UK TV programmes to watch this week : 04/04/2020

Race Across the World - 05-04-2020 - YouView appRace Across the World (BBC 2/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Sunday 5th April 2020)

The teams have reached the halfway point of their journey. For the next leg, must choose whether to travel through Bolivia or Chile – both countries with unstable political climates. Sam and Jo decide to break up their travel with regular breaks, while Jen and Rob have an explosive argument when they get caught up in Bolivia’s general election. Emon and Jamiul find work in an Argentinian salt mine, and Dom has a health scare that may require him to pull out of the race.

One Night in the Museum (BBC Scotland/HD & BBC iPlayer only | 8:00pm to 8:45pm | Wednesday 8th April 2020)

With no adults around to supervise them, three groups of children from different primary schools visit the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester at night.

Walking Britain’s Lost Railways (Channel 5/HD | 8:00pm to 9:00pm | Friday 10th April 2020)

Until it closed in 1966 the Deeside Railway followed the River Dee upstream from Aberdeen into what is now the Cairngorms National Park. As luck would have it, Queen Victoria purchased Balmora just as the line was set to open, giving the route prestige. Rob Bell retraces the route, visiting a shooting estate, tossing a caber and finding an unmistakable Highland `brand” that all owe their existence to this royal railway age. He also explores a quiet valley of cattle farming and timber sawmills, and, in truth, a simple railway that struggled for decades to justify its own existence, despite its royal veneer.

Around the World by Train with Tony Robinson (Channel 5/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Friday 10th April 2020)

The actor rides the El Chepe train from the west coast of Mexico through to the Copper Canyon – a system larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon. From there, Tony jumps on Mexico’s only passenger line to head towards the USA. Along the way, he stops in the city of Chihuahua where he discovers Sotol, the region’s answer to Tequila. He then heads to Juarez, a city once strongly associated with drug cartels. After crossing the US border into El Paso, Tony meets a fellow train enthusiast trying to revive historic street cars. The final stop on this leg of his journey is Los Angeles’ Union Station.
