A new recruit joins the team in April 1968, and while everyone is keen to make a good impression on the new arrival, she is not afraid to ruffle some feathers. Racial tensions cast a shadow over Poplar following Enoch Powell’s infamous `Rivers of Blood” speech and the effects ripple across the community. A terminally ill patient discharges herself from hospital and wishes to be cared for by her friend.

Cornwall. Series 2, episode 1. Paul Merton and Suki Webster take to the roads again, beginning by heading to Cornwall, home to crystal-clear waters, picturesque fishing villages and beautiful beaches. A group of astronomers gathers on the cliffs of Saint Marie to watch Jupiter and Saturn align – a once-in-a-lifetime planetary event. However, one of its number – renowned professor Bertrand Sworder – meets an untimely death. The circumstances of his demise warrant the involvement of Neville and Naomi, who soon learn there was some professional hostility towards Sworder. Back at the station, Darlene announces that she has passed her exam and is ready to be a trainee officer. Caribbean-set detective drama, starring Ralf Little, Don Warrington and Tahj Miles.

Platinum Party at the Palace (BBC 1/HD | 7:30pm to 10:30pm | Saturday 4th June 2022)

The third day of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations continue with a spectacular evening of entertainment. The Buckingham Palace concert features a glittering array of global stars and performers, including Queen + Adam Lambert, George Ezra, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Nile Rodgers, and Diana Ross, who celebrate 70 years of Her Majesty The Queen’s reign. As darkness falls, the Palace will be illuminated by stunning projections to accompany the show-stopping and emotional songs and performances. Kirsty Young is in St James’s Park in London with special guests, and Roman Kemp is backstage catching up with some of the performers taking part.

Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In (Channel 4/HD | 7:30pm to 9:45pm | Saturday 4th June 2022)

Documentary following the life and career of the legendary football manager, who won an unprecedented 38 trophies during his 26-year tenure in charge of Manchester United. From his working-class roots in Govan, Glasgow to his career as one of the most acclaimed managers of all time, the film takes a look at what makes Sir Alex tick. While recovering from a traumatic brain haemorrhage, Ferguson recounts details of his life and career to his son Jason. Aside from interviews with Alex, his wife Cathy and his three sons, there are contributions from former colleagues and players including Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs and Gordon Strachan.

Whoever persuades the panellists that they are the real homeowner walks away with a cash prize.

British Planes That Won the War with Rob Bell (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 10th June 2022) ** NEW SERIES **

The engineer explores how four iconic British-built aircraft became masters of the sky and pioneered a new era of flight, beginning with the Sopwith Camel. Two years into the First World War, the British fleet was being outgunned and outmanoeuvred by the newer German fighter planes, and the answer came from the Sopwith Aviation Company and a designer called Herbert Smith. This game-changing aircraft shot down more enemy aircraft during the conflict than any other Allied fighter, and became crucial in reclaiming the skies over the Western Front.

At Beachy Head, the Eastbourne crew have to deal with a base jumper’s disastrous takeoff. Just along the Sussex coast in Newhaven, a man faces a race against time as he suffers a seizure on board a tall ship. At Loch Ness, a Second World War sea plane runs into mechanical trouble, and in Rhyl, a dog chasing seagulls into the sea bites off more than she can chew.

Part two of two. Stranded in the flooded care home, Jack and Simone fight to keep the residents alive. Grand Designs (Channel 4/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Wednesday 6th October 2021)

Kevin McCloud meets Cumbrian couple Rob and Ruth, who have bought a 200-year-old former blacking mill and plan to slot in an entirely new, timber-clad structure within its walls, giving the impression that it is peeping out from the original ruins. But the original building is a scheduled monument and Historic England inform them it is too dangerous to repair, giving them no choice but to painstakingly rebuild the ancient mill around their new structure.

All Creatures Great and Small (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Thursday 7th October 2021)

It’s an important day for Tristan in more ways than one, as he celebrates his birthday and Siegfried gives him new responsibilities as a vet. Tristan has to withstand the pressure and succeed in the challenge set by his older brother before returning to Skeldale for his birthday festivities. Meanwhile, Mrs Hall reminds James that he needs to tell Helen some home truths.

The Cotswolds with Pam Ayres (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 8th October 2021)

The poet visits the Oxfordshire town of Burford for a look round Cotswold Wildlife Park, a place she’s been visiting for decades. Pam feeds some of the endangered lemurs, before locking horns with one of its mightiest residents – a rhino named Mods. The series ends with a trip to Cirencester Polo Park, home to England’s oldest polo club.

