All-American teenager Marty McFly is accidentally sent back to 1955 by crackpot inventor Doc Brown. But before he can return to the 80s, Marty has to make sure his parents fall for each other. Hugely successful time-travelling sci-fi romp.

A Coastal Adventure with Helen, Jules & JB (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 29th July 2025)

Wings, Waves and Wild Histories. Series 1, episode 3. In south-west Scotland, Helen Skelton heads off-road into the rolling hills of Bainloch Deer Park, home to over six hundred red, sika and fallow deer. Further north, Jules Hudson explores the dark history of HMP Peterhead – Scotland’s own Alcatraz. JB Gill gets hands-on with a reconstruction of the Sutton Hoo ship on the Suffolk coast.

In the aftermath of the Avengers’ climactic battle for the fate of the Universe, teenage webslinger Peter Parker just wants life to get back to normal, all while dodging his day-to-day responsibilities. A school trip across Europe seems just the thing – but he ends up recruited by spy agency SHIELD to battle an invasion by elemental monsters from another dimension alongside new, unknown hero Mysterio. However, the teen from Queens begins to doubt himself. Superhero adventure sequel, starring Tom Holland, Jake Gyllenhaal, Zendaya and Samuel L Jackson.

Emergency in the Channel. Series 10, episode 1. At 4.50am, after responding to a mayday for a small boat crossing in the English Channel, the Dover lifeboat is returning to station with 68 casualties on board. Suddenly they are alerted to a new task – another vessel has capsized, and more than 20 people are now fighting for their lives in the water.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (BBC 1/HD | 10:40pm to 12:55am | Thursday 31st July 2025)

With the web-slinger’s identity now revealed to the world, Peter Parker asks Doctor Strange for magical help to undo the damage. However, a spell gone wrong unleashes dangerous foes from parallel universes on the world. Comic-book adventure sequel, starring Tom Holland, Zendaya and Benedict Cumberbatch, with Willem Dafoe, Jamie Foxx and Alfred Molina among the stars of past Spider-Man movies reprising their roles.

On the North Tyneside coast, Helen Skelton takes the plunge at Tynemouth Long Sands, which is fast becoming the North-East’s surfing hotspot. JB Gill traces the journey of Norfolk-grown mustard from farm to factory on the Norfolk coast.

Featuring interviews with Geldof, Bono, Tony Blair, George W Bush, Olusegun Obasanjo and Richard Curtis, as well as Birhan Woldu, a famine survivor from 1985 who joined Madonna on stage at the concert.

On the Kent coast, JB explores Dungeness – a vast shingle headland and a haven for unlikely wildlife. Jules is in Devon, setting sail from Salcombe aboard the iconic Yawl – the pride of the south coast.

The behind-the-scenes story of the 1985 charity concerts in London and Philadelphia, looking at this historic event and its legacy in Britain, the US, Ethiopia and Africa as a whole. In late October 1984, a BBC news report about a biblical famine in Ethiopia inspired Bob Geldof to collaborate with Midge Ure on a pop song that would mobilise not only Britain but also the United States, raising millions for charity, as Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? single catapulted Geldof into the complex worlds of aid, charity and African politics. Featuring archival footage and specially filmed interviews with Geldof, Ure, Bono and Sting, as well as such key figures such as the Ethiopian ministers responsible for aid, the head of US AID and two survivors of the famine.

The success of the Band Aid single and Bob Geldof’s subsequent trip to Africa spark a joint fundraising event, with concerts in London and Philadelphia, broadcast to more than 80 percent of the world’s TV sets. With millions of pounds raised, Geldof now faced the challenge of deciding how to allocate the funds and embarked on a trip across sub-Saharan Africa. Engaging with governments and aid agencies, he found himself at the heart of a controversy over Ethiopia’s Marxist government’s resettlement policy and how aid was being used. Featuring archival footage from both concerts, including BBC, ABC, and MTV coverage, with performances by U2, Madonna, Phil Collins, and Patti LaBelle, as well as interviews with figures including Sting, Bono, Nile Rodgers, Mike Mitchell, and Birhan Woldu, the Ethiopian girl whose image was immortalised by David Bowie during the concert.

