meanwhile, vet George and equine dentist Victoria from https://drlarryfranks.com/ from https://drlarryfranks.com/ are both in the grips of a dating conundrum, sheepdog trainer Katy leaves the remote Cumbrian fells to see if romance will blossom with ex-motorbike champ David, and Sara finds out if any of the rural romantics believe they have found everlasting love in the countryside.

The stories of six epic train journeys, seen through the characters who travel, work and live near them. The first programme rides through Canada’s iconic Rocky Mountaineer train in a jaw-dropping loop from Vancouver to the heart of the Rockies, through some of North America’s most staggering natural beauty, and on to Banff in Alberta. The journey also ventures through the spiral tunnels and shows how to track bears with the National Park rangers. Narrated by Bill Nighy.

The former Pontins bluecoat heads to north devon to stay in a static caravan on a park owned by of one of the biggest holiday park chains in the UK. The park boasts its own entertainment centre, swimming pool, nature reserve and even its own private beach. He is later joined by one of his oldest friends who, just like him, is a former holiday park entertainer. Peter joins Shane on a visit to a theme park with a difference, and the duo attend a D-Day re-enactment at a local beach, complete with vintage jeeps and aircraft.

Documentary exploring the history of the river, and how it has played a pivotal role in London’s development as a major centre for international trade. The first episode focuses on the capital’s docklands, which at their peak, employed more than 30,000 workers. Plus, a look at the construction of bridges, sewers, and the flood barrier.

In Cornwall, a paraglider misjudges his launch and ends up crashing into the sea, while the Redcar crew search for a man who has drifted over a mile offshore in a small toy dinghy.

Sink or Swim (Channel 4/HD | 9:15pm to 10:15pm | Tuesday 17th September 2019)

The day of the cross-channel swim is approaching, and after 12 weeks of gruelling training, the experts decide which of the celebrities is up to the challenge of undertaking a 22-mile relay to France. The team must work together and brave harsh weather and the limits of their own endurance to complete the crossing.

Three teams of modellers are given three days to create masterpieces based on the theme of best-selling book. The Seven Pillars of Wisdom by TE Lawrence (aka Lawrence of Arabia) is the inspiration for the Scarborough Flyers, sci-fi fans the Rail Riders choose HG Wells’ classic War of the Worlds as their muse, while Team Phoenix’s layout is inspired by various tomes by the queen of crime, Agatha Christie. As usual presenters James Richardson and Tim Shaw are joined by expert judges Kathy Millat and Steve Flint.

Celebrity 5 Go Motorhoming Unpacked (Channel 5/HD | 10:15pm to 11:15pm | Friday 20th September 2019)

Leaving Loch Lomond and the midges behind, Lesley Joseph, Don Warrington, Melvyn Hayes, Nick Heyward and Cleo Rocos travel over the sea to Skye via the Glenfinnan Viaduct, a structure made famous by the Harry Potter films. Once on the isle, they are told a tall tale by a kilted Scotsman, almost get blown off the Quiraing and walk in the footsteps of dinosaurs. The excitement isn’t over, as they get to sample scallops straight from the sea. On the east coast of Scotland, volunteers from Dunbar race to save three children trapped in a cave by rising tides, while in the west, the Tobermory crew comes to the aid of a yacht caught in a storm and being forced onto the rocks. In England, the Blyth crew searches for an 80-year-old man who has gone missing after leaving home to look for lobsters on the coast.

The remaining celebrities must face their fears if they are to qualify for the cross-channel swim. They tackle their first night swim in Loch Lomond, enduring darkness and gruelling temperatures. Emotions are running high as the team is pushed to the limit, and each swimmer must decide if they are ready to face the challenge ahead.

Talented teams are tasked to build awe-inspiring miniature wonderlands against the clock, loaded with stunning scenery and spectacular animations, all to a different weekly theme and designed to impress expert judges Steve Flint and Kathy Millatt. Here, the first of eight gruelling, themed rounds sees `The Restless Earth” brought to life. Three teams of enthusiasts set about manufacturing a deluge of volcanoes, earthquakes and other small-scale natural disasters. Presented by James Richardson and Tim Shaw.

Celebrity 5 Go Motorhoming Unpacked (Channel 5/HD | 10:00pm to 11:05pm | Friday 13th September 2019)

Lesley Joseph reminisces about her childhood bucket-and-spade holidays on the Gower Peninsula, while Cleo Rocos, Melvyn Hayes and Don Warrington climb into the clouds in Snowdonia. The gang then start the Scottish leg of their trip in Edinburgh, where Melvyn’s dad was born, before heading north through the Trossachs. The boys are side-tracked by the intriguingly named Loch Drunkie, while the girls travel by steamboat down Lock Katrine.

A fishing boat in Salcombe goes up in flames with the skipper still aboard, while on the Isle of Sheppey, the lifeboat crew race to the aid of a man stuck in freezing mud in the middle of the night. A dog falls into the river Thames, creating an emergency for the Chiswick crew when the owner dives in to save it – and soon needs rescuing herself.

The celebrities face their first open water experience. James Argent goes on a strict diet in the hope of improving his overall fitness, while Alex Brooker suffers a shoulder injury which could jeopardise his place in the team. The celebrities move on to their first sea swim, a gruelling experience which ends in disaster when an ambulance has to be called out for Tessa Sanderson.
