UK TV programmes to watch this week : 14/05/2022

The Eurovision Song Contest (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 12:00am | Saturday 14th May 2022) ** PICK OF THE WEEK **

Coverage of the 66th staging of the annual song competition, hosted by Italian TV and radio presenter Alessandro Cattelan and singers Laura Pausini and Mika from PalaOlimpico in Turin, following Italy’s victory in last year’s event with Zitti e buoni by Måneskin. The United Kingdom is represented this year by singer and social media personality Sam Ryder, who will be performing Space Man, which he co-wrote with Grammy-winner Amy Wadge and Max Wolfgang during the pandemic. The current favourite to win are Ukraine’s entry Kalush Orchestra with their song Stefania, who have been granted special permission to leave the country to perform gigs in Tel Aviv and Amsterdam ahead of the main event. Graham Norton will once again commentate and bring his distinctive charm to the spectacular event.

The Airport: Back in the Skies (BBC 1/HD | 8:30pm to 9:00pm | Monday 16th May 2022)

In early November, Heathrow’s most lucrative US routes are opening up to double-vaxxed passengers. Two aircraft prepare for a historic dual take-off. Hayley, a senior airfield officer, is back from furlough and resolving gridlock on the taxiway as two planes come face to face. Footfall is growing but lost revenue from the closure of shops and restaurants poses a serious risk to Heathrow’s survival. Jeremy Spake meets an entrepreneur who is setting up a new restaurant in Terminal 2.

DIY SOS (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 17th May 2022)

The team are in Corby, Northamptonshire, to complete a build for Jackie and Colin Hutchison and their three children. The eldest, Jordan, has cerebral palsy and epilepsy – but this has not stopped him raising huge sums of money for charity. However, he and his family are currently living with his grandmother after a after a series of building issues left them without the money to complete their own home renovation. As ever, Nick Knowles and the team, plus hundreds of local workers, arrive to change this family’s life in just a few short days.

Tim Dunn and Siddy Holloway explore King William Street, the original terminus of the first electric Tube in the world.

The World’s Most Scenic Railway Journeys (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 20th May 2022) ** NEW SERIES **

Return of the travel series narrated by Bill Nighy, beginning with a trip from the Kyle of Lochalsh, a tiny fishing village on the far west coast of Scotland. The jounrney heads east across the Highlands, then turns south through the whisky country of Speyside to Aberdeen, Scotland’s oil capital.

World’s Most Amazing Tractors (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 20th May 2022) ** NEW SERIES **

Getting to grips with the biggest, fastest and most powerful tractors on the planet, including those in Alaska, Florida and the UK. There’s a look in Montana at the biggest tractor ever built, a self-driving tractor with pinpoint precision in Cambridgeshire and a report on the sport of tractor pulling from Florida.

The Airport: Back in the Skies (BBC 1/HD | 8:30pm to 9:00pm | Monday 9th May 2022) ** NEW SERIES **

Jeremy Spake presents a look at daily life at Heathrow during four months of the pandemic, as the airport prepares to resume full operations after 18 months of travel restrictions. Jeremy helps to deep-clean a Boeing 787 900 bound for Delhi, before joining the flight team at the gate to hand out PPE and help calm the nerves of passengers struggling with locator forms.

DIY SOS (BBC 1/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Tuesday 10th May 2022) ** NEW SERIES **

Nick Knowles meets Kettering mum of four Lindsey, who married her ex-Royal Engineer husband Shaun in December 2019, after which they began to extend their Kettering home. But a few months later Shaun was struck down with cancer, and died in November 2021, leaving Lindsey and her children with an unfinished home. But help is on hand as the DIY SOS team, along with hundreds of local trades and several of Shaun’s old army buddies, step in to finish the job.

Will Young: Alcohol and My Brother Rupert (Channel 4/HD | 10:05pm to 11:10pm | Tuesday 10th May 2022)

Will Young lost his brother in July 2020 after a 20-year struggle with alcoholism. In this candid documentary, the singer talks about the pain of coping with a loved one’s addiction and sets out to understand the impact alcoholism can have on families. Among those he meets are a podcaster and campaigner who has battled her own issues with alcohol and an expert who works on the front line of addiction treatment.

Grand Designs: The Street (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:05pm | Wednesday 11th May 2022)

Kevin McCloud follows the progress of Army couple Leah and Craig, whose lives have been dictated by the military. They have designed a contemporary, timber-clad kit house where they can escape from the beige of the barracks. Kevin also meets Jitinder, who works as a consultant helping businesses operate more efficiently – skills he is using in the process of building his own Hollywood Hills-style bachelor pad.

Rob Bell explores the spiritual home of lifesaving – the Longstone lighthouse off the coast of Northumberland, scene of a much discussed rescue attempt by the Victorian lighthouse keeper’s daughter, Grace Darling. Rob sees why the lonely beauty of the Farne Islands is not only a refuge for wildlife, but also a deadly trap for mariners seeking refuge from the tempestuous North Sea.
