UK TV programmes to watch this week : 29/01/2022

Trixie is assigned to help a crane driver who has been rendered paraplegic following a workplace accident, but whose determined wife refuses all offers of assistance. On boggy moorland overlooking the Moray Firth near Inverness, Michael explores the battlefield at Culloden, where Bonnie Prince Charlie’s Jacobite army fought British Government troops in 1746.

Michael Portillo travels by train north from Inverness to the Orkney Islands. Beginning on the Moray Firth, Michael admires the Cullen Viaduct then enjoys a bowl of Cullen skink at a family-run fishmonger of 150 years’ standing. In the factory smokery, he learns from the owner how the famous soup acquires its distinctive taste.

Michael Portillo’s Scottish coastal railway journey reaches Invergordon on the Cromarty Firth, the third great inlet on the northeast coast of the Highlands. On the Firth’s southern bank, Michael stops in the port of Leith to tour the Royal Yacht Britannia, before crossing the River Forth at Stirling and heading east to Alloa on the northern bank.

Travelling across country to the River Tay, Michael discovers the city of Perth, before heading to the banks of the Tay for a magical sunset canoe trip to spot beavers.

Leaving Ayr, her path follows the shoreline south, skirting wild beaches.

Return of the documentary following the ups and downs of everyday life for a Royal Navy crew, this time going aboard frigate HMS Northumberland on a four-month tour of duty with the 220 personnel. Captain Thom Hobbs prepares his ship to set sail, with deputy logistics officer Meghan Burgoyne overseeing the loading of the copious amounts of food required for the time at sea, and young chef Sauhil James prepares for his very first deployment.

Elton John enters an addiction rehabilitation session, and recounts his life in a flashback, covering his days as young Reginald Dwight growing up in 1950s Britain. Nick Knowles and the team head to Barnstaple in Devon to help Jan and Lucy, whose daily four-hour round trips to hospital for life-saving dialysis treatment for two of their daughters is taking a heavy toll on family life. Along with designer Laurence Llewelyn Bowen and hundreds of local volunteers, Nick and the crew extend their house to create a home dialysis centre, enabling the girls to be treated where they live and letting the whole family settle into a healthier and happier routine.

The naturalist enjoys an 11-mile walk in Exmoor along the South West Coast Path, regarded as one of the most beautiful such paths in the world. Starting at Porlock Weir, Kate heads to St Bueno’s, a tiny parish church that seats just 33 worshippers – and which holds a dark past. She then heads inland to see the valley that inspired RD Blackmore’s 1869 novel of outlaws and revenge, Lorna Doone. At Lynmouth, Kate rides the world’s highest and steepest water-powered railway, before finishing her walk seemingly on top of the world in the Valley of Rocks.

November 1991 finds the situation darkening. Jill and Roscoe work extra hours, while Ritchie clings to past success and even Carol finds a kinder side. The actor continues his journey around the rugged Irish coast. Adrian learns about the history of Malin Head, the northernmost tip of mainland Ireland, from where Marconi sent the first ever commercial message to a ship by wireless in 1902. He also meets motorcycle champion Michael Dunlop, who has won the Isle of Man TT 19 times, before visits to the remote fishing village Carrick-a-rede and the Giant’s Causeway. He ends his journey in the Mourne Mountains in Rostrevor, which are said to have inspired Belfast-born CS Lewis to create the magical land of Narnia.

A stag do ends in tragedy when the host of a celebratory fishing trip is found harpooned on a beach the following morning. Stonehenge: The Lost Circle Revealed (BBC 2/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 12th February 2021)

Using cutting-edge research, a dedicated team of archaeologists has compiled the evidence to fill in a 400-year gap in man’s knowledge of the bluestones of Stonehenge. By combining innovative 3D scanning techniques, traditional field archaeology and novel laboratory analysis, the team has discovered where the stones were quarried and where they first stood. Professor Alice Roberts shows how the team made its discoveries and joins Professor Mike Parker Pearson to piece together the final parts of the puzzle, solving one of the toughest challenges ever faced by archaeologists.

She visits the spectacular Falls of Dochart, where she gets special access to the stunningly beautiful island of Inchbuie. She also views a bizarre Iron Age-style dwelling, known as a crannog, erected on stilts in Loch Tay.

Kevin McCloud follows an ambitious build in Cornwall, as Leigh and Richard transform a derelict 17th century flour mill into a contemporary, three-bedroom home. They employ traditional craftsmen to start work on restoring the exterior, but it’s not long before the true scale of the damage to the structure is revealed, and as the costs rise, they are forced to take more of the work themselves.

Adrian Dunbar’s Coastal Ireland (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Thursday 4th February 2021)

Actor Adrian Dunbar reconnects with his roots as he travels around the wild and rugged Irish coast. In the first of two programmes he visits the astonishing Mizen bridge, suspended 45 metres above sea level, and heads to Co Cork, where old friend Darina Allen makes him lunch at Ballymaloe House. He also fulfils a lifelong ambition to make the treacherous sea crossing to Skellig Islands, where the ruins of an ancient monastic settlement are perched 600 feet above sea.

When renowned concert pianist Pasha Verdinikov is shot dead during an apparent burglary, Neville is quick to conclude that the scene was staged and Pasha was murdered. But the four people under suspicion – the victim’s family and domestic workers – all have seemingly solid alibis. However, matters are complicated when the discovery of new evidence links the crime to a case from 20 years ago. First of a two-part story, starring Ralf Little and Josephine Jobert.

Her first visit is to the Teifi River where she’s invited to paddle an unusually small boat called a coracle, then it’s on to the Blue Lagoon for a spot of cliff jumping. Next, Susan samples Welsh seaweed delicacy laverbread at Broadhaven Beach, before visiting the home of the celebrated Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.

However, this pioneering construction seems an exercise in trial and error from the start, and what began as a seemingly simple, pure concept becomes a complicated feat of engineering.
