On his way to the Isle of Mull, Michael watches eagerly for sea mammals in a stretch of water where many species of whales, dolphins and porpoises have been recorded, before checking out the daily catch in the fishing port of Tobermory. Later, Michael heads to the tiny Isle of Staffa, where he follows in the wake of a young Felix Mendelssohn, who was only 20-year-old when he set eyes on the volcanic sea cavern, Fingal’s Cave.

Michael Portillo’s railway adventure reaches the west coast of Scotland where, aboard the Jacobite Express, he crosses the awe-inspiring Glenfinnan Viaduct. With his view of the curve of 21 arches built entirely of concrete, Michael and his fellow passengers are the envy of the crowds waving below. Spectacular engineering is in store for Michael in the Grampian mountains at Fort William, where he investigates the Lochaber Aluminium Works.

The presenter enjoys scenic views from the stunning shores of Loch Lochy. Susan spies some activity ahead – which turns out to be a spot of axe throwing, and local chap Woodman Tom is happy to give her a go. Susan’s last stop is in Glen Coe, where she takes learns to paddle-board.

Death in Paradise (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 18th February 2022)

A reggae rap artist is shot dead at a soundcheck for a concert. Things prove uncomfortable for Marlon when he discovers a personal connection to the crime. Caribbean-set detective drama, starring Ralf Little, Don Warrington and Tahj Miles.