Susan Calman’s Grand Day Out (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 8th October 2021) ** NEW SERIES & PICK OF THE WEEK **

The comedian’s second run of excursions begins on the Norfolk Broads, where she is invited aboard a beautifully restored boat known as a wherry. But the plot they have bought, near a beautiful estuary in West Sussex, is dominated by a swampy pond that they are unable to fill in. Instead, they plan to make it central to their design, turning the pond into a diodiverse waterscape, and then floating their house above it. It’s a challenge for anyone – but to save money, Dan is doing it largely himself, despite his limited experience with new builds.

Donna’s keen to push Leanna and Jamie out of their comfort zone and has enlisted her sister Sarah to help. However, with flamboyant designers Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Russell Whitehead and Jordan Cluroe in charge, anything could happen.

His South Devon trek ends near the mouth of the River Dart, but not before he leaves his own mark on this beautiful stretch of coast, a new wooden signpost for walks inscribed with his initials.

However, as site clearance begins, so does the Covid-19 pandemic – and family harmony is tested when an apple tree much loved by Fernando is condemned for removal by Gretta.

A 13-year-old stuck on a bus after dislocating their knee kicks off another busy night shift for Emily and Lois. A discussion between Adam and the patient reveals their anxiety about what lies ahead for them – a feeling shared right across the service whether on the road or in dispatch. Rob Bell uncovers the incredible stories behind Scotland’s mighty Bell Rock lighthouse, an engineering marvel built on a deadly submerged reef in the treacherous North Sea. Eleven miles offshore, this light has stood strong for over 200 years, but at the start of the 19th century, the reef was a menace causing innumerable wrecks and drowning countless mariners. As the show reveals, Robert Stevenson, a young, ambitious engineer, was determined to prove that something could be done to stop Bell Rock claiming so many lives.

The Frenchman claimed he was provoked by a racist slur, but his actions caused national outrage and the threat of a prison term loomed.

Part one of two. Life on board nuclear submarine HMS Trenchant on its four-month tour of duty to the mid-Atlantic, uncovering the reality of life at sea. Their mission is to travel to the mid-Atlantic to protect a British submarine that’s carrying Trident nuclear missiles.

The crew at Tower, on the River Thames in London, is the busiest of all the lifeboat stations, averaging more than 500 shouts a year and aiming to launch to any emergency in under 90 seconds. When a call comes in about a man in the water near the Thames Barrier, they reach him with just moments to spare. In Fleetwood, on the Lancashire coast, a desperate 999 call alerts the crew to a bait digger – out looking for worms on the sand flats – who has been caught out by the incoming spring tide and is in danger of being submerged and swept out to sea.

After a surprising breakthrough in Jay’s case, Nikki struggles to accept that Scott may not be responsible. What at first appears to be a house fire, Jack confirms was an arson attack, and Nikki discovers that the victim was murdered before the fire was set. The team struggles to find a connection to Jay’s case, but when crucial evidence is retrieved from the scene, attention returns to the prison.

Not only that, but half of the plot can’t even be built on due an underground mains sewer. All they’re left with is a very small triangle on which to build their future life together. With £190,000 in the bank, Olaf and Fritha must use all the ingenuity they can muster to make their triangular three-bedroom house come to life.

North West Ambulance Service calls up military personnel to help care for the public effectively as the pandemic takes its toll. The new recruits are put through three days of intensive training before they can join the paramedics working on the frontline. Once training is complete they should be able to respond to lower category calls, which account for 20 per cent of the workload. Meanwhile, in control call handers are currently answering a new 999 call every 20 seconds. With staff sickness taking its toll on the workforce, agency staff are drafted in to help. Narrated by Christopher Eccleston.

Paul and Suki visit Norfolk for the final leg of their UK tour. Their first stop-off is Great Yarmouth’s quieter neighbour, Gorleston-on-Sea. The celebratory launch of a new luxury resort is cut short when a woman is found electrocuted in her hotel bathtub – with the door locked from the inside. It looks like a simple case of suicide, but with Jack Mooney no longer around to confirm Commissioner Selwyn’s suspicions, DI Neville Parker is temporarily flown over from Manchester to close the case. However, he soon realises that island life is not for him, so when evidence of suspicious activity turns up, he is dismayed to realise he will have to extend his stay and investigate the case as murder. Ralf Little joins the cast, with guest appearances by Steve Pemberton and Samantha Bond.

Comedian Susan Calman continues her journey in Ayrshire, where she visits the birthplace of Robert Burns and gets to see a precious artefact normally kept in a fireproof safe. Moving on to the Isle of Arran, she learns the tricks of foraging and puts her sense of smell to the test, before heading to Culzean Castle and learning the story behind Peter Pan in Dumfries. The tour concludes by travelling in a kayak to Pladda Lighthouse.
