Great Rail Restorations with Peter Snow (Channel 4 | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Wednesday 27th June 2018)

In this episode, a family restores one of only two surviving coaches used by Queen Victoria. The carriage has been rotting in a car park for decades. But now owner Stephen Middleton is putting his heart and soul into a restoration fit for a queen. Helped by his wife Ying, and teenage daughter Honey, Stephen uncovers a hidden gold step and an early gas light in the roof. Peter keeps a particular beady eye on the work, telling Stephen, ‘Queen Victoria will be turning in her grave if you don’t get this right.’ And Henry Cole investigates how engineers met Queen Victoria’s demands for a smooth ride.

Building Britain’s Canals (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 29th June 2018)

Documentary series in which historian Dan Jones uncovers the stories behind three of Britain’s canals. Dan examines the creation of arguably the prettiest of the country’s waterways, the Kennet and Avon Canal. It came into being thanks to the genius of a young engineer named John Rennie, whose inspiration and innovations created a canal that linked Bristol and London.

The Yorkshire Dales and the Lakes (more4 | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Tuesday 19th June 2018)

The show that looks at life in the national parks of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales returns for a new series. In the Lakes, champion sheep breeder Arnold Lancaster prepares his flock for the famous Westmorland County Show. In the Dales, the church bells at St Bartholomew’s remain silent after their belfry has fallen into disrepair. Locals arrange a fund raiser to get the bells ringing again. And dog trainer John Halstad prepares his dog Wren for a Dales trial.

Luxury and glamour are at the heart of this episode, as the series jumps forward 100 years to 1960. The restoration project this time is a rusting and tired Pullman dining car, one of the very last batch to be made in Britain. The dedicated restoration team at Tyseley Engineering Works in Birmingham must transform both the dining car while getting the wreck of a kitchen back to working order. There’s heavy engineering to do, as well as meticulous attention to detail needed. Peter’s third driving lesson sees him grappling with reading signals, while still keeping the fire burning and the steam at the correct pressure. Henry Cole delves into the history of catering on the railways.

Writer and historian Dan Jones uncovers the unique stories behind three of Britain’s most iconic canals. Experimental for the time, this canal rises 500ft above sea level, scales the steep Pennines and turned Liverpool into the busiest port in the world.