Cromer. Series 8, episode 8. The presenter travels to Cromer on the north Norfolk coast to investigate the Annual Vintage Sixties Festival. After admiring the parade of scooters, Susan joins the crowds with some swinging sixties moves. Aside from sampling local crab, she visits the Pavilion Theatre, a windmill B&B, and at Thursford Steam Museum, she is wowed by the world’s largest collection of steam engines and organs. She also meets comedian Helen Lederer, who recalls family holidays at the seaside wearing a fetching knitted swimsuit.

Harlesden to Stratford. Series 6, episode 8. Robbie returns to where his boating life began, exploring London’s canals on Naughty Lass. He travels through Little Venice and moors in Paddington Basin.

Race Across the World (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 11th June 2025) ** PICK OF THE WEEK **

After racing nearly 13,000km over seven weeks through China, Nepal and India, the teams are about to embark on the final leg. Just 1,200km stand between them and the finish line, with a prize of £20,000 for the winning pair. They must travel through India’s southern states, a region with a distinctly different flavour, with new languages, cuisines and traditions. And with only seven-and-a-half-hours separating the top three pairs, there’s no way of knowing who will be first past the post.

Hidden Treasures of the National Trust (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 13th June 2025)

Goldfinger. Series 3, episode 5. A work of art from the modernist home of architect Erno Goldfinger undergoes conservation work, and hidden messages from an old master are discovered at Upton House. A mysterious letter donated to the collection literary giant Thomas Carlyle’s house reveals how sought after his and his wife’s company really was.

Over a decade after the Lockerbie bombing, the accused finally stand trial in a purpose-built Scottish court in the Netherlands. Bereaved relatives around the world campaign for access to the trial. Scottish police and the FBI continue to work tirelessly to secure vital witness testimony and deliver meticulously collected forensic evidence. Kevin McKidd guest stars in the final episode.

In the weeks following the bombing, the pressure for the investigation to make progress continues to mount. Meanwhile, the joint Scottish-FBI investigation closes in on its first suspect. Could this individual, acting alone or for a larger terrorist organisation, be the Lockerbie bomber?

It’s the halfway point and a 24-hour divide remains between the leaders and those in last place. Ahead is a journey of 1,500km to the fifth checkpoint, McLeod Ganj. Famed for its temples and ashrams, this hill station is not only home to a large Tibetan population but also the 14th Dalai Lama. The teams will need to ascend nearly 7,000ft into the foothills of the Himalayas to reach their destination. But that’s not their only challenge. Pangs of homesickness has the contestants questioning whether their need for comfort overrules their desire to race.

Hidden Treasures of the National Trust (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 23rd May 2025)

In Knole House, the Tudor ancestral seat of the Sackville family, a life-size nude statue of 18th-century ballet dancer Giovana Zanerini is being conserved to slow the aging process and restore her looks. And at the traditional Lake District farmhouse Townend, a key part of the archive of the Browne family of yeoman farmers – a bound volume of 18th-century letters – is being conserved using traditional book-binding skills.

Cameras focus on houses that became retreats, and places of inspiration, for three literary legends. At Hill Top, the Cumbria escape of Beatrix Potter, a collection of over 70 miniature pieces under the roof of the author’s own dolls’ house are undergoing major conservation before a new exhibition. There’s also a look at the woodland cottage of Clouds Hill, Dorset, a refuge for TE Lawrence. There a mysterious painting belonging to the man better known as Lawrence of Arabia reveals its secrets.

In the third leg, the five pairs are challenged to race from the island checkpoint of Sanya to the mysterious Shangri-La, a city sitting on the edge of the Tibetan plateau towards the foothills of the Himalayas. As race leaders Elizabeth and Letitia check out, ex-married couple Yin and Gaz have only just made it in, having been stuck on the mainland unable to cross. With an almighty 44-hour gap between first and last place, Yin and Gaz know they have a mountain to climb to remain in the race, but are determined to come out for leg three fighting.
