Using a wealth of preserved recordings and previously unseen documents, Jonathan Dimbleby uncovers the story of how the BBC went into battle against Hitler and Whitehall’s ministers, and its part in the social revolution the war provoked. In this programme, Jonathan looks at how the BBC prepared to report from the front line during World War II.

BBC reporter Tom Martienssen was halfway up Mount Everest when an earthquake made the mountain shake. Tom and a team of British Army Gurkhas were trapped after a wall of rock and ice came crashing down around them. Their footage tells the story of an extraordinary rescue and of the people who lost their lives on Everest. After a second devastating quake, Tom returns to Nepal to find the men who were with him on the mountain and to discover how the country is coping amid continuing aftershocks.

The Met: Policing London (BBC 1/HD | 9:00pm to 10:00pm | Monday 22nd June 2015)

Documentary following the officers of Britain’s biggest and busiest police service as they deal with life, death, crime and its victims, all across the capital. Detectives Stuart McNaughton and Bob Dolce work for Trident, the Met’s specialist gang unit. As increasingly younger boys and girls are being lured into the gang lifestyle, Bob and Stuart have focused on London’s most dangerous gang. Wealthy residents of Camden, north London, have been plagued by a wave of violent snatch-and-grab thefts by robbers using mopeds to evade police. Public confidence in the police is running low, and it’s up to borough commander Richard Tucker to win back trust and wipe out the problem. Police constables Tim Dawes and Steph Mills have been patrolling the streets of Brixton for over five years and deal with knife crime on an almost daily basis. But nothing can prepare them for the shock of a vicious knife attack in broad daylight. It’s up to them to try to save the life of an innocent teenage boy.

Following three election specials earlier this year, the award-winning show returns for a sixth series of unique irreverent satire. Adam Hills and co-hosts Josh Widdicombe and Alex Brooker tear into the week’s main talking points. They are joined by a live studio audience and weekly celebrity guest. This time it’s actor, writer and director Stephen Merchant.
