UK TV programmes to watch this week : 03/07/2021
Euro 2020 Live: Ukraine v England (BBC 1/HD/UHD | 7:00pm to 10:30pm | Saturday 3rd July 2021) ** COME ON ENGLAND **
Ukraine v England (Kick-off 8.00pm). Coverage of the concluding quarter-final, held at Stadio Olimpico in Rome, as the winners of the seventh and eighth last-16 matches battle it out. Gareth Southgate’s men finally ended their tournament hoodoo against Germany on Tuesday, scoring twice in the last 15 minutes at Wembley to defeat their old enemy in a knockout game for the first time since the 1966 World Cup Final. Raheem Sterling notched his third goal of the tournament to send the crowd into raptures, and captain Harry Kane finished the job with a neat header from Jack Grealish’s cross. Ukraine progressed thanks to a 2-1 victory over Sweden at Hampden Park, with Artem Dovbyk striking in added time in extra time.
Wetherspoons: How Do They Do It?! (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Monday 5th July 2021) ** PICK OF THE WEEK **
A behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of one of the UK’s most popular pub chains, shining a light on the secrets of the brand’s success. The programme explores how Wetherspoons has gained ground on its rivals by being cheaper, quicker or more responsive to customer demands, and reveals some of the tactics used to keep their customers coming back, from cheap deals on food and drink to opening their doors morning, noon and night.
UEFA Euro 2020 Live (ITV/HD | 6:30pm to 10:35pm | Wednesday 7th July 2021) ** SORRY it’s on ITV **
England v Denmark (Kick-off 8.00pm). Mark Pougatch presents coverage of the second semi-final, as the winners of the fourth and third quarter-finals meet at Wembley Stadium. The Three Lions have grown into this tournament, topping Group D thanks to efficient if not spectacular 1-0 wins over Croatia and Czech Republic, and a 0-0 draw with Scotland. They then laid to rest some of their past demons with a 2-0 victory over Germany in the last-16, and thrashed Ukraine 4-0 in Rome in the quarter-finals, becoming the first team in the history of the competition to keep five consecutive clean sheets in their first five games. Denmark have bounced back from the brink of elimination to reach the last four, riding a wave of emotion along the way. Influential midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch and suffered a cardiac arrest during their opening match with Finland, which they would go on to lose 1-0. They were then beaten 2-1 by Belgium in their second group match, but came storming back with a 4-1 victory over Russia to qualify as Group B runners-up. The Danes then hammered Wales 4-0 in the last-16, and overcame Czech Republic 2-1 in the quarter-finals to set up this huge match.
Wonderful Wales with Michael Ball (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 9th July 2021)
The singer and broadcaster explores his own heritage while discovering more about Wales’s rich history. He begins in south Wales. His mother grew up in the Cynon Valley, and his grandfather and great-grandfather were both coal-miners. Michael visits the area that supplied coal to power the Titanic, and on the Gower Peninsula, he learns about cockle harvesting with three generations from Selwyn’s Seafoods.
Drain the Oceans (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 9th July 2021)
By making comparisons with the deepest lake on Earth _ Lake Baikal in the mountainous Russian region of Siberia _ combined with military-grade scanning technology and a sonar curtain drawn across its entire surface, the plug is pulled on the mystery of Scotland’s famous loch. As the waters drain away, more than a monster is revealed.
